View Full Version : The worst bugs/glitches you have encountered in a game?

Since NAG deals with a lot of preview/alpha/beta code, games that basically aren't finished yet, we've seen our fair share of interesting bugs and glitches. One in particular that I remember was our early copy of Shadow of the Colossus for PS2 that kept glitching, causing the entire screen to go completely overbright and filled with sunlight until you couldn't see anything. That, and it would crash the moment we approached the third Colossus.

What glitches/bugs have you come across?

I don?t mind a few bugs and glitches here and there but what really strokes my karma the wrong way are those ?special? bugs that actually prevent the completion of a game you?ve ploughed hours into.
The best personal example I can think of is an old adventure game called Lighthouse... a damn fine example of everything that a good adventure game should be ? infuriating puzzles, exotic locations and general weirdness. The problem... me, not searching the drawer on the way out of the character's home right at the beginning of the game thereby not finding the lighter hidden in there that you end up needing 30 odd hours into the game with no possible way of getting back to the home. I also only found this out after hours of trying different things until giving up in frustration [wondering what I had missed] and downloading the walkthrough, scrolling to the section where I was stuck and going, ?lighter? What lighter...?

This also recently happened in Tomb Raider Anniversary. I solved the puzzle, got the golden arrow and then accidentally drowned. So I reloaded and found no arrow in my inventory or back in the water? Now I?m going to have to play through the whole mansion section again just to get back to where I started... My solution ? I?m not playing this game again until the patch comes out ? I might even wait for the second patch ? just to be safe!

I've had tons of bugs in games, including ones I'm reviewing now! I agree that quest bugs are by far the worst though.

I had this game called Gateway, based on a scifi book series. I could never get past this one point about 5 hours into the game. I tried everything, and eventually gave up. A few years later I found out that some of the copies had a bug where even though you did the right things some event wouldn't trigger and you'd get stuck. This game was on 5.25" floppies so a bit before the day of easy patches. I think I threw it out recently when I was cleaning out my room.

Another one was Black and White. There's some bug where the creature AI gets messed up on some systems. I think I had that one. No matter what I did my tiger would just not cooperate. He just went around eating rocks and toys and wandering into the enemy camp while being struck by lightning, etc. I just ignored him and tried to play through the game after a while. But eventually there was one level where you NEED your creature to help by casting spells and there was no way to do it since mine never did. Another case where I found out about the bug long after I'd given up.

I miss the old days of cool bugs like how you could jump in a certain pattern in Donkey Kong and get teleported to the top of the level.

So, liek, between you and me, Troika's Vampire game contains a bug that renders it unplayable after a certain point.

It is a fatal error that appears without fail on almost every system it's played on. That, to me, is the ultimate definition of bugfail.

How does a game ship with a problem like that?

The game's own developers didn't enjoy it enough enough to play to that point and see the bug?

Ultima 8 used to crash whenever I cast certain spells.. This too was before the times of patches, and when dial-up was the biggest thing since sliced bread..

GTA III, the under-city glitch. I remember there was an opening on one of the buildings, allowing you to slip underneath the entire city. Also, in NFS Porsche 2000, it didn't seem to like many ATI gfx cards, and would leave huge gaps of white, un-textured areas all over the place.

Glitches and bug - Fallout 2. The game was littered with them; of course for the most part they made the game funnier, but other times just plain annoying (nothing that a good patching doesn't fix)

To name just a few: The experience loop in NCR, where you can get experience for as long as you want, just as long as you keep repairing the machine that the suicide bomber damaged. Also, getting into the Vault in Vault City by going through in combat mode. The more annoying bugs and glitches involved your car splitting from its trunk - if this happened in the squat by Vault 15, you could lose your car entirely (if you come tot he surface via the ladder, the squat goes back to being all run down and manky)

Good times.

only bug I can remember was one in the expansion for morrowind, bloodmoon,
one of the raven rock missions you had to kill spriggans, I 'd killed them all but it still said I had to kill them.... went into the editor made an activateable pole that would move the quest past this point, which didnt work out so well landed up crashing the game.
my brother had a bug with morrowind that he'd keep falling through stuff, he'd jump wherever he went and on certain bridges and things he'd just go straight through.

hmm i had a bug in dark messiah that if you went into the water without a reasonably high graphics setting the water would be white. This was extremely annoying on my old computer (which had realy crappy specs)

I was playing I think version 1.0 of LOTR the Battle for middle earth 2 and at the last mission I encountered an un-killable troll who proceeded to annihilate my base, his health went to zero but he just continued on his merry way smashing me to bits.

That is an annoying bug, I died a few times with it.
(hey I'm a jumper ;))

Oh and of course some bugs(exploits) in CnC3, Engineer Teleport(fixed); Mammoth Railgun bug.

Recently while I was playing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion I entered sneak mode and the screen went totally black showing only my HUD. Now every time I enter sneak mode my screen sometimes goes black. It really irritates me.

