Johannesburg - The ANC Youth League on Tuesday called for the immediate withdrawal of the "disgusting" Nando's television and radio advertisements.

The league said the advertisements used "cheap satire" to undermine electoral politics in South Africa.

"We are fully aware that the advertisement is intended at mocking the president of the ANCYL, and in a racist fashion portrays political leaders as cartoons."

The television adverts feature a puppet named Julius - which could be a reference to ANCYL leader Julius Malema - who demands "change".

The league said it has commissioned its lawyers to investigate.

Legal advice

"While awaiting the legal advice, the ANCYL instructs the Nando's Company and those who did the advertisement to promptly withdraw the advert from all television screens and radio channels.

"If Nando's does not withdraw the adverts, the ANCYL will mobilise the people of South Africa to take militant action against Nando's and anything associated with Nando's."

Nando's marketing manager Sylvester Chauke said Nando's went with the political theme because "it is what is happening in the country at the moment".

"Our advertisements are not a stab at Julius Malema at all. What is it that Nando's said in the advert that is negative about him?... If only I could have an answer to that."

****ing A julius, prove to us how "democratic" you are...

Please Nandos if you happen to read this don't take off the ad. :P

Lulz. Nando's always had some great ads, and that's no exception. I think Malema needs to develop a sense of humour.

Just watched it this morning. :P

lol.

Malema want's to take military action against a fricking food chain!? That's just retarded. I dislike this guy so much... He is a hate monger, a violence encourager and a colossal idiot. To top it off, he has no sense of humour - something this country really needs right now.

But, in another sense, he has driven many from supporting the ANC. This is a good thing, and for that I am grateful.

And Nandos get exactly what they wanted. These guys don't realise that by drawing attention to the add, they've made thousands of people aware of it who might never have seen it (me being one). Nandos get's a ton of free advertising, and Malema continues to look like the fool he is.

Well, I don't see that as a naive statement. It isn't too much to assume that there are people who used to support the ANC but changed their mind upon seeing the stupidity of Malema. I think that the ANC has never looked as stupid as it does today, with much thanks going to Malema, and because of that many of it's more educated and level-headed members have left for other parties (look at COPE, for instance).

I wonder how they are going to explain the 1000 ballot papers that were found at the side of the road in White River...and people say the elections not rigged. We dont need Scooby Doo to figure out who the bad guy is in this case.

We should hear the results of a probe into that incident today. (http://www.news24.com/News24/Elections/News/0,,2-2478-2479_2504669,00.html) I found it suspicious that the IEC couldn't come out with a direct statement as to where the ballot papers came from, surely they could have tracked down the truck headed for White River, contacted the driver, and figured it out quickly. Anyway, we should know what transpired by the end of today.

Yeah, they most probably will. Although, these could be very interesting elections and there could be unexpected results. Are you sure you want to take that chance - with your entire gaming collection!? ;)

Well, at the ANC's final major campaign meeting (on Sunday), Zuma gave guarantees that the ANC government would not tamper with the judiciary or the constitution. So that should help ease some people's fears about a two thirds majority win for them.

I mean, there's a slim chance they're referring to Julius Molema, and even that chance is too big! While I'm sure the ANC are gonna win, there's a good chance they wont get the 2/3 majority. They actually had to put up a fight in the Eastern Cape this year, the province is normally a landslide victory for them. Also, all indications are that the DA will take the western cape. You may be suprised when the results come out.

Also heard an interesting thin on east coast radio last friday. they were doing a radio show about the popularity of the political parties and during the show more than 80% came back and said no to the ANC. Sounds like the KZN might be in for some tough times

Oh come on! We all know Malema a is blithering idiot, albeit a dangerous one, but an idiot none the less. If he honestly thinks anyone will take him seriously then he is more deluded than we give him credit for. Every time is the same, he makes a comment, everyone gets ****ed and then his masters make him give a public apology and at the end of the day he looks like more of a fool than he did in the beginning, at least to those of us who have at least half a brain cell anyway. The ad was pretty funny though and I don't think he has a foot to stand on, in fact just because of this, I'm having Nandos tonight. Also check out the Evita Bezuidenhout spot as well, also pretty funny.

I'll write some of it down for you, spid3r.
Basically, Julius is saying that it is time for change, no demand change, and they will get that change from Nandos. I cannot remember the exact amount but he says:
"You can buy a peri peri chicken and a coke for R37.50 and pay with a R40, getting R2.50 change. But, if you pay with a R100 note, you will get R62.20 change. So you get more money back than you paid for the meal."

Hehe, it really is funny. I can't see where the racism comes in? The cartoon guy is probably black, but does that automatically make the advert's producer racist? Wasn't it the ANC that said we should have more black individuals in the adverts?

I'm not seeing it either and I'm often overly sensitive to racism. I'm gonna guess it is "Racist" because the news guy was white...

But man this just makes me laugh. Who thinks it's a bit of a rip-off of Zapiro's Z-News?

@wisp: They found no foul play (http://www.news24.com/News24/Elections/News/0,,2-2478-2479_2505034,00.html) with those scattered ballet papers, they just fell off the back of a truck. Even so, it seems they have taken special security measures to ensure that no "rigged" ballots get counted - so even if they were fakes they wouldn't be of any use.

Julius Malema is an interesting person. The ANC Youth League of old was led by promising, intelligent individuals who would later go on to lead the ANC, and, in Mandela's case, South Africa.
Back then, the Youth League was in an actual struggle, unlike now. Malema is a rebel without a cause, and, judging by his ludicrous public comments, suffers from one or more mental retardations.

Education is something that is desired in a leader, yet Malema has not completed matric.
His infamous quote "...we will lay down our lives and kill for Zuma..." has received tons of flak, yet he tried to get out of the obvious issues surrounding the quote by saying that he was speaking metaphorically and trying to indicate the passion and love with which they stand behind Zuma.

Now, since most of the Youth League members probably do not have matric, and keeping in mind that the ANCYL is a militant organisation, I doubt they share comrade Julius's thinking.

And here in lies the problem. To me at least, Malema seems to be wanting this unrest, this "cause". As for the mental retardations, I think it's mostly attention seeking. I read in this mornings Cape Times that he apparently now has no problem with the ad in question, as long as they are willing to pay him for it.

I'm really disappointed they backed down, it's the principal of the thing. The ANCYL had no grounds for their allegations and it's like Nando's is admitting that either A) Their advert is in fact 'racist' and 'disgusting' - which it certainly isn't; or B) The ANCYL is a force to be reckoned with and we should all buckle to their demands. When is someone going to hold ANCYL accountable? I don't take threats of 'militant action' lightly.
