(I haven't been on in a while, so if this has already been discussed excuse me coz I couldn't find it on the forum)
Anyhoo, I found this opinion quite interesting. I was also an "original" gamer but I'm far more casual these days and I enjoy finding new people to play with. But I do understand the frustration, it happens in any hobby/interest that once had a small population then suddenly was jumped upon by people looking to market it and make money...

A very passionate speech delivered by the pink cat in a business suit, but the fact of the matter is that its right. I must say that I'm not one of the "original" gamers but I have had my own experiences in this matter. I still remember one of Miktar's columns in which he expresses the same feelings as the feline above.

You can earn the title of "hardcore" gamer by choosing one of the folowing:
1. Dota
2. Wow
3. COD
4. Solitaire
I have the exact same feelings as the pink cat and everything Miktar said in his column way back was so close to hart.
I see the same thing happening with bikers these days and it infuriates me. Also, the same thing happened to tattoos.

"We didn't spend YEARS as a social outcast to watch you *******s **** this up!"
This line speaks to me 0_0
I beat the robotmasters, but I'm afriad I didn't ever save the Princess (saved some toadstools though).

My cousin and I spent ages saving the princess when we were younger. The dungeon/lava level was awesome....

I think the major problem here is that people have defined themselves so long as those "social outcasts" and "gamers" that having the definition of one of these changed affects how they describe themselves. Because, if you cannot define yourself as you've always defined yourself, who are you? What are you? What is your role? Where do you fit?
Naturally, it would be better to just not define yourself socially. You're a unique individual. That's really the only thing that matters.

My family had a sega...master system until my brother got a ps1(which i wasn't allowed to play :( ) then i got my own, ever since then (and you know this panicore) people have been giving me crap ever since. Now some of those same people play a little cod4 and think they're hardcore until i pwn them. Um...what's my point...oh yes, it was all that hating that gave me the motivation to be a better gamer and i'm sure it's the same for some of you. Damn...i had another point...i forgot so i'll end by saying gamers are awesome

I wasn't planning on commenting on this thread, as I can no longer call myself hardcore. Though I never did, I think mainstream will be the lifeblood of the hardcore blockbuster.
Whats wrong with selling lemonade to raise money to sell tequila?

Ugh... Is it cool to be a "Hardcore Gamer" again?
I liked it more when people frowned upon others who called themselves "Hardcore Gamers"
Push comes to shove, games are there to have fun, that's the reason people take the time and effort to make games. Games shouldn't be a tool to be used by the self proclaimed "hardcore gamer" to inflate their ego's.
So what if more people are playing Wii Sports or whatever else? It can only be a healthy thing for the gaming industry.
Remember, everyone started somewhere, besides, Wii is fun, no matter how "n00b" or "Softcore" it is.

But to be a real gamer you dont need to be hardcore you just have to have your roots in gaming ( me and my now deceased TV Games *sob*) or see it as a real hobby instead of something you do when you got something better to do, But you know I know where this cartoon comes from many people were scorned for enjoying games and now the same people who scorned them are now playing games which kinda sucks.

But to be a real gamer you dont need to be hardcore you just have to have your roots in gaming ( me and my now deceased TV Games *sob*) or see it as a real hobby instead of something you do when you got something better to do, but the old school gamers (like me ) are the purest of the pure and the ones who had to go through the scorn in the old days of being a gamer so yay for us!!!!
So, according to your equation of sorts, in order to be a true guitarist, you have to have your roots in playing the guitar? Nope, sorry, doesn't compute. Reason being: It doesn't matter how long you've been playing the guitar, the point is that you are a person who plays it, and therefore, a guitarist.
Same goes for gaming. So what if someone just started playing games yesterday, and they see it as a medium for fun (what games were meant for) instead of seeing it as a serious hobby? The fact that they play games regularly, or even seldom, is what makes them a gamer. Not how long they've been playing games or what type of games they play.
P.S. I can assure you that you are not the "purest of pure", seeing as there is no such thing.

