So, I noticed that there's a sever absence of posts and threads correlating to Magic: The Gathering, so I thought I'd make one... Well, to start the ball rolling, I have an artifact deck, full of Arcbound creatures and Golems, and the means to bring them back from the graveyard to really excersise the awesomeness of the modular counters. Anyone else got summat' to contribute?

I love Magic: The Gathering. Have a deck or two, but I have no idea how the game works. planning to download MTGO next month. ;)
Could anyone explain the BASIC rules to me?

Used to play it a lot, but moved to an area where no-one plays it or have stopped, so I sold my decks :(

The best option would be to find someone to teach you in person though.

I dunno where you live, but i have found that the best place to learn was always the outer limits store in melville(sp?), on a saturday(though i havn,'t been in a long time :(). I luckly have ooldes of crads thanks to some very good friends & deals :P, but generrally there is never time to go find other people to play with unless they are friends, which is why I use Magic Workstation, nowhere near as GOOD as owning the cards an RL playing, but it works

I used to play a fair bit in my teens but hadn't touched the game since, until recently. Some mates and I picked up a handful of Ravnica prebuilds from Outer Limits for R50 a pop and are playing with those - reliving our childhoods so to speak. It's fun. Don't know if I'm yet at that stage to drop a grand a month on some rares, but I must just get back into it.

Outer Limits is super awesome... The Commons Cupboard and the Rare Files have everything you need to start a deck... 50c per card from the commons cupboard, and R5 to R350 for stuff from the rare files. Incidentally, I'm looking for some of the Arcbound Artifact Creatures. Is there anyone who lives around Jo'burg that I can buy them from? Or trade some other cards, even. Also, as a bonus incentive to get cards from Outer Limits, there's a GameXchange right across the road! As well as a variety of ATM's, placed just close enough that you can run to them quickly when you realise you've gone over budget

Living in Bloemfontein, I do struggle to find cards. I do send one of my mates over to Outer Limits when he goes to Joburg though. Suprisingly, actually finding games is not hard. A lot of my friends play and they have weekly tournaments at the university.

Thanx Flan. I followed the links and after following more links, I found this (http://www.wizards.com/magic/playmagic/EN-uk/LearnToPlay.htm).
it contains links to different Youtube videos and even a Learn to Play application (85mb), which I'm downloading now.

Ah man, used to love this game. Wow.
Had myself 2 extremely powerful goblin and elf decks, I hardly ever lost.
The goblin deck, was just pure spam, by the third turn I would usually have 4-5 creatures and I would just destroy any opponents creatures with instant damaging spells.
My elf deck was a bit more passive, it focused on each elf helping another one out. My favourite combo was getting this enchantment on one which gave it +2/2 for each elf in play, combine that with a card which makes all forests 1/1 elves and gives +1/1 to all elves, you end up with a rather powerful 20/20.

It has two tutorials, one for the basic game and another one which adds enchantments and sorcery. I still need to beat the second tutorial...

By the way, if anybody in the Jo'burg area feels like a meet n' greet at a tournament, give me a PM! I'm always up for meeting like-minded awesome people!

I used to play FNM at the Oracle shop back in the day but that was 2 years ago.
I always play a black library and I absolutely love the Abyssal Spectre/Rat/Megrim combos (lifedamage and your hand cards get discarded!). The only times I play with another colour is when I combine Black and White and that's ONLY in team games.
My favourite card still comes from the Betrayers of Kamigawa series: That which was Taken
(Artifact: Tap 5 :Put a divinity counter on any card except on "That which was Taken". Cards with a divinity counter is indestructable.)

Err, there is a rather large tournament held at the Pretoria university every year for Magic the Gathering. Apparently a new set of rules has just been released as well.
Friend of mine is one of the judges there so give me a shout if you want to know what the schedules are for the game in the country and so forth.

I also played at Oracle around that time - in fact, we've probably met! My personal preferences: Blue, and Black-White - I LOVE the latter! Even in 1v1, I've made some pretty credible decks in those colours (including one which got me through Regionals and into National Trials.)
In other news: Wizards of the Coast have announced the next edition of the MtG rules. I must say, I am not at all happy with some of the more drastic revisions. Overall, it feels like WotC are dumbing down the game to make it more "accessible" to beginners - but at the cost of alienating veterans! I would have thought that some of the other CCGs out there (not going to name them, as I don't want to appear to dis them) already make a perfectly good entry point into this game type - leave MtG to be the more cerebral, "graduate" game. Oh well, bottom lines always sing the loudest, I guess...

Damn it's a small wolrd lol. I might have met with NAG staff and I didn't even know it! Does anyone know if the Oracle still hosts FNM?
