All my parts finally arrived today. But seeing as I've left my exams for the last minute, i don't exactly have time to sit and fiddle tonight. So I'm gonna leave it for today, and do it tomorrow.

Specs:

Intel Core i7 920 CPU
Asus Rampage II Gene Mobo
Patriot Viper Series XMP 3x2Gb DDR3 1600 RAM
Seagate Barracuda 500Gb HDD
Mushkin GTX 260 896mb GFX
Vantec Ion 2 PSU
Cooler Master CM960
LG 22x DVD-RW
Zboard Bundle

Ill be needing some help as its been ages since I built a rig, but i guess its like riding a bicycle. I think the hardest part will be keeping the cables all tidy, as the PSU has a kilometer of wires :P Also any advice on prepping the workspace, what to start with, order of assembly, will be appreciated.

And iv just finished downloading Windows 7 RC 64

Cannot wait to try it out!

Order of Assembly (in my opinion):

- Put the motherboard's back plate in first.
- Put the PSU in.
- Now whilst the motherboard is not fitted inside do the following:
-> Fit the processor & HSF.
-> Fit the RAM.
-> Wire the power switch, reset switch, front panel USBs, front audio, HDD LED and power LED.
- Fit & secure your motherboard into the case.
- Pop in your HDD and DVD-RW, secure them with screws.
- Pop out the required slots for your graphics card from the back of the case.
- Fit the graphics card.
- Wire the PSU to everything requiring power.

What are you using for CPU cooling?

Nice rig dude.

My preferred order of building a machine:
1) Board, CPU and RAM put together outside the case.
2) Prep the case - remove side panels (both sides, so the other side doesn't get scratched up), install copper screw stand things, remove front panel drive bay covers as necessary. Install motherboard IO shield and remove rear expansion bay covers as necessary.
3) Install PSU in case.
4) Install motherboard in case (hang the bulk of PSU cables outside the case so they don't get in the way).
5) Install optical drives and hard drives
6) Install expansion cards like video cards and whatnot
7) Connect everything up - power cables first so you can cable tie them down before they get in the way.
8) Close up the case, safe in the knowledge that everything will boot perfectly the first time.

Oddly enough that's not far off Zen's.

Um the CPU Cooling fan?

Thanks for the help guys, i think i know what i intend to do now :)

Just FYI, the case is pretty kitted out, it has cable clamps lining the drive bays. makes for easy cable tidyness. Another thing that im confused about is the motherboard. It has a start button? does this button play a factor in the initial boot up or assembly? Now iv just got to make sure i put the right cables in the right place :P

What Geo said. My advice, just get everything together and working before you try neaten the cables. No use spending an hour with the cables just to find something somewhere doesn't want to play nice.

Oh, and the one thing I hated about my CM690(which is a very nice case), the "cable management system", otherwise known as "oh **** off you stupid black clip **** **** waste of plastic!!". Maybe you'll have more luck with them. :/ Are you planning on adding more 120mm fans to the case?

Yeah, i noticed that. There are a **** load of those black clips. :P
I remember reading a review on the case. Saying it was difficult to get the cables tidy, but very difficult, not impossible tho.

I was def thinking about adding extra fans. At least one at the bottom and one at the top.

Did you get the non windowed or windowed version? I had a fan in each slot, and managed to get one on the front in the drive bay area, which isn't all that loud if you get silent or variable speed fans, really was worth it. My advice though, consider water cooling, its an absolute dream with that case. But I guess after a build like that finances are feeling it for a few months. :(

It is the windowed version. Mine has a fan in the front already, but it seems like such a mission to replace. Yeah the case was made for water cooling, but im in no position to even think about it right now.

Not the bottom front one, I had one top front. :) Gives nice clean airflow towards the CPU, i found it helped. Still, that rig is very awesome, any chance you can found out if the CPU is a C0 or D0 stepping? Don't think I can really fault you on any of your choices(and you know how I love to nit pick ;)), you did your homework, so may your rig give you many hours of gaming joy. :)

Sweet jesus. Didn't think a fan could get in there. As for the stepping. Apaarently there is no way of telling until its set up and the pc is running. But if they stopped producing the C0 and started making the D0. Then i have the later i think, as it was packaged on the 5 may. But ill let you know when i do :)

Its actually quite easy :P

Im nearly finshed with the assembly. After ripping out a few of thos black clips i could make space. Everything seems like a tight fit. But im managing. Here is where im stuck:
I dont have a 8 pin EATX12V connector on my PSU. But i do have a 4 pin, do i just put it in half? The psu manual, has a picture with the 4 pin in half the 8 pin on the motherboard. But i have no idea. Connecting all the internal cables is harder than i thought. My fingers hurt :(

I realised once i had a proper look the pins were specific shapes. So it could only go one way. Thanks for the reasurance! Once i tidy up the cables i should be ready for the first boot of orgasms

First time boot success! Surprise!

This took longer than expected as I've just got GH:2 and Iv already finished hard :P

I updated win7 and got the nvidia optional update.
But i cant instal the drivers from my mobo disc as it says that it doesn't recognise the OS. also i need .Net Framework, Iv tried installing it through MS but it keeps on having a system error? Any thing else I should do before I run 3d mark 06?

Okay, you're connected to the internet right? Try download the .net framework for Vista (dont use Internet Explorer 8, it sucks and it has lots of bugs. Firefox is way better) and then use compatibility mode to run it as Vista SP1, and you might also want to run the program as Administrator. You can do this for all the drivers, just copy them onto your desktop and do the same thing (you'll have to dig into your CD for this one).

