I really enjoyed the show, even the bad bits, and Season 5 had been so damn awesome, but the ratings just aren't there and Heroes will be canned.

This could be bad news for "Heroes" fans. Real bad news.

Sources at NBC have told Airlock Alpha that the inevitable is finally happening: Networks executives will ask "Heroes" producers to wind the series down, according to rumors, possibly with an overall finale by May.

"There isn't much happening with this show in terms of audience, and giving it a 'final chapter' feel is something the network is considering to help allow the show to go out with a bang," said the source, who asked not to be identified.

NBC, however, has denied such conversations are taking place. "There have not been any discussions about this being the last season," according to a network spokesman.

"Heroes" began in 2006 as NBC's most buzzed show, and wowed both audiences and critics through the first season. However, Season 2 took a slow start creatively, likely not helped with the departure of producers like Bryan Fuller (who had left to run "Pushing Daisies" on ABC).

While the audience stuck it out in the beginning, that started to change by mid-season when the audience erosion began. It finished its second season with a 6.6 rating/10 share, however, second only to "Lost" among averages of overnight ratings from The Nielsen Co. for network genre shows.

However, by the 2008-09 season, "Heroes" fell to fifth among network genre shows, with a 4.7/7 average, down nearly 29 percent from the year before.

This year after seven episodes, "Heroes" is averaging a 3.6/5, more than 23 percent off from last year, and 45 percent off its pace from the second season. It's currently averaging as NBC's lowest-rated outing on Monday behind the 3.7/6 average of the now-canceled "Trauma" and the 4.4/7 of "The Jay Leno Show."

Of course, in the "Jay Leno" instance, his numbers were artificially boosted by an 11.0/18 premiere the week before the fourth season of "Heroes" started, and fell to a 3.8/6 the following week, and has hovered just above the 3.0 household rating mark ever since.

"Heroes" might not be the only one saying good-bye this season. With NBC looking for a firm finish in fourth place among all the networks once again, the new guard coming in is looking to really change things up, including possibly a completely revamped lineup that could include the reduction of hours devoted to "Jay Leno."

According to this source, "Heroes" is just not part of that mode.

"To keep a show like this going despite its numbers requires some nostalgic connection to it, and while there are a lot of people here who were part of bringing 'Heroes' to the air, they are not in the decision-making capacities," the source said.

One thing to stress, however, is that no final decision has been made yet, and likely won't be made until closer to mid-season. The source was not even clear if a wrap-up directive had been issued to "Heroes" quite yet. If it hasn't, it will.

"I don't think this should surprise anybody," the source said. "The writing has been on the wall for some time."

None of this has been confirmed by NBC quite yet, and should be treated as any rumor would.

Keep your "the show sucked" to yourself - this is a thread for Hiro fans to mourn the loss of our awesome Master of Time and Space.

I love heroes. Season 3 was the runt of the litter. I absolutely hated 3, but 5 is just so awesome so far. The carnival Master(cant remember his name) is sooooooooo cool!

Sigh....

I'm going to hope against hope that this part here...

... is worth any bearing, and that the series gets a chance...

I enjoyed all of the seasons.. In varying degrees, of course.. But I found the previous season as well as the current one to be excellent.. Yes, the writing failed at times, yes the previous season had a "lolwut?" ending... It was watchable, it was entertaining, and it was definitely a preferred viewing choice compared to similarly themed series...

To be honest I kind of expected that this season was always walking a tight rope... I can't understand exactly WHY the ratings are so bad.. Meh..

The carnival Master(cant remember his name) is sooooooooo cool!

I don't know his name either, but I call him Teabag, since that's kind of what my friends that are Prison Break fans call him..

He IS cool.. He sort of brings this enigma type of personality to the show... Not like the anti-hero Sylar kind of enigma..

I wonder how the writers will decide to script things from here on...

And a rebeelion in the carnival masters camp maybe.

But like this season and the 1st were the ones i liked so far.

Yeah, the writers strike led to a terrible second season which is really where a show builds its strongest audience. Its so sad but I guess we should be thankful that it got to 5 seasons.

We really do need forward thinkers like the Lost writers to extend a shows life-time. I'm still mourning SCC my self... that show was so damn great.

I'm not here to bash the show, as I was a HUUUUUGE fan and loved it to utter bits, but it's the -very- first show I've ever watched that infuriated me -so much- that I refused to watch it after about the second half of season 3.

But lately I've started to miss the show so a lot, and I hear it's pretty damn awesome again, so it's kinda sad that it's being cancelled, at least it did make it to 5 seasons, TSCC was the best thing I've watched in the past 5 years bar Firefly and it didn't even get a proper ending to the second season.

I think I'll buy the Heroes box sets some day, the show deserves it, and Hiro has got to be one of the best characters ever on television anyway :P

The writers said a long time ago that they were writing for five seasons, but I expected them to milk it as much as they could after watching it go down the drain and still keep viewers. It was entertaining, but it could have been sooo much better.

They had probably the best villain ever in Sylar, until he became a woman with PMS in season 2. It was sad to watch. Then instead of bringing in badass super villains, they try to finish off the company arc and then get the damn government involved. I haven't seen season 5 yet so I'll reserve judgement.

One thing I did like though is the great mythology. It's very simplified and not as confusing or as ambiguous as Lost's. Some things I've been wondering is how far ahead do Isaac's comics go, what's the meaning of the Helix, the eclipse, etc. If this season is indeed the last I hope they manage to explain some of it.

And I 110% agree about SCC, died a very premature death. I believe it won an award for the show most wanted by viewers to be picked up again. Sometimes I think the big guys on top of network television are heartless pricks.

Thank God, it should end before it loses all its appeal. I can't put my finger on why, but each season I like it less and less. I really don't care now. It's following Prison Break: end before you get too ****ing boring.

Well, I've enjoyed every moment of Heroes. Can't wait until the box set is released so I can watch it all over again :)

One question, is the current season season 5? Because I'm pretty sure it's volume 5 season 4, as season 3 had two volumes. So confusing...

Depends on who you ask, I guess..

It was season two that was split into two volumes. One before, and one after the writer's strike.

This current season, the fourth, is being called "Volume Five".. Yes it's confusing. No, I don't know why they do it that way.

This season's premiere was also a double-episode, so the next episode in the current volume was labeled "Episode 3".. Yet more confusion material..

This season has been great, but I was a little ****ed off that they kinda pulled a season 2 on us with last week's episode. Not going into detail, but I'm a little hesitant to see what the fallout will be tonight .

Yeah, I was wondering WTF everyone meant by "Season 5". Season 5 doesn't exist, the one that is currently airing is season 4 (though it is called VOLUME 5).

Also Miktar, I am not saying I hate Heroes, I love it, well loved it. But I still enjoy it and like it, it's just that it's becoming worse and worse. I am not a Heroes hater or anything, I just don't want to see one of the best shows on TV stretched out more than its natural length.

Heroes getting 5th season. (http://www.screenjunkies.com/tvnews/exclusive-heroes-will-most-likely-get-5th-season) The numbering sucks, they should get people who can count. What are we watching currently? Season 4, volume 42?
