I liked rage. It was actually very well done.
I take my hats off to the security and organisers of the LAN as they were friendly and informative. They new their stuff and helped at any stage with whatever you had an issue with.
They also arrested a kid trying to steal a mouse (sad people of the world present...) which made me feel a whole lot better about leaving my PC their on friday night.
It was expensive for me to get there. My thermostate in my car went tits up on the way so that was R350, plus I subscribed to NAG while I was there (very proud) and food and petrol all added up to a major depresiation in the funds department.
I was at the NAG meet and greet but didn't attend the spur supper.
Azimuth was there so guess how nervous I was :-P
Good to meet Yumi kitty and see Kensai again.
The Energy drink on promo was also great. Nice taste and I felt it kick. Thanks to them for the free samples, kept me going.
There were Viruses. Even my firewall was hanging by a thread after 2 major attacks left it needing online patches. Next year I demand that Viral Nuubs be forced to scan their **** before they log on! I'm getting tired of their ignorance.
I had to say that the fever gets you and that people would buy **** just because they can.
A kid got his dad to buy him an 8800Ultra and a 630watt PSU as well.
Another kid paired his 8800GTS to run SLi while buying the same high cost PSU as above.
I sat there and watched a kid pass out from LANing for 3 days straight. WE thought he had been drugged (is it possible to get date rapped at a LAN? :-/) but he had some sleep, drank some water and was fine. Koreans spring to mind at this stage.
I think Rage is waaay better then Mayhem but thats just because of organsation and general support.
DC++ was in full swing with some users sharing 2TB of Pron. Download speeds were as high as 15MB/s.
I stayed till saterday, 11pm when I left to attened my moms birthday on sunday.
Seeing Miktar and GLDM again was a laugh. Ice cream...!!!
Stands were again top notch and the Wii was in full swing but not dominating the area like the 360 did last year.
Would I attened again? Yeah why not.
This time I will sleep there and get all the worldly comforts possible.
Some XL team members were there (Scorpion and Killa) but mainly met up with mates from my school years.
I liked that the stands selling stuff had specials and where up for bartering. My mate didn't have R50 extra needed for his 8600GT so they knocked R50 off. Bravo.
Other then that I will post a really funny picture in a sec which i found ironic.
Hope your time at rage was grand, share your views if you will.
Thanks, {XL}=Frozen=

was sooo awesome! I havent slepped since thursday night so im feeling it. Was glad to see DC++ up but the speeds varied among hosts (HUB speeds?). Quake Wars consumed me so when I wasn't leeching thats what I was doing.
Played some guitar hero 2 at the nag stand, faceoff Laid to Rest Expert was awesome. Was really kwl idea to set it up. Maybe have a competition on the huge spectator screen next time?
Deals were good, got a Razor Deathadder and then walked across to BT games in Northgate and bought a Microsoft/Razer Reclusa keyboard cause they weren't being sold at the expo. Kwl keyboard.
I saw that guy who tried to steal. He was surrounded by security (one with an M4) and being questioned etc. Very efficient. Anyone remember the strict Afrikaans wrist-band checker? He asked me to show him every time I went for a smoke. All in all, excellent orginisation, lots of fun and awezome leeching. That Play drink is awesome for all-nighting :)

I think I saw you. The mouse and pad boxes were on top of your chassie right?

My view on rage is that as a lan it's great but as a gaming expo it flat out sucks. Maybe my standards are way to high but it doesn't offer anything which I expect a gaming expo to offer.
There was no brand new games or hardware that hasn't been released before for a first time public view. Neither was there anyone of the developers for any of the upcoming hot game releases there to answer question on their upcoming games. This is what happens at the major gaming expo's around the globe.
Also in many cases the hardware which was on sale, the prices got pushed up just for the rage expo. A lot of the hardware on sale was being sold at higher prices than normal now imho that is misleading the public and deliberately taking advantage of the noobs.
I they could improve on these 3 issues Rage could be excellent.
Thats my opinions on past rage events and what I was told by guys who attended this year.

Overall it was good, it was my first year. The LAN was great, but the expo was less than i expected. I only wish there were sum more warcraft non-dota servers and some more comps.
When i arrived i didnt have a red power plug so mine could not fit in the plugs but i finally bought one at northgate.
My parents were paranoid about the pcs and theft, but i was very impressed with the security and the network was stable although laggy at times...

