Valve Software is a relatively young development house compared to some. It was all started in 1996 and over the last ten years we've seen a lot of history. Probably the most interesting history, however, is that of the development of the Team Fortress series. Contrary to popular belief the game dates back to before Half-Life was even released. Team Fortress as most of you know is a modification to Half-Life, however, the original was released in August 1996 as a modification to Quake. Developed by Robin Walker, John Cook and Ian Caughley, later known as the aptly named Team Fortress Software, 'Quake Team Fortress' very quickly became a popular game.

Later on in 1996, Team Fortress was released for QuakeWorld, a specially optimised version of Quake for online play only. The mod expanded and its player base grew week by week, leading to game distributors contacting the team about creating a commercial project. They soon began work on what they called Team Fortress 2 as a commercial expansion to the Quake II engine. This was when the team was contacted by Valve Software to see if they'd make Team Fortress 2 as an add on for the Half-Life engine. They were incredibly impressed by the Half-Life engine and what Valve had done and so their decision was made; Team Fortress 2 would be an add-on for Half-Life but would become Team Fortress Classic.

Soon after, Valve made the guys an offer to merge with them, quickly developing Team Fortress 2 from an add-on to a standalone project. In 1999 this project became known as Team Fortress 2: Brotherhood of Arms. This new game would change Team Fortress into a gritty realistic warfare game with a number of new innovations such as networked voice communications and a commander with a birds eye view of the battlefield.

TF2: Brotherhood of Arms looked promising until 2000 when all media just stopped aside from the occasional developer chat and rehashed previews going over year-old information. Valve refused to comment on the progress of the title and nobody knew what was going to happen with it. Had it been canned? Was it still in development? Nobody knew, all except Valve of course.

Nothing was heard for over three years until those magical early days back in 2003 where we finally heard about Half-Life 2 and the Source engine. It was finally clear why we hadn't heard anything. The game was definitely still in development but it had been made quiet to keep it secret about them developing it on a brand new engine and to keep the secret about HL2.

Another three years go by and again nothing until Summer 2006. It was at the EA Summer Showcase the new Team Fortress 2 was unveiled by Valve, a bright cartoon styled affair going back to the old Team Fortress Classic gameplay. A new release date was also announced - Summer 2007. Having been waiting for the last ten years for the actual release of Team Fortress 2 it still remains to be seen if it will ever be played by us fans.

Primary Weapon: Sticky Bomb Launcher
Secondary Weapon: Grenade Launcher
Melee Weapon: Bottle
Valve says: A versatile combat class packing an absurd amount of high explosives, the Demoman is great at holding a map's choke points. Whether he's shutting down an enemy route by laying sticky bombs along it, shelling an area with long distance grenade fire, or simply blowing up anything that blocks the team's way, the Demoman is the class of choice for anyone interested in making a lot of noise.

● 2) Engineer
Primary Weapon: Shotgun
Secondary Weapon: Pistol
Melee Weapon: Wrench
Other Weapon: Construction PDA
Valve says: The defensive backbone of any team, the Engineer builds useful devices such as sentry guns, health & ammo dispensers, and personal teleporters. Tactical placement of these devices and the ability to maintain them under fire are the keys to being a successful Engineer. If you're better at planning and thinking than fighting, you're a natural born Engineer.

● 3) Heavy
Primary Weapon: Minigun
Secondary Weapon: Shotgun
Melee Weapon: Fists
Valve says: The slowest, most powerful class, the Heavy carries a massive minigun capable of clearing roomfuls of enemies. He's vital on defense to deal with Scouts, who can easily avoid Soldiers and Demomen. If you're a player who wants to be in the thick of the action, but your aim is a little rusty, the Heavy is the perfect class for you.

● 4) Medic
Primary Weapon: Syringe Launcher
Secondary Weapon: Medi-Gun
Melee Weapon: Bonesaw
Valve says: The core support class, the Medic is invaluable on both offense and defense. When attached to an offensive squad, he's critical to keeping it alive inside the enemy base (while also boosting its offensive capability.) On defense, his ability to keep defenders healthy means they won't have to leave their posts. If you want to be loved by your entire team, or to indirectly kill a horde of enemies without firing a shot, then the Medic is just what the doctor ordered.

