since i moved too capetown from durban i have not yet attended a rAge and was wondering how people in the Western Cape will get too rAge this year, before i use too drive with friends and one time i flew down too jhb when i was living in durban, so is it easier too drive or fly from Cape Town, also considering fuel costs etc ? because i know alot of gamers in the past that where from Cape Town attended but dont know how they got there. any inlightenment on this matter would be a great help as myself and three friends are thinking of making the trip too rAge this year but travel is a problem atm.

yeah i saw that a return flight from cpt would be around R1600 or so but then its getting too and from the airport which would be the problem so think driving up would be the best way for me

Get a couple of your buddies to drive with, that way you can split the cost between 3 or 4 people

Flights with 1time from JHB - CT and back are R409 one way including all tax. Then just rent out a car here/get a buddy to help you out. 3 or 4 guys in a car will all their pc's driving up from Cape town will be:
a) Uncomfortable to say the least.
b) Expensive. Take into account toll gates, petrol, food etc.
Trust me, if you can organise transport up here, flying on 1 time is the way to go(well, depending on whether they'll take your entire PC as luggage.)

Return ticket from CPT - JHB ( Its not JHB- CPT btw) for that weekend costs R1411 each (Go check the website http://www.1time.co.za)
If you are 3 people in a car, you can put most of the stuff in the trunk of the car and if necesary on the back seat ( This works have done it loads of times before)
The worst case is that 1 person would be uncomfortable, but hell, you can swop around between the two guys that aint driving
As for toll gates, petrol and food. Petrol will def cost you less than R1500. Toll gates and food? There is no way that toll fees and food wil be R2000
I think it is clear which is the cheaper option here (unless you are planing to go alone)

In line with the Reserve Bank's announcement to cut interest rates by 100 basis points, 1time thinks flying is a great way to spend your extra cash! From only R309 (one way - all in) on the Jhb-Dbn route, and from only R409 (one way - all in) on the following routes: Jhb-Cpt; Jhb-PE; Jhb-EL; Jhb-George; Cpt-PE; Cpt-Dbn; Cpt-EL, why wouldn't you agree? Book online at www.1time.co.za to take advantage of these fantastic rates. Hurry, seats are limited and will only be available while stocks last.
Quoted from an email 1time sent to its flyers dated 12 May. I can forward you the mail if you'd like.
And 12 to 14 hour drive, like that? No thanks.
Sure, its cheaper if 4 or more guys drive in 1 car, but 4 guys in 1 car wil 4 PCs, sleeping bags/matteresses etc, you better have something spacious.

I doubt the webiste will have incorect prices on. Emails like that are usualy for specific dates only seeing that october is still quite far away i doubt that that email was sent for that dates
It will be cheaper even if just 3 guys are driving.

Do I look like a 1time rep?
Distance travelled 1400KMs(estimate)
Fuel Consumption for VW Jetta : 6l per 100kms, but since it will be fully loaded, lets work on 9L/100km.
Price of Fuel : R7.20 (filled up today at that price)
So 1400 / 100 = 14
14 * 9 = 126
126 * 7.2 = R910(rounded)
910 * 2(there and back) = R1820.
+ accomodation for 3 guys(since you wont drive 14 hours, then pitch up to rage, Lan the entire time, then leave right away.)
R420 pp pn * 3(people) * 2(nights, one before, one after) Link (http://www.wheretostay.co.za/_common/scripts/rates.php?page=/amaqele/)
= R2520
Total Cost ex toll gates and anything I've left out : R4340
So per person by 3 people, thats R1447.
So you were saying?
Yes, driving up is a good option, and can possibly end up cheaper if you skimp, but really now, flying is easier, as cheap(probably cheaper), and as fun.

Where did I say you are a 1time rep, there is usualy some fine print at the bottom that will give you some indication of the terms and conditions, check that out next time, it is quite useful to know stuff like that.
I am sure there is a camping site within 50km radius of the dome, which would make it much cheaper. And 1 or 2 small dome tents dont take up that much space.
And the flight tickets does not include car hire ( last time I hired a car it was roughly R250 per day) so thats an extra R750.
ROAD TRIP!! HELL YEAS!! Will add a bit of an adventure to your journey.
Flying will be quicker ect. but what a hassle to get your pc on a flight and taking the risk of it geting damage (or stolen ) by airport staff. believe me it happens. They wont let you take it in as hand lugguage

I took around R15000 worth of PC equipment down to CT in Feb, arrived without a hitch, so I'm willing to trust them again.
No fine print that I saw in the email, unless you can find any I think thats done and dusted.
You're now discussing what i reffered to in my last post as skimping, so I think I've covered that too.
Actually, its R500, from Friday morning to Sunday mid day they'll charge you for 2 Days, so R500.
Anything else? Not? Good.
Oh, and if people need a place to crib on the thursday night, my place is open depending on how many out of towners I've got at my place(last year it was 7).