Great, I actually got to play the Wii(I am fufilled) and so did my Dad, so now we're definately getting one. I also discovered the power of energy drinks.
A tad dissapointing with the freebies, not as much last year. I still got something though. Next year me and 3 other freinds are going to the LAN next year.
All in all it was great. My feet would disagree though.
Also I played Guitar Hero 3. I sucked so badly.

It was great. The only problem was the servers, I don't know if it was just where I was sitting or the entire lan but the server dropped about 4 times.
Other than that... See you next year :)

rage was cool exept for a few mis-haps this year
I got 1gb ddr2 800mhz for R299 which was really cool, I also caught 4 watches and got 4 of those metal mouse
pads.
nar
uto: rise of the ninja beta on xbox 360 was really good (It's fun to jitsu the crap out of the newcomers ;-)*)
the negative stuff were:
I struggled for about
two hours with my friend's pc on arrival to finally figure out the ram slot was dirty
we searched for 40 min for our compeditors in the dota comp to tell them we are quickly going to spur just to come back and hear we've been disqualified (it was all Pieter Venter(Cyrus)'s fault).
My jacket got mixed up with my friends' stuff so I couldn't find it and they left it there
the network was a bit unstable but it wasn't bad
next year I'm gonna make sure we(ck) win the dota comp.

What about the Xbox360 Launch last year?
Xbox 360 first launch in SA not global. Been done before that at other gaming expos. Been seen nothing new, not exiting to me.
Again my standards are probably too high. I don't get exited with first in SA things. I want something which I can't see or read on the net else it's old news to me. When going to a gaming expo I expect to see something new which I haven't see or read about before and this doesn't happen at Rage. Hence Rage doesn't excite me.

This was my first time at rage and I must say I enjoyed it alot. Played abit with the Wii. Quite a awesome little console. Spent way to much money on stuff people will think I realy don't need but in my case do (like the logitec 5.1 suround sound). Bought some nice gundam models.

Well Im use to going to computex which if you compare it to rAge, rAge only has one 20th of what computex had. However unlike rAge computex you have to walk for hour’s non stop just to try and see everything there is.
Computex been aimed at businesses and rAge at the public the size difference is understandable. and yes its my first time at rAge
All in all it was nice a bit disappointing. The two things that I found wrong with rage was
1) I didn’t feel as though the lighting did anything to create some sort of atmosphere like the Xbox 360 launch. Astmosphere can do wonders to warp people’s perception of what going on.
2) OMG look Enemy terrotory: Quake wars , OMG look this ****er been sitting in front of the pc for 4 hours playing. *******s not allowing for visitors to play.
I know that an event doesn’t dictate how much fun you have but you dictate how much fun you have. So regardless of what rAge was I still enjoyed it immensely the booth babes were nice to talk to the average visitor was nice to talk even the security guards where nice to talk too.
Would I go again? Yeah definitely its 40 bucks once a year.

My second trip to Rage, after going to the first one a few years ago.
I was impressed overall. The show certainly has grown, and despite maybe not having anything totally new out there, I got to see and play a few games that haven't been released yet like Virtua Fighter 5 (yeah baby) COD 4 (looking a treat) Quake Wars and a few others.
The biggest impression was made by the smallest hardware, the Wii. I was glad to finally get to see hands-on what the machine is all about, and it looks brilliant. For me, it stole the show.
I resisted the temptation to buy some new hardware, but my friend almost literally had to drag me away from oogling those snazzy Cooler Master cases. At least I finally got me a copy of Halo 3 though...
All in all, I had a good time. For 40 bucks, can you ask for more?