AH but notice I say you have to have your Roots in gaming OR Just see it as a hobby rather than a awy to pass some time when you have nothing better ro do by the way did you notice the "or". you dont need both the requirements just one.
Oh and when you say purest of the pure it makes me sound Like an Aryan Nazi zombie so I apologize for that.

We as South Africans should know that majority rules... There's big money in casual gaming at the moment and they will milk it as long as possible.
The point is I know many people who spent money on their Wii consoles and none of them still use it. The worst part being that they will never try out any of the titles I've recently seen that are actually worth more than the cases they're in - House of the Dead/Mad World/Conduit... Instead they threw their money at a bunch of these party and mini games (of which many are indie and flash games that I've played for free before) that have about 10 min play value and maybe another 20 min when showing it to guests and then never see light again.
So imo they are of no use to the industry unless you condone developers continuing to cater for these 'gamers' that have no intent of actually pushing them to create better titles but instead encourage mediocre and shallow games.

Yes, games are sooo mediocre and shallow nowadays. :/
Another thing, "hard core" gamers don't post on forums, they are too busy playing games. With the exception of Azimuth naturally. I have this theory that her soul left her body and possessed the internet, she still haunts this site you know.
My thoughts on this topic: "hard core" is just some term people use when they want to be exclusive. That is why, when a person claims to be hard core, they allways get so much flak. They are busy blowing their own trumpets. The "Hard Core" gamer doesn't exist, there are people that like games more than others, or a certain type of game more than others. There are also people that perform better than others in games. But the definition of "the hard core gamer" is an elusive one. The term "hard core" is a flaky one.

Yes, actually. They are. Sure you get the odd case of clarity and brilliance, usually in the form of some indie puzzle game or something or other - but half of the AAA titles today are either sequels to classics, watered down to appeal to the lowest common denominator, or SPECTACULAR AK-SHIN IN YOUR FACE HDR EXPLOSIVENESS. The hype, dear God, the hype.

If I recall correctly, that particular column was written tongue in cheek.

A gamer is a gamer to me. On the other hand, a Hardcore Gamer eats, sleeps, and sh*ts games. They spend hours on end in front of the TV or monitor and clock the game in record time. They don't flinch when they have to dish out nearly R1000 for a game they really want. They have played almost every genre out there, although they have their favourites. They continuously look for ways to up their game. They can name all the major game publishers. When they hear about an up and coming game they really want, they take every opportunity to find out more info about it. They get excited when new trailers and screenshots are released. THEY READ NAG! And most importantly they are proud to say: "I'M PROUD OF MY ADDICTION"!

It just annoys me so much to see that the people who used to "look down apon" gaming now seem to accept it much more easily. Way too hypocritical for my blood. This is a story one of my school teachers told the class a few years back:
There was this big, jock "toughman" sort of guy who used to mess up and insult all the "nerds" and "geeks" he could find. That teacher I told you about used to work part-time at an internet cafe. Every now and then, this toughman would walk in and start causing problems, so much so, that my teacher quit his job and moved on to other things. A few months later, this teacher walked into the internet cafe, just to find the "toughman" was a part time employee himself! Times are changing.
Also what annoys me, is people who are gamers, yet try to fake it and hide it, just to be cool™. What the hell is cool™ anyway!

It's like you all expect people to stay the same. You've stereotyped others into Jocks and whatnot and yourself as a Gamer. These are just stereotypes, and serve no purpose other than to reduce cognitive effort. And then you're complaining when people don't fit their stereotypes perfectly or the stereotypes are revised as if people should just stay damn well put into the categories you defined for them.
So you had a sucky childhood because you didn't develop the social skills as others did. So there were some people who were mean to you because of this. Grow some balls. Seriously. And stop assuming that gaming is somehow sacred and being a part of this "cultural group" somehow makes up for your sucky childhood.