Nice job for a first-timer ^_^ God I wish that was my computer

I built my own rig and the way its ment to be done is assemble the core parts of the PC outside the case
(eg: on top of the motherboard box) Connect main parts such as processor, RAM, graphics card and then switch it on to see if it POSTS...If is does and all is well you can but the motherboard straight in without having to remove the hardware from it..I found its better to put the PSU in last so you can sort out the cables neatly (hide them under stuff eg: feed them under the motherboard tray). I hav had my RIG for about 9 months now and its time for an upgrade i think although i am not going to upgrade to core i7 yet as it doesnt really affect game performace much over a core 2 quad...i would rather opt for a better graphics card..like the GTX 295!! All the best with it and keep us posted..

Cloud_Ratha
04-06-2009, 09:53 PM
Well i did built my mobo and cpu and ram in the box. If i put my psu in last it would have been an abortion. The graphic card got in the way of all the cabling. Let alone trying to put all the connectors in. But I guess your way has better troubleshooting. I guess im just lucky everything worked out first time :P
My PC is mainly for graphics and games. I love the fact that i can open all the cs3 apps i want and interchange between them with out lag or memory issues. I love my baby!

The mouse and headset are pretty standard. Think the mouse is 1600dpi. The keyboard is very awesome tho. Its got a huge selection of mods for games. Which gets updated regularly. Iv never had fancy keyboard, so iv still got to try it out. It also has 3 custom buttons, and multimedia controls. Its a good buy imo.

Nice rig Cloud, got the same case as you and my word, I thought I was going to snap the front cover in half when trying to remove it, even though it feels as if it's good quality. I just put a couple 120mm fans left over from my old case on the bottom and the top(bottom intake and top exhaust) and everything is keeping nice and cool.

Now all you need is a desk to put your rig on ;)

Haha yeah i need to get more fans in. You actually have to force the front panel quite a bit before it gives way. I must get more fans. They are so cheap its silly not to.

Oh btw I do have a desk, it was just too messy with files, books, huge drawing pad and general crap. Im moving it back today after my last exam! Just wanted to make sure that everything was running smoothly.

Got it not too long ago, as i use it to watch tv from, got a tv card in there as well. Just realised, if I wanted to SLi the graphic cards would run over the other pci slot. :(
Also my gtx 260 requires two 6 pin power inputs. My PSU which is SLi ready only had 2 pci express connectors, if i got an extra graphic card, what would happen?

My current computer specs are:

MOBO - MSI G31M3 - L V2
CPU - Intel Pentium Dual Core E5200 2.5GHz
RAM - 1GB Kingston DDR667

I just wanted to know which CPU and RAM I should upgrade to?

I looked at Take 2 and they had a Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16GHz and a Core 2 Quad Q8300 2.5GHz going for the same price.Which of these would be the better option?

And RAM wise I see that I could either go for OCZ 2X 2GB DDR800 or Kingston ValueRam 2X 2GB DDR800?

I would really appreciate help on these choices.

Choose neither. I contend that people who are considering the purchase of upgrades for their Intel PC in the mainstream segment should now wait and hold out for the Intel Core i5. In the meantime, get yourself a 2*1GB set of DDR2-800 memory, and save up the rest of your money for the i5 release in September/October. You could also buy yourself a better CPU cooler and try overclock your E5200, it should reach 3Ghz+ with ease.

uhm, somehow i dont think a 550W is going to be able to hold 2 gtx 260's and the i7. i may be horrendously wrong, but chev whould know (obviously :)

Use the Update function to check for updates for your sound. I also recommend updating your DX10 install if you can, then running dxdiag, going to the sound tab and setting the hardware sound acceleration to full. Its a brand-new motherboard, and I've seen people claim that Win7 runs perfectly on it, so the sound has to work.

If you want to go the mATX route(look out for my column in coming months that sort of touches on this), and want something other than thermalcrap(the company who have now put a bottle holder on the side of a case), i'd suggest this (http://www.lian-li.com/v2/en/product/product06.php?pr_index=317&cl_index=1&sc_index=25&ss_index=64&g=d).

Hey look, a bottle holder on the side of the chassis! Now I can drink beer and game without spilling a drop! SCORE! :-P

And Lian's are way too expensive, an Aerocool Aerocube would do the job just as well.

Compare the price of a Lanbox to the Lian Li that i linked too, simmilar in price, so price is no problem. :P

If you want cheap, go for this. (http://www.prophecy.co.za/isonic-aluminum-cube-uatx-chassis-silver-p-22943.html)

Got one of those and its not that bad for the price. Lian li is gorgeous but lacks the nice carry handle and they fall in high price bracket. What exactly is wrong with thermalcrap-the write ups looks very positive on that case.

I know this is a huge necro, but i dont care. I just felt to thank all the guys who put info and support into buying this monstrocity! It has changed my life. You guys know who you are and you rock!

Also I have noticed that people have been asking similar questions about similar parts. So have a read through. Some sound advice to be found!

Btw Cloud_Ratha, did you manage to get a 3DMark06 score of more than 16000?

It is a very good score, but I am sure you could squeeze more out of your uber-rig. I can get a couple hundred points over 16000 with the same gfx card and 4gigs ddr2-800 ram and a q9400 oc'ed to 3.2Ghz. That is why I asked, because your rig should (I think) easily be able to trump mine.

Well everything is on standard. I haven't tweaked anything. I should prob read up on it. But to be honest, it plays the games i play at full. Im not gonna fiddle till i need to!