I liked everything at rAge, but to be honest, I was expecting a bit more. I thought that most of the vendor stands were poorly set out, making it very difficult to find things.
As press, I got to sit in on the AMD/ATI talk, which was really some foriegner promising that AMD is bringing something big out before the end of the year, but didn't give any specifics. He wouldn't answer my questions about the up coming triple core, and wouldn't give me a straight answer when I asked about how ATI has lost the crown of most powerful GFX card, and what their plan/excuse was. On the upside though, we did get a free copy of ET: Quake Wars just for showing up. Not a great game imho, but still nice to see that AMD know what gamers want
I enjoyed finanlly getting to play Halo 3 MP. Lots of fun.
Would have been nice if there was beer there too.
All in all, was a very cool time. Wish I had the time to attend the LAN. Will be there next year though

I wished there were more openly advertised specials, but for me Rage was always about seeing a lot of cool stuff in one place, and again it didn't dissapoint. The Wii is absolutely incredible.
All in all I enjoyed it once again. Finaly got my xbox an optical cable for the sound (YAY!).
The only thing was I had to wash my hair when I got home... :|

I'm sorry to hear that you didn't like the expo, but I would like to make a few points.
At the Megarom stand, and at other stands, there were games for people to play that are not even released yet - preview code, for the public to sample (like Assasin's Creed and PGR 4 to name but a paltry few). You say there were no brand new games that haven't been released before - which is incorrect, sorry. Hardware, I cannot comment on as I do not know much about hardware.
As for not having developers from the upcoming hot games at rAge - that is an unfortunate reality of being in South Africa. rAge is growing - this is only the 5th year of rAge, it took E3 and other expos much longer to reach the status that they have to day: and we've not done bad either - Fatal1ty, for example. We also did have local developers Luma there to talk about their game, which I think is a good substitute for now.
I do think your standards are a bit high, but that's okay - it gives us something to reach for.

Gee I guess you missed Halo 3 being everywhere since it just launched. And ET: Quakewars, which I know a few friends bought at the show. Then there was the pre-release stuff you could play like Guitar Hero III and Assassin's Creed, but I guess you missed that too. I know EA brought a Crysis demo but I heard they had PC problems. Not sure if they ever got it running in time. They had the same issues last year when they brought Spore.
Also in many cases the hardware which was on sale, the prices got pushed up just for the rage expo. A lot of the hardware on sale was being sold at higher prices than normal now imho that is misleading the public and deliberately taking advantage of the noobs.
I bought 4GB of http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/memory/ocz_ddr2_pc2_6400_platinum_revision_2 for R1600. Sometimes you have to hunt around to find the good deals. I know lots of Smilodons were selling well for less than they usually do online.
1) I didn?t feel as though the lighting did anything to create some sort of atmosphere like the Xbox 360 launch. Astmosphere can do wonders to warp people?s perception of what going on.
Well most people want to be able to see everything clearly so that kinda limits what you can do with the lighting. This year I believe the focus was more on crowd flow and layout. You probably didn't notice but the aisles were wider and better laid out this year, it was easier to get through the crowds despite there being more people. The rest area in the middle by the Anat was also new (as was the Anat stand), and seemed to help a lot. If you have specific ideas though, you should post them and maybe the organizers will look at them.

I was there too. He's talking about Barcelona mostly: http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3092
I complained how we haven't even gotten a review sample yet and Anandtech has like 8 of them. I was told they were stolen from motherboard manufacturers (yeah I'm sure they'd let Anand have a full OEM tray of them). Oh and we (NAG specifically) haven't gotten one to benchmark because Barcelona is an Opteron and "Opteron is not for gaming!" (apply thick accent to that BTW). Even when the prevalence of the Opteron 165 was pointed out it was made clear that "We've never supported gaming on Opteron, you have to buy an Athlon FX, because they're different CPUs!" I pointed out this was essentially bull****, as they're identical cores, and the only difference is the FX is priced ridiculously high and isn't as nice an overclocker as the lower speed Opterons. I was told that no this was completely wrong which would mean the core codenames obviously have no relation as to what the actual physical product is. And if you can believe that, I have a bridge to sell you. So AMD's position on gaming in SA is pretty clear to me now.
We also had a fun discussion when there was some mention about AMD's "commitment" to existing platforms and such. I pointed out how Socket 939 was dropped and burned a lot of people. That got a response which involved something about SA perceiving the market differently because it's so backward and behind the rest of the world or something. I pointed out this was utter crap as most of my friends in the US were also quite annoyed at the dropping of S939 but I was told I don't know what I'm talking about.
On the graphics front there was talk of the HD 2900 Pro coming "In a month or so. " I pointed out they were available at the show for R2699. I was basically called a liar, until I came back with pictures of the stand, which were just dismissed as some kind of anomaly or something. Also when Neo and I pointed out a typo in their specs slide (both 2900 Pro and 2900 XT listed at 600MHz when the latter's official spec is 740), they tried to tell me that "Some of the 2900XTs are clocked different". I pointed out that the specs AMD gave me 5 months ago which we'd already printed had 740, and the specs on their site said 740 as well, and they just kept backpedalling and going in circles, because I don't think they understood what I was talking about. It was a minor typo, but they seemed to make a big deal about how I was supposedly clueless about how OEMs can clock their cards differently, even though I was discussing AMD reference design specs.
The Sapphire guys were nice as usual. But I'm losing hope for AMD's new SA office very quickly.

