Well, for those who were living under a rock at the time, a prequel to the Alien series has been announced quite a while back. Being a huge Aliens fans myself, this excites me as much as it probably excites 30 million other geeks worldwide.

Speculation as to what the movie will be about is rife on the internet. I'm not going to speculate, just sit back and wait for news to come. The biggest thing that excites me is that Ridley Scott will be directing it again. Hopefully this movie gets the series back on track after the fourth movie.

Scott returns to where it all began, as the new 'Alien' prequel finally takes off...

After thirty years of talking about it, it's finally been announced that original Alien director Ridley Scott will helm the new entry in the franchise.

Reports back in April mooted Scott for the new film, a prequel to the 1979 blockbuster, though later indications suggested that commercials director Carl Rinsch would lead the project. Fox weren't happy about that. Even though the company has done pretty well over the last three decades by choosing new or non-obvious talent to inject fresh blood into the franchise (including James Cameron, David Fincher and Jean-Pierre Jeunet), it seems the pressure for Scott to revisit xenomorph territory has combined with Hollywood's increasingly 'zero-risk' philosophy to tip the decision.

Nothing is known about the set-up of the new movie, except that chronologically it precedes the plight of the Nostromo. Since it's obviously going to involve the human race, I saw a few problems in deriving a credible plot that could predate Alien, but Hollywood has written its way past stickier obstacles than that.

Writer Jon Spaihts successfully pitched to Fox and Scott Free Productions, and is working on the script. Spaihts' other credits include Passengers and St. George and the Dragon.

Barely a fortnight seems to pass without Ridley Scott announcing a new movie - with the likes of Brave New World and The Forever War also slated or mooted for the 71 year-old director, not to mention Stones, The Kind One and Child 44, it looks like the ginseng has really kicked in.

As an added extra to my post, here is the trailer of the fan made movie, titled Aliens Epilogue, which is currently in development.

I was totally unhyped, until I read that Scott is directing. Colour me interested.

Scott was the one whom wanted it done in the first place :P

But yeah, I'm interested. Here's hoping it appeals to the older audiences, and not the American teenyboppers.

QFT.

I hope the Aliens will be presented as the true monsters that they are. Not the watered-down versions that we've seen in the recent Alien VS Predator movies. I'm glad that Ridley Scott is taking over the helm, once again.

Yeah, the original xeno from the first movie was just about unstopable. Wiped out an entire ship, yet the later movies made them seem like nothing more than a slight hindrance. I've heard people calling the dead monster from the first movie a Space Jockey. I always thought he was a Predator?

Nope, the creature skeleton you see in the first movie is the fourth race in the universe, generally named the Pilot race, or the Space Jockey. Hardly anything is known about them, there are several theories, and some of the tie in novels have taken some liberties.

One idea is that they created the Aliens, another is that the alien ship was transporting them, then crashed, another is that they "carpet bomb" planets with the eggs.

I just hope to see some smartguns, pulse rifles and flamethrowers!
Love the Alien trilogy weapons!