● 5) Pyro
Primary Weapon: Flamethrower
Secondary Weapon: Shotgun
Melee Weapon: Fire Axe
Valve says: The nastiest class to run into when turning a corner. The flamethrower produces a massive amount of damage over a short range, making the Pyro the most lethal close-quarter class there is. Pyros are often seen playing a defensive role near the front line, ambushing enemies as they enter tight spaces. On offense, they're terrific at harassing the enemy's defense, since it's hard to maintain a solid defensive line when you're on fire.

● 6) Spy
Primary Weapon: Revolver
Secondary Weapon: Disguise Kit
Melee Weapon: Butterfly Knife
Other Weapon: Sapper
Valve says: The Spy excels at the black arts of infiltration and assassination. With the ability to disguise himself to look like an enemy, or even become fully invisible on command, the Spy creates havoc behind enemy lines. He's an enemy's worst nightmare -- a dangerous foe indistinguishable from a friend. If you prefer guile to brute force, the Spy is what you're looking for.

● 7) Sniper
Primary Weapon: Sniper Rifle
Secondary Weapon: Submachine Gun
Melee Weapon: Machete
Valve says: Nobody beats the Sniper at long-range combat. With a little time to find a perch and dig in, he can significantly slow an enemy advance. If knocking the helmet off a Soldier at 400 paces sounds fun, then the Sniper is the class for you.

● 8) Soldier
Primary Weapon: Rocket Launcher
Secondary Weapon: Shotgun
Melee Weapon: Shovel
Valve says: The core of any offensive push, the Soldier comes armed with a devastating rocket launcher. Faster and slightly more fragile than the Heavy, the Soldier's a true all-arounder. From taking out Engineer sentry guns to using his rockets to launch himself into the air, the Soldier is useful in a wide variety of situations. If you're an old school deathmatcher, or just quick on your feet in the middle of combat, the Soldier's your man.

● 9) Scout
Primary Weapon: Scattergun
Secondary Weapon: Pistol
Melee Weapon: Aluminum Baseball Bat
Valve says: The fastest and lightest of all the classes, the Scout uses his speed to punch through enemy lines before opposing defenders can react. What he lacks in health and weaponry, he makes up for with his incredible speed and aerial maneuverability. If you'd like to sprint gracefully through enemy fire, look into the Scout.

● Dispensers generate metal instead of having you put metal into it.
● Critical-hit shots are chosen based on a player's momentum on the scoreboard. The shot is critical, not the hit. You can miss.
● Spawn rooms have equipment lockers to restock ammo and items. Ammo and item bags are history.
● Engineers can pick up enemy weaons to fill metal count.

With Team Fortress 2, we decided that a better approach might be to compare the stats to the players previous successes, turning them from a world-wide comparitive system into a personalized motivational one. The beginning player gets encouragement and acknowledgement, that while they are not highly skilled yet, they are getting better all the time. The veterans get to see when they have managed to come close to their previous record, which encourages them to beat that record. The personal stat system also acts as a validation system. This game is going to be ridiculously HOT! Can't wait! I belong to a group of gamers and we usually go 6 vs 6 in CoD2 HQ. We've been looking for something suitable to play(BF2,Flatout2,CStrike etc) but kind of stick to CoD the whole time. Now although CoD4 is coming in November(going to be off the hooks' hook), we are extremely excited about this Title included in the orange box.

The trailers I've seen are insane & the gameplay is astonishing. Took 'em long enough to develop, but as things look it seems the wait was worth the while. The class system is going to be VERY interesting, but the thing I like most about it(except that it's another brilliant Valve title), is the cartoon style of the game.

I LAN to get away from everyday stress etc., and this is guaranteed to give me a laugh or six...teen..

He will then give the CD-keys of HL2 and Episode 1 to his bro (very kind) and enjoy TF2.
I saw the video at RAGE and some guy sad what game is that and when I said TF2 he said 'WOW! the graphics have come along way!'

I am really looking forward to it!