@Gldm Do you have really long hair? Think I was sitting behind you.
I have never been a fanboy of either AMD or intel, when AMD were ruling with the Athlons, I had an AMD, but now that Core2 is kicking ass, I have one of those. That said, to me it seemed that either AMD are not aware that they are in serious trouble, and they seem to be dragging ATI down with them, or the guy who was talking was just clueless. Guess only time will tell

I don't care for people that post on other forums and their opinions - if they have issue, they can email rAge staff or myself to list the problems and we'll work to resolve them.
I'm no longer considering anything you say about rAge - you've made your point, it's not your type of show and you have unrealistic expectations. There is nothing I can do about any of that, so I see no reason to worry about it.

Yes I thought that as well but why were some real and some fake? Would that not be useless if used for anti-theft purposes? For example Battlefield 2142's box was fake but Halo 3 was not, now someone would rather steal Halo amirite?

Agh, I was a Wii bit disappointed as well. My own fault I guess, last year was just so awesome for me that maybe my standards were to high too. I feel the same about the lighting, was just too light, felt too much like an outside event, almost like a flea market. But I get what you were saying about the lighting GLMD. The Wii was fun, only got to play tennis as there were just too many people wanting to give it a go. Would have loved if there were some more playable Wii titles.
BT did have 10% off their games if I'm not mistaken. Maybe some people expected more.
The big white stand with the nurses, who's stand was it? I ask because I thought that it looked horrible. It really did look cheap and like a quick after thought, kind of brought the standard for the entire event down a notch.
I loved loved loved the Halo multiplayer. Man, what fun, really awesome idea guys, should do it again. It was quite funny because in every match there would be at least one guy we seemed to have never played games before in his life which was great for pushing up you’re kill count. What I hate about events like these are the incompetent people who abuse the hardware at these events, if you get to the event at the last day, like I did, most of the stuff wouldn't work anymore.
I only got to say "Hi" to Miktar, GLMD and Kensai. The only people that I know/recognized. :(
Last year was really cool because I got my shiny new 360 a few days before the event so there was a ton of "new" stuff for me to experience. This year however was different because most of the stuff there I already owned or I've seen it before. No ones fault but I guess that's what contributed to my "slight" disappointment.
All in all I think that it was another successful RAGE, thanks guys and keep up the good work.

I thought the rAge expo was really good actually, but it was hard to make your way around the place without being squished. I'm a bit disappointed that i never got to play any of the games especially the wii ones. The LAN was great as always, that makes 3 times for me, but some of the dota players were kinda noob-a-phobic. I was playing the new quake-wars, UT2004 and Warcraft3. I wonder if any of you saw me I was sitting right by entrance 6 at the 1st table? Anyway I thought rAge was great so congratz to everyone involved ^^

I thoroughly enjoyed rAge this year, it just keeps getting bigger and better.
Highlights include
> Playing preview titles at Megarom; I mean, wow, that was awesome *cough*GH3*cough*
> Xbox 360 stand - Halo 3 and Bioshock *drool*
> Jamming away at GH2 at the NAG stand
> Having a go on the Wii (even though I've played it many times before)
> Dabbling around the game.dev stand intermittently
So, Disappointments
> I was kinda disappointed by EA's lackluster showing. Maybe it's just me? But last year, and the year before, they had really awesome stands.
> Not having enough money to go all out on a buying frenzy!
Got to chat a bit with Miktar, Dis, Nandrew, Squid and of course that vixen known as Azimuth. Also met some of the other forum people, I think I saw Edge as well as Karuji. So yeah, overall it was great! Looking forward to an even bigger event next year.