I dont call it skimping, camping is much more fun than staying in a guest hous/hotel ect. (unless if you are one of the those guys that think the outdoors are for panzy's)
But the conclusion is it will be more fun and cheaper to drive.
As for our poa for rAge, we gonna book in(or whatever you call it) start leeching and go somewhere to drink, saturday and sunday is for gaming lol
I wonder what interesting stuff they will have at the expo this year

hmmm im taking the flying thing into consideration now cause i remember rAge 2006 we drove up from durbs which wasnt that far but with 5 okes , pcs , sleeping stuff in a double cab it wasnt too bad but still lil bit cramped plus we overkilled on that eye spy game think we used every item in the car was pretty funny till it got out of hand , guys talking about the screws holding the steering wheel together, was overkill. anyway i think i will go take alook at the specials at the airport and see what there prices are like in the months of october and see what i can find, thnx for the 1 time post tho was interesting too look at, and also the fuel consumption explanation , NICE.

For some, not all. I'd rather fly and... ah **** it, I've got a brick wall in my room, 4 of them in fact, I can argue with it, will be as fun as this.
Drive, fly, cycle, don't care, all I know is I'm there like a bear, same as every year since rAge started. :D

the biggest problem i rate with flying is the safe transport of your pc. if that is garunteeed i say fly. anyways awsome for me im driving as live in JHB :D
Ok. Last year i flew up to JHB from East London. I went on 1time. I took my PC stripped out the HDD's GFX Card, ram, cpu cooler etc and put the case into its box it came in. Wrapped some newspaper around the sides to fill the space. Taped it closed then wrapped it at the airport (R20 i think for that wrapping small price to pay) then checked it in. Took the loose parts in my hand luggage. Keyboard went in my check in luggage too. I had to pay a little overweight charges but then it depends what case you have (I have Aercool Baydream which is 18kg empty lol) then on the way back to EL i did the same thing and at JHB Airport they never charged me excess baggage (Nice guys) and all was fine. My PC was 100% fine ok maybe 99.9% all that happned was a small almost nonvisible dent on the case at one of the corners.
One thing though i didnt take my Screen i borrowed one from a clan mate in JHB that couldnt make Rage. Now this year i am taking my screen and will get a screen bag for it and take it with as hand luggage on the plane.
Alternatively there are alot of people from Cpt that are going on the train. This is going to be an epic epic journey and if you guys are interested in looking into that option here is a link Forum Link to details (http://forum.iburst-gaming.com/index.php?topic=1215.0) its a long topic but at the end there is a care pack for download with details on the train times, costs etc.
If i had to choose between flying and Driving i would fly no doubt.
Also last year before i flew a few guys mentioned they couriered their PC's up there before they left which is also an option when you flying to look at. I checked and couldnt find anyone cheap enough here in EL but in CPT you might have better luck.

I live in CPT and have been to rAge 3 times. I have always flown, even if it is a bit more sometimes.
I put everything in a hard cover plastic suitcase except for my box. I wrap my keyboard, mouse, lcd in bubble wrap, then cover with sleeping bag. This is checked in as fragile, not that it really makes a difference i guess :P
My box is wrapped in multiple layers of bubble wrap and taken on as hand luggage which i put in the overhead compartment. I have never had any damage done to my equipment, not even minor data loss.

No mattresses allowed I think, not sure - last year there was a nice chill area on the 2nd floor with some bean bags and a Chip 'n Dip close by :) I just chilled on one of the bags for 2 hours and after that I was gaming again.

We got a room at City Lodge (or Road Lodge), Randburg, for R800 per person from the Friday to the Monday. Not bad. It will obviously just be used for a little sleep and a shower. I'm driving from Durbs and the rest of the clan is coming from Kathu, Northern Cape - yes, we're all over the place...