Nice thing in TF2 most spams have counters, like turret spamming can get taken out quite easily. Try using a scout or a soldier's rocket launcher to distarct 'em and someone else could cap the sniper using the power of teamwork. Unless your team is also made of CS kiddies, cause then your stuffed.

I loaded it up this morning to have a look. The first thing I noticed other than the pretty graphics, was that then Demoman has no range on his grenade launcher. My grandmother could throw grenades further, underhand. I'm sure it's a balance thing, but still. I'll see how it plays. Also when grenades land in water, they just disappear. You can hear them go off, but there is no visible explosion. The graphics over all are very nicely stylised though.

Other than that I tend to have it on for tactical stuff, I prefer it to typing constantly... Somehow I manage typing in an RTS though, even though RTS feels way more frantic for me.

Started playing over the weekend. Tried all of the classes at least once, but find myself reverting to medic, as the team i'm on is almost always short on medics. Really enjoyable mp fun though.

I can't even decide on any 1 class to stay for an entire match, I'm constantly changing (but I try to go for something that isn't over saturated in the team allready).

I've played Medic a few times, I quite like it. The thing about a medic is, you're basically the putty work holding a team together at times.

People -allways- need a medic, and if used correctly a medic + Heavy or Demoman or sometimes even a soldier is pretty unstoppable.

I think my favorite class so far is still Soldier (it's the one I've clocked the most time with). I've tried being a spy once, I wasn't very good at it.

No it definitely isn't, it installed pretty fast with me.

I had pretty much lost all my backups of HL2 and EP1 (and SIn EP1 for that matter ;_; ) and so I installed all 12 Gb of the Orange box.

It only took 20 minutes, maybe less.

I personally adore playing Medic, and I love that it's an under-represented class.
I love them too. No matter which game you're playing, there's always a spot for a medic and they're always welcome.

It is rather interesting to see how many people completely write-off non-combat classes as unimportant. The way TF2 gives you score for kill-assists and class-related achievements means that, unlike many games, people playing healers are not 'scoreboard-challenged'.

A sniper that's not shooting

A demoman not raping

A spy not disguised

A slow scout in my own area

BUT, An enigineer doing nothing, I don't see a problem with that. That's why it's my favorite disguise.

If you are defending then disguising as the other team's spy isn't a bad idea. There is no point in disguising when you have to squeeze through a turreted door so the other team won't be suspicious. Pyro's always light me up when I'm disguised though, so I avoid them.

Games of this ilk tend to use between 40 and 60Mb/hour. I could be wrong, but thats what it was for Battlefield2142 which also uses VOIP. Turning off VOIP might save you some bandwidth, but isn't as fun. Not blabbering away needlessly on your mic could help your bandwidth and your reputation.

Well TF2 uses +- 60Mb if I played like 5 hours. It might be more when there is updates available.
The Ideal ping would be between 0 and 80 ms ping. anything higher than 100 will start to irritate you and the people you play with.

The servers I listed are the lowest ping locals. You go to 'Servers', right click and say 'Add IP address', either in the game or in Steam.

AFIAK playing with a high ping messes things up for the other players on the server. Which is why a lot of servers have rules that kick players pinging above 100. Incase you're wondering why people are giving you dirty looks.

well i got caped and thought well now i can play episode 2 and portal as i already updated them and evrything and then it tells me game is not availibe in offline mode but i can go into TF2 who's smart idea was it to make the SINGLE player games unavailibe in offline mode but you can go into the multiplayer?

I've played Half-Life 2, Episode One, Episode Two, and Portal offline. So there's something wonky with your Steam installation.

I've been able to play all the games in offline mode so far without major problems *touches wood*... maybe the "Don't save account credentials on this computer" box is checked? Sorry if you this is already know to you and totaly unrelated :)

However I have had a few niggles in offline mode...like I have completed all the achievements for Portal yet the Advanced Map ones (Cupcake, Fruitcake etc, which I completed while offline) show up as Unattained on my SteamID page. Any tips? Or wait for Steam to update? :D

Anyway I love the fact that everyone loves TF2..makes me feel all warm and squishy :)

Pet peeve: Played a little today, doing some grade A medicine (top spot stuff) and spy-scraping, ended up getting auto-balanced, shrugged and carried on playing.