Seriously, Next year have a HUGE screen and host some killer Guitar Hero 3 (or 4 lol?) and ROCKBAND comps. Seriously, if the NAG stand was anything to go by, that would completely blow the crowds away ;)

Spent most of my time at the Game.Dev stand, so my opinion on the rest of the expo may be a bit moot. I'll be honest and say that very little actually grabbed my attention this year, but that's no fault of the expo itself. Overall, from what I saw, I thought it went really smoothly. I only just realised while reading this thread that the Dome wasn't dark this year. I kinda liked the darkness, being a nocturnal creature, but if having things brighter serves the greater good then I'll have to suffer it. ;)
Highlight of non-Game.Dev show - Watching the Azimuth vs Dislekcia Guitar Hero duel. That. Was. Incredible.

I thought it was pretty good...maybe not as good for some as last year, purely because of the huge MS/360 presence surrounding the launch of the 360.
There was probably more variety and space this time around with MS not taking up the majority of the Dome's floorspace.
Still a fair amount of new and unreleased titles to see and play.
The NAG stand seemed to be highly popular with their simple GH2 setup...drew some huge crowds considering the small size of the stand.
Watching people laying it down on expert was pretty cool.
And damn, who were those two asian guys...do they have to be that good at everything?!
I wanted to try Forza2 and PGR4 with those racing wheel setups, but found that they were constantly hogged only by people who really shouldn't be allowed behind a wheel.
The fact that they couldn't make one corner didn't seem to phase them at all...they were having a ball, crashing and spinning into everything.
The Wii was another overpopulated stand and me not being a fan of excessive queuing just to have a go, ended up missing out on that as well.
Guess this console will suffer the same fate as the PS3 with it's excessive price tag.
There was a distinct lack of any Sony/PS3 presence, not very good from SK or whoever is to blame...they're not doing much to get people to buy their console.
All in all quite an enjoyable trip.

And damn, who were those two asian guys...do they have to be that good at everything?!
Those two annoyed the crap out of us. They'd trash-talk everyone standing within earshot, then step up and either:
1. Play on Hard. Like, omg. Hard.
2. Challenge an Expert player, and play Face Off on Expert versus...Hard.
The most impressive player was that slouchy gothboy who played Thunderhorse on Expert.

I wasn't there.
No, you didn't.
But if anyone got their arse kicked at GH2 by a chick at the NAG stand (and there were rather a lot of you), you briefly bathed in my glory.
I didn't? Did you sell me a nag?
If so, well, *cough* can I have your phone number?

Nope, I wasn't one of the hotties selling mags. More specifically, I wasn't one of the hotties.

I initially thought that the Wii would tank as well, but the amount of adults (30+) that I saw buying them has made me think a little differently. For the average middle income household, under R3000 for something that "everyone can enjoy" is not that much.

Good point, has Sony given up on us? Has their ridiculous pricing cut them out of the market completely?
Yo, I know MtG had a stand as usual, but like no Vs. right? Also, uncapped yo.

I know dude, what's up with that?
Either they just don't give a **** anymore or they are just so bloody naive that they think that we will buy their over priced console whether they make an effort to promote it or not.
Highly disappointing SK.

Stop being so humble. :)
rAge was well worth going to, the 3 hours i spent going around on sunday morning were worth it as I played GH for the first time and GH 3 specifically, and it is now on the top of my buy list.
Meeting everyone (everyone i did meet, still have a bunch of people I havent met) in person was a great experience and I cant wait for the next meet-n-greet which I will go to great lengths to go to.
Things I noticed specifically:
- Pretty much no Sony presence (except a ps2 accross form the Game.Dev stand)
- Magic players have strange dressing habits...
- GH completely rocks!
I enterred a UT2K4 competition with MCI I think it was and I decided to rather drop out as I had to get to the Game.Dev stand or I would be late. It would have been fun, except it took about an hour to get it started and then rounds were pretty slow.
WIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!
The sound that I dreaded most at rAge, I have nothing against the Wii, but it made me jump everytime. :) Im glad I got in fairly early for a go on the Wii, but it's gonna take me some time to get used to how to play if I get one :P
It took me several tries just to aim the Wiimote on the "OK" box.
