View Full Version : Is iBurst viable for Xbox 360 gaming?

I seem to have moved to an internet desert island (read Centurion West) and neither Telkom nor Neotel are anywhere in sight. I've been looking at maybe getting iBurst as a possible wireless solution until some provider can give me ADSL but in researching I seem to find mixed reviews about gaming using iBurst, especially on the Xbox 360.

I know Azi uses iBurst in CT but is anyone happy in PTA?

Also, I'm seeing mixed reviews about the tech admin and getting optimizations, is there a consensus here?

iBurst is a wireless technology, right? Then I would say its not going to be a great experience gaming on that, because the latencies are going to annoy you to no end. Its excellent for general browsing, but I doubt your international or local pings are going to be very low.

Ask Azi, see what she says, and send a pm about it to Ch@ps as well, he has more friends with experience with these things. Btw, have you given Telkom a ring and asked them about installing the cable at your place? I'm sure they have some techies there who can do it.

Iburst heavily depends in your bec and how far away from the tower you are.

I doubt you'll be happy with the performance.

Why not ask Telkom about wimax?

People really need to stop speculating about iBurst - seriously.

It's like this - if your signal is 90% or higher - you can game quite happily on local servers at pings from 40-80ms; Xbox (XBL tends to actually be a bit more competent when it deals with latency), PC, whatever. Anything less than 90% and you'll see your pings increase dramatically past 80ms into the realm of unplayable. Get them out to do a signal test, wiggle the aerial about until you've found the ideal spot, and take it from there.

When I was still with iBurst, you could speak to the admins to get your account optimised. I'm not sure how it works these days but I see no reason why you couldn't organise it if you spoke to the right people.

Sometimes I get the feeling people just repeat the old "wireless tronz = unplayable latencies" because that's what they've heard, not experienced. I usually game on local latencies between 70-110ms, and even on the upper scale, it's perfectly manageable.

I regularly play Xbox games over LIVE with my sister in the UK, and I've yet to have a problem. If I can pop a headshot in CoD4 on a person almost 10 000km away, then the latency is probably just fine.

I do, however, have a signal of 98%-100%.

I used to have iburst. Pings could be anywhere from 60 to 500 depending on how it felt and time day.

iburst is very unreliable when it comes to pings but it can be caoxed & improve, email them and ask them to unblock/priorities the xbox ports(on a pc I would also suggest changing the standard MTU)

I've just spoken to iBurst and, although I checked it on the map myself, the operator confirmed I have a Good rating on the coverage map; but when I asked if the Good rating was good enough for gaming he told me I needed to get ADSL :( Maybe you need Best or Great for gaming, or the iBurst staff don't know their product that well when it comes to gaming?

My signal was always between 85%-95% and just like Chevron said, it depends on how it feels, my average ping was 60-80 but every week or so it decided to jump to 120-300 and would stay that way for a week or two no matter what I did. Their support is borderline non-existent and prices are even worse.

Try telkom again even though they suck they are probably a better option. That said one of my friends get better pings playing on international (relative to 384 adsl) than local.

At latest post, best to get a modem and check the line for yourself the coverage map said I have poor signal but when I tested it myself it was full so.

or the iBurst staff don't know their product that well when it comes to gaming?Iburst don't even install or maintain (most of) there own hardware and networks, its outsourced, which is why they have "not-so-clued-up" people in the call centers....