Not 2 seconds after the autobalance, someone was bitching at me about not healing them. I informed them of the cardinal rule of medics: If someone bitches, someone doesn't get healed. He countered with a witty "Your job is to heal bitch".

Guess who didn't get healed? That's right, he got healed anyway because it helped the team :( Bleh.

Also, WTF is with people deciding to trickle into a heavily defended enemy area? You're going to die without friends!

Plus Hos are a dumbass clan: Ryuken got autobalanced onto my team just now and instead of playing he went and sat in spectator. Very dickish thing to do because it left our team at 6 vs 7. Firecat, sort out your clannies.

Why are there so many people in spectator mode in TF2? In every online game I've played, I have never seen so many spectators. Nearly every time I check the scores, I spot at least 1 or 2 people in spectator mode. WTF!?

I only started playing Saturday, it's such great fun. I class-hop all the time but it seems I'm best at playing Sniper, Pyro and Scout. I don't have a favorite though, I love playing as all the classes.

Maybe, Reflexes can only do so much though. I dunno, I've heard of ppl changing their cmd send rate in the console so to make thier uploads slower. This means they can go around corners and shoot you before they've even come around the corner on your screen. It's annoying but luckily sniper isn't the only class.

No, see they only limit their upload. They download player positions just as fast as the rest and the system makes it so that if they hit on their screen they hit. It's a hard exploit to get around.

Those arseholes at valve have done it again. My team fortress 2, and F@#king single player Portal, keep automatically reverting to Automatically Update so i get stuck with a bloody 1/2 hour download to play them again. Even after pausing the updates I can't run either until they habe completely eaten away at my recently refilled data cap. Does any one know how to keep them permanently on Do Not Automatically update, because mine keeps reverting.

No, my steam just begins by itself. I will click on the shortcut on my desktop and it will inform me that steam is updating my games. They have finished now, but it is still a pain in the data cap. does anyone know how regular the updates are?

Hey everyone, finally gave in and bought the Orange Box.

The problem is -there seems to now be an update for Steam that Steam won't download. It gets to 14% then goes back to 0% (unless it's downloading different things and that how it works).

So now that I finally have these games, Steam doesn't want to update, so I can't install, so I can't patch and therefore can't play.

Is it possible for someone to send me the updated...*Nevermind* can you believe it -Steam finally finished updating now -so begins the install/verification/update and I can finally begin playing Half-Life 2

When steam updates and you switch windows, then switch back to steam the GUI doesn't update right away so it "appears" to have gone to 0% ;)

I am beginning to see how good TF2 is.
there's a lot of adjustment from your typical MP-FPS but it grows on you.

I'm still trying to get the spy down to an point where I know what to do. I usually end up being smashed. Killed a few heavies though.

I also had problems when I installed steam, it would get to a certain point then just stop.
I just reinstalled steam and the update then went right through.

AFAIK Steam + Orange Box updates together are just short of 200mb

I got the Orange Box -so Team Fortress 2 for me is a bonus, not a requirement.

I might play TF2 when I get a better connection, but right now I'm needing help with Steam and this is the only thread that made sense to post in.

This sucks because it was working just fine before this latest update and now that I get the Orange Box there's a patch for some insignificant problem that causes hell.

Yeah, I've also got know clue on how to raocket jump, my attempts have been disastorous at best.

So far my favourite class would be pyro. I don't get a lot of kills but I can soften the enemy up for the rest of my team.

Soilder, scout and demoman are also fun but I can't seem to master heavy.

To rocket jump, point the rocketlauncher at the floor, jump, and whilst in mid flight, fire the rocket. Be sure to time accordingly to have the rocket impact at the apex of the jump.

I finally watched all those TF2 trailers NAG has had -I finally get the 'Who touched Sasha' comment. Those trailers are classic.

If you are a medic-Run around a lot while you're healing.
If you are a spy-Go invisible as soon as you stab some one then run away.
If you are a scout- Use that speed against the heavy. You can run rings around him and kill him.

My tip: Never go on you own as a pyro, always make sure you have some one like a soldier to help you out.
