View Full Version : Connecting to the internetz

I just got my iburst. This is the first time I've had the internetz at home. To commemorate this event I'll be running a poll and asking"how do you connect to the internet at home?".
If I've left out your option let me know so I can add it in.

Used to be dial-up...but thankfully now I have adsl :)

I'm on iBurst, and am thankfully very close to the tower, so I get about the full speed for downloads (a steady 120KB/s). Only problem is that gaming is virtually impossible, especially on international servers.
Had I known that ADSL prices were going to drop as much as they had when I got my iBurst, I'd have rather gone through the god-knows-how-long waiting period to get my line installed, but I guess you live and learn.
But yeah, I sure do feel like a tit paying R800 a month (12 month contract w/ iBurst modem with a 5% discount), when I could be paying R550+R110 odd and get a free router and be at "up to" 4 times faster, with lower latencies. I'll just ride out the next 6 months with iBurst and then go through the whole process of actually getting a line installed.

Why do you pay R800 a month? :O
I pay only R469. That's a 1.5 GB cap, with shunting to a throttled line once that's up.

I'm on the 3.5 GB package, and being on the 12 month contract as opposed to a 24 month or monthly with the modem pre-purchased is a fair bit more expensive. 1.5 just wouldn't be enough for our usage, and the 64K after the cap is too painful to bear with two users browsing at the same time.
I know, I probably should have just coughed up the dosh for the modem, but I tend to not have R2000 lying around that often.

My dad pays for my 4megs/s line but we get through the cap pretty damn fast.
Were sitting at 105% and were being 'carefull'
Still it is nice haveing decent speeds and low pings.

got a 384 line with a 10GB cap, is kay, but I'd much rather have a uncapped acount.
Anyone here maybe part of the Neotel trial period that started this month ?

We use iBurst at home, 3.5Gb cap, I think we pay about R600 - R700 per month. We had an ADSL 384 line (3Gb cap, R7 for every extra 100Mb, we used 3Gb's extra once, my mom was not happy...), until some damn idiot stole the phone lines. That was about a month ago, they're still not back up... *sigh*
At least iBurst is faster though (we have good connection, even though we stay kinda far from the tower, ah well, works for me :D) and the latency is OK. A little higher but gaming is still possible without lag, unless the server is full (ie: 64 player BF2 server, which is completely full).

Well. As everyone can see it's my first time with internet at home. Today i purchased original copies of warcraft 3 and frozen throne. Can someone tell me how to set it up so that i play on south african servers?

Uh. . . install it, register your Battle.net thing, then look for servers. Note: I don't play wc, so I'm playing by ear.

Go here (http://www.war3.co.za/forum/) for all the info you'll need. I think there's another site as well, but for the life of me, I can't remember it.
Just don't expect all that much other than DotA.

Where is the 'No Internet Connection' option?
Are you serious?

Think you could put the incredulity aside for a few seconds and assume I am indeed serious? I don't have an internet connection personally, I only use internet at work.

At the moment I also only have access to the Internet at work, that will have to change over the next couple of months though, I am buying a 360 in about 2 days :)

I was just surprised. That's all. I know you like making use of steam. Guess I shouldn't have assumed you had it at home.
Btw, How do I edit my poll?
Miktar
23-07-2007, 11:17 AM
I do like making use of Steam, and as I have said multiple times in threads you read - I bring my PC to the office, download, take it home.
I don't know if you can edit your poll, actually...

There - I added the 'none' option to the poll for you. :)

ADSL at home with a crappy router - tend not to play online as my mother already chows the bandwidth when she chats to my sister in the UK [via GTalk]
Good internet connection at work, with a solid 2MB link to the UK (eventhough its for work and accessing our servers and not for downloads) And I can kick the crap out of the ISP if it doesn't since they are one building down

ADSL..I have a 1024 bit line....and I tested it on www.speedtest.net and these are the results.
http://www.speedtest.net/result/158941432.png (http://www.speedtest.net)
Which according to the site is faster than 83% of South African speeds but only 36% faster than International speeds..
Yet we are still way behind international standards...the World average is 3000kb...and Japans speeds go up to 8400kb.

I'm taking a quess that our interwebz is about a 384k or 512k line of mweb kind with 3gb cap and 1g booster in middel or end of month... my pc is connected via a 108mbps wifi connection to a wifi hub witch all our pc's laptops and mac notebooks are linked to... hoping to get uncapped 384k line... maybe share it with neighbors.

We always have connection issues here at the office, but that's because we're in Fourways, Business Central, with a weak exchange.

4mb ADSL.
And a little bit of luck, I guess.
Chevron
26-07-2007, 02:12 PM
Shouldn't the dl speed of a 4mb line at least be over 3mb or somewhere close to 4mb? You're only getting half your speed. Have you complained yet?
brazed
26-07-2007, 02:13 PM
Well, it's actually a 1mb line, with some people getting the 4mb service. So, I can't complain. When I'm paying for a 4mb line, then, yes. This connection is a dream for downloading, btw.

I wish we were still connected to Fourways exchange, we're routed to Diepsloot exchange now. Cables just go missing ! :(

Stuck with 32K Wireless right now, unlimited cap and always on - R370 a month but soon, when that darn contract ends, we'll switch ISPs. With this wireless you have to pay extra for the router (R3000 o_o) but since we already have one, we won't need to pay again. The new ISP wil be 512K Wireless with a 3gig limit for R400 (10c a meg after that).
We don't pay for, or want, a phone-line so its perfect. I'm thinking if I were to get ADSL, at the same speed, and a phone-line, it'll probably end up being close to R600 or more? Not sure how much you get charged for your phone-line these days, though. Last year, when I checked, you'd have to pay R120 for the phone-line, R200 extra to make it a ADSL line and then your R200 or more for ISP? Anyway, doesn't seem like most of you really worry about that, cause your parents pay, don't they? =P (<-- Only meant as joke ^^)

I finally got ADSL yesterday, 384 line and a 3gig cap. After having dial-up for so long it's awesome.
What a mission though as Telkom phoned twice to say they got the self-install packages back in stock and when I went to Telkom Direct to pick it up some how they mysteriously didn't have them anymore.

Hopefully we can get ADSL in about 3 weeks time. All we need to do is get 10 people to register for it in our area and we can get it. :)

Why? Is that like some rule Telkom made up?
Antharias
03-08-2007, 09:50 AM
Yup that it is. Have to have 10 people submit applications before they will enable ADSL in the area, even though the exchange has free jacks. It is bull**** to be honest.

lol. Yeah. Oh well. If I get ADSL I just have to try and convince my dad that while 4 gigs will be enough, basing the estimation on the dial-up usage is stupid.

Have 4mbit ADSL with a 3GB cap.
Why yes, the cap does diminish very quickly.
