Yes, District 9 is a theatrical hit, and now its 35-year old unknown lead Sharlto Copley is joining the Hollywood big leagues. Twentieth Century Fox confirms that the South African Copley will play the goofy oddball pilot H.M. ?Howling Mad? Murdoch in Twentieth Century Fox?s remake of The A-Team from director Joe Carnahan. Also, joining the cast of Liam Neeson (Col. John ?Hannibal? Smith), Bradley Cooper (Lt. Templeton ?Face? Peck), and Quinton ?Rampage? Jackson (B.A. Baracas) is Jessica Biel who will portray an ex-flame of Faceman?s. Watchmen?s Patrick Wilson will also be featured as a CIA operative. While the premise of Carnahan?s A-Team will still center on four war vets wrongly convicted of a crime they didn?t commit, the tone will be less silly and more slick. Production has already begun on the Vancouver-based set with the high-octane actioner set to bow next June.

Imo, i think Copley could be a great Murdock. I hope this is only the beginning of awesome things to come from him. Also, i grew up watching the A-Team, so i am looking forward to this.

My prediction: he's going to be ****. He looks the part, but the guy isn't an actor. He really isn't. It's not hard to act like a thick Afrikaaner when you're surrounded by them all the time. When Copley tried to play an American in a short film they made years ago, his performance was pretty **** poor.

I get a similar feeling. His performance was riveting in D9 because of its mockumentary style complimenting his ad-libbed everyday ordinary afrikaans dude character, it felt real and convincing because it is real.
His acting itself, separate from the accent however, I found quite good. He truly lived into the events unfolding around him so I'd not write him off just yet. Chances are he's improved since that yank short.

I share the sentiments. I wonder if he'll be able to pull it off. Will be rather surprised if he does.

Onona really?Or is it just because you despise the guy, and that that utterly clouds your judgment on the matter?I think he did a superb job in all aspects in Distric9.
Also ^5 on the Afrikaner comment. For one that angers so easily when others perpetuate negative stereotypes about women for instances, you sure are quick to hurl the same thing around when it's a equally pernicious stereotype you aren't personally offended by.
Practice what you preach please.

I'm not so petty that I'd let my personal feelings towards someone cloud my judgement of their abilities. Sharlto is a talented guy, but acting isn't really one of his strengths. And I know. I worked with the guy for a year and a half, I was with him every day. The guy used to clown around a lot, doing impressions and stuff. But that's all he's really good at. Skits and improv and stuff like that. Playing a character from a script is a totally different ballgame.

Wut? His character in the film was a stupid Afrikaaner. They even said as much in the film itself, and his own dialogue revealed him as being pretty intellectually stunted, so it wasn't just any antagonist's negative opinions about him. Are you denying this, or what exactly is your point? Are you saying his character in the film wasn't a tad on the thick side?
[edit]
Unless you think I am somehow suggesting that all Afrikaans people are stupid? I didn't say that, in fact I said nothing of the sort, so I don't get why you're accusing me of stereotyping here. I said it's not hard to impersonate stupid people when you're surrounded by them all the time. I used the word "Afrikaaner" because his character was an Afrikaaner. I'm sorry but I am not so politically correct that I can't admit that there is a huge percentage of any population that's pretty fecking stupid, and we're all unfortunately surrounded by them all the time. No-one ever has any issue going on about "stupid rednecks" in America, for example. Why should it be any different to point out that there are stupid people who speak Afrikaans? Stupid people are everywhere, and as such it's not hard to impersonate them. His character was an Afrikaaner, and that's why I specifically mentioned them. Happy now?
I think, as a longstanding member here, that I have more than proved that I am not some dumbsh!t troll who'd post blatant stereotyping flamebait with the sole intention of offending half the members here. If there is one thing that no-one can accuse me of, it's being a hypocrite. Give me some credit.

Ag **** here we go again... sigh.... :/
I'm not gonna expect anything big from him that way if he sucks then its ok if he is good then I'm surprised.
Also I must say I can't wait to see Liam Neeson, I love that guy.

Copley?
Aw...
I was hoping for Jim Carry! But then the movie would never get a sequel.
Anywho, I haven't seen District 9... yet. So I'm just going to hold thumbs and hope he has what it takes. I love the A-Team and it deserve one heck of a movie!

Fair enough. It just came off to me as you saying that Afrikaners in general are thick, and that is something I have a major chip on my shoulder about.

Yeah, in reading my reply again after I read yours, I realised I could have phrased it much better, and can see how it could be taken the wrong way. Some of the nicest people on this forum are Afrikaans, so I would never have posted anything with the intention of offense.

It's just something I take personal offense to very quickly seeing as I'm Afrikaans. All's well that ends well though, obviously just a misunderstanding. Thanks for clearing it up.
From what I've read I agree with onona, it seems that impressions are his only strong point.
But, let's give him a chance, he might surprise us, again.
Anyway, the guy that's playing B.A looks like a twat. I'm ****ing white and I'll make a better B.A.
I'm just glad Patrick Wilsons's in the movie.
That is all.

Well when I first heard old Heath Ledger was going to bethe Joker I thought it was a bad move but that was because I was comparing it to Jack Nicholson, well obviously I was wrong and Heath created something totally unique.
Now then other than D9 I haven't seen anything else from Sharlto but I think he could make a good version of Murdoch. In fact I really hope they don't try to recreate the old A-team because that will be a fail.
Using the same premise and storyline is fine but it must be a movie on it's own first!

It has a killer cast imo. I've mostly seen Bradley Cooper in comedies (Wedding Crashers, The Hangover) so it's hard to say how he'll adapt to being an action hero. Never heard of the guy playing B.A.
Liam Neeson... Badass personified. Anybody remember Taken?
