That is the most win top 10 list for anything, evar. One or two exceptions but that's to be expected in any list

Wall-E! \:D/

What a fantastic movie!

Hmm...I've only watched four movies on that list. I need moar sci-fi goodness, me thinks. Would you Sci-fi buffs out there recommend the movies on this list, as required viewing?

Absolutely love that Wall-E is there. Just an stonishing film, and I maintain that the space-dance sequences is one of the most beautiful and perfect peices of cinema I've ever witnessed.

Surprised that Children of Men is on the list. I really only enjoyed it for those long single-shot sequences (the bike attack and the chase through the city near the end), and didn't care much for the story, which felt a little thin and shoved on the audience with no justification for the situation humanity finds itself in.

Also, there's a film missing that I can't quite put my finger on. Will post once I remember it.

Glad The Man From Earth is on the list. It's the embodiment of why we love sci-fi so much, and that's because it forces you to use your noggin. You'd never expect an hour-and-a-half discussion to draw you in and engross you the way this film does. Strongly recommended.
Personally I though A.I. was deserving of a place as well, but that's mainly because I'm one of the many people that didn't see Serenity :P

Glad to see Serenity and children of men there. I must admit, though, I double checked the list to see if I hadn't perhaps missed Pitch Black.

Serenity

Epically crap.
Firefly was a great show, but the movie was terrible IMO.
Bad CG and even worse story killed the movie. It’s as generic as it gets.

Serenity is my all time favorite Sci Fi flick, well perhaps tied with one or two others, I felt it was a wonderful extension of the series, Whedon managed to keep the characters and their details perfect even 3 or 4 years on, and what an amazing bunch of characters they were.

Malcolm Reynolds > all.

Cool list.

See, now here I have to think you're full of ****. Bad CG? It was by Zoic, and it looked fantastic, considering they're the BSG crew.

Bad story? You realize the story was the next season, just condenced into a movie, right, since it got cancelled?

Methinks you're not ACTUALLY a FireFly fan...

I have to agree with MarryO here. The CG in that film is pretty abysmal. It has some of the worst particle effects I've ever seen. Also, BSG doesn't have particularly good CG either, in fact a lot of it is downright terrible. It's sufficient for a TV show (it's virtually impossible to do good CG for TV due to the budgets and timeframes), but not for film. Zoic do not do good feature work.

Serenity is the one film on that list that I hated (I didn't even finish watching it - in fact, it's the only film where I've ever actually walked out of the cinema). But there are a couple of real gems in that list - I watched Moon just the other night and thought it was fantastic. The new Trek also kicked all kinds of ass, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of my favourite films ever.

Pleh. No more Nathan Fillion for either of you, ever! You don't deserve him. ;..;

Meh, he doesn't really do it for me anyway.

Fillion is a genius, and should be the lead in every Sci Fi from here on out till the ends of time, I have decreed it so.

And Summer Glau shall at the very least be his supporting actress.

Ok that's enough of my Firefly whoring, I actually haven't watched a lot of those films, but I loved Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, I had never before seen Carey play such an interesting role before, and was quite taken aback by it.

I knew it. Suddenly it all makes sense.

(And Serenity was filmed on a TV-series budget, so the fans could get the conclusion to the story. Talk about picky, people. Geeze.)

I just dusted off my serenity copy and I must say it’s still crap. I didn’t miss judge it.

Nathan Fillion is awesome. But at the end of the day he’s ****ing Nathan drake\Indiana Jones in space. He’s actually just a carbon copy (lol) of Han Solo. Yeah I said it.

CGI\makeup and some lame acting aside. The STORY is absolute fail compared to the series.

Serenity is still awesome. I would have enjoyed series revival more, but beggars can`t be choosers.

Children of Men was awesome. Such a memorable film.

Timecrimes was terrible. I mean it was a brilliant film but it was a terrible experience. I can't quite explain it, he summarized it quite nicely.

District 9 should be on there... like seriously.

And Assassins Creed 2 should get some sort of mention. Its as good a science-fiction story as any other!

Heh, it's interesting to compare these lists. io9 has its own top 20, which I'll throw here:

Pitch Black
Avatar
Slither
Star Trek
Donnie Darko
Robot Stories
Spiderman 2
Sleep Dealer
The Incredibles
The Host
28 Days Later
Paprika
Primer
Moon
Iron Man
The Dark Knight
District 9
Wall-E
Serenity
Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind

Here's the article, with justifications (particularly for why The Dark Knight is on the list)
http://io9.com/5426147/20-greatest-sf-movies-of-the-past-decade/gallery/

I don't necessarily agree with the list, but, as I said, it's interesting to compare :P

Um, what the hell is happening to hard sci-fi? If comic-book movies is on that list then I seriously don't know.

I hated Firefire (don't ask me why, don't know, just did) but thought the movie was brilliant/fun/enjoyable/witty.

Children of Men was awesome. Such a memorable film

Children of Men was a waste ot time, it may have had brilliant atmosphere and the way the war-zones/settings were so believable was great, but plot wise I was bored OR saying to myself "I get it, it's a bleak future, can we move on with the actual story now".

while the over-explained Director's Cut revealed too much and tarnished the magic of ambiguity

This might explain, why I've never liked Donnie Darko - I know the Directors Cut for Blade Runner was a waste of money and I am still looking for the original version (Where Harrison Ford apparently monologues explaining what's going on)

Minority Report was great for me, but I know many people hated it, I don't know why.

The rest I either haven't seen or think they deserve to be on the list.

Oh, where the hell is War of the Worlds? How can it not be on any of the lists?

James Donaldson

They only have 10 over the last decade and there's been hundreds of Sci-fi movies, like "I, Robot", so there's bound to be plenty deserving entires that can't make it.

Yes, but getting no recognition when Spiderman 2 is on the list :?
Okay, I'm going to rather ignore that one. I believe Rotten Tomatoes also made one, going to look for that.

Okay, let me explain it to you: IN THE LAST TEN YEARS means 1999 to 2009.

The Terminator: 1984
Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope: 1977
Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back: 1980
Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi: 1983

So, um. How the hell would Terminator and Star Wars be on that list? Unless you mean... Episodes I through III? In which case, nooo. They shouldn't be on that list. Nor should anything past Terminator 2.

James Donaldson

If it includes 1999 Iron Giant should totally be on that list :D

- I know the Directors Cut for Blade Runner was a waste of money and I am still looking for the original version (Where Harrison Ford apparently monologues explaining what's going on)

Ford actually protested at doing the voice-over. The film is far better without it. Takes away the "spoon-feeding" and allows the viewer to make their own conclusions. I just got the Final Cut a few weeks ago, which is probably the best version I've seen.

If you rate the Final cut higher than the original, that doesn't leave much hope for me when I finally see said original.

There's also a difference between being left to draw your own conclusions and not having any idea on what's happening. In the cut Ford (I forgot the characters name...), the guy we follow, has very few lines and there's almost no explanation of why he visits places or talks to certain people, which I assume would have been info given from his monologue. If it wasn't for the replicant speech at the end I would have been a lot harsher in my opinion of it.

Oh well, love the game to bits though. :D

Boggle24
21-12-2009, 06:28 PM
But what a speech that was eh ?
The atmosphere of it was perfect as well.

One of the best scenes in any film I have ever seen, I liked the movie up to that point, I fell in love with it after it.

Saw that Donnie Darko among them too. That's sweet. Wall-E also made the list which I think it deserves. But why Minority Report? It was good but I can think of other Sci-fi's better than that.

Did you read the article or just scan the names? MR was something of a pioneer. It led the Sci-Fi genre into the future.