Another was when I was 6 years old I was playing Croc or something by that name. I had gotten very far into the game and then it froze! I reset my PlayStation 1 many times, went to earlier saves and nothing helped at all! I cleaned the CD over 100 times and found out from someone that all of them have that glitch. Not cool...

Anachronox has loads of bugs, the funniest of which involved the characters' feet sticking out of the bottom of a rising lift platform in one of the early levels. The worst bug in that game was fighting the Doorlord in the Mystech tunnels. Whenever he used his special attack: instacrash. Very annoying.

This one bug in Oblvion where everytime I come close to a Will of Wisp (not sure if that's the correct name) the game would crash. Had to do some haxxoring to complete some missions.
Another bug (or several) made it impossible for me to complete* the game (Oblivion). I never had the heart to go back and reply it, so I've never really completed it.

Gears of War, the ultimate glitch fest.

From the skydiving glitch to the walking away chainsaw glitch. It renders the game quite unenjoyable at times, though these glitches only take place online. :/

I was playing PoP: T2T and i was quite far...played quite a while...didn't save...

...then i got into a battle with those dogs, and for some reason, still dunno what happened, the Prince was spinning around and round like he was break dancing.

I laughed, it was some funny stuff...but i still had to reset my machine. Then start over. :(

I see we have Anachronox it was quite buggy.

Here is a few others I had (and believe me I had my share)

- Giants: Citizen Kabato, sometimes the game bombed just when base construction started.

- Spellforce 2, had a major problem there where the game just wouldn't advance after the first mission. Had to get the patch.

- Kohan 2: Immortal sovreign, on the first misison there would be no minimap and the game will just not advance after the mission. Had to download the patch for it.

- Gothic 3 anyone? (Dare I say more).

There were more just cant remember them all.

Yeah.. Anacharous was buggy.. So was 'The Sting' demo.. I never saw that game come out.. was it because of bugs I wonder? or just SA retailers being lame... Miktar: save the day and find out!!!

Morrowind is the worst for quest bugs, that particular one is a nightmare. After consulting walkthroughs I discovered you have to kill certain Spriggans in a specific order. The ice armour isn't even worth the effort involved in completing the Solstheim quests.

Usually the construction set is the only way to solve bugs like this. Several fighters guild quests simply don't work if you're a Kahjit.

Oblivion once locked me out of the Chorrol mages guild too.

The first KOTOR had slight problems with my graphics card.
Slight problems being the geometry exploding all over the screen, with random polygons shooting out of characters and environments... It was very interesting.

In Oblivion, I went into the one building. The one where the Blades stay and stuff. In the right hand corner of the building, horse and all. Had to reset the bloody game and didn't save for some time.

The Darkness also has a clitch, won't say what it is, might be a spoiler.

Big free roaming games tend to have a few glitches.

For me, The Getaway on the PS2 stands out. For a console game, the amount of bugs was astounding.

Essential characters would sink into tarmac necessitating a push of the reset button, and sometimes characters would walk through walls - usually to arrest you. Fun times, I tell you.

Who remembers that rat that would park off underwater in the Cistern level of the original Tomb Raider? I always found that bug pretty amusing.

Yeah, wasted all the budget on graphics.

In FEAR certain events don't trigger if I quick load close to them (eg. that armoured thing breaking through the door) which means I can't continue the level.

Stalker (one of many bugs). If you are involved in a firefight and then load a save game that was created immediately prior to the fight, the NPCs would still be aiming at and aware of you before you even fire a single shot. Saving often in that game proved to be a disadvantage, try spawning and surviving with a gauss gun pointed at you.

I relate to Geometrix's pain... the same thing happened to me - and if I remember correctly, nowhere in the patch process does it say 'Oh by the way your save games are all going to not work!'

No particular game but when the mouse started to go off on its own mission, spinning around until I pressed Esc.

And I dunno if it was just me and my PC but whenever I refitted my character with weapons in Rainbow Six:Vegas the sound when all fuzzy and static until I moved away from the area,

The best bugs are when you can see your enemies feet through the door :D

Those who had Anachronox bugs, did you guys download the ex-programming team member's unsupported patches over on the Anachronox's Gamespy website? I vaguely remember some bugs, but nothing serious, awesome game otherwise (still one of my best).

The most recent bug-infested game was Jade Empire (and there is no patch!!!), OMFG, more than probably 5 times an enemy would get stuck and not attack you, therefore making it impossible to progress, very irritating. (Hint: Don't just save often in games, save in different slots too) And there was a quest which completely glitches the graphics. Then there was also the random bug where your viewpoint will suddenly be from above and nowhere near your character, also very irritating.

I encountered a doozy on the weekend playing Medieval 2.

The Tirumid faction besieged one of my cities, and when it came to fighting it out on the battle map, the game crashed every single time. It was unplayable.
Luckily there is a patch to fix it, but for a while I thought 40 hours of blood, sweat and tears had gone down the tubes...

I had a bug in Oblivion.
I fell through the the floor coverd in water onto some random plain. The animals/monsters/guards could still hit me even though I was about 20 or so meters below them. It was pretty nice to see Oblivion from the 'underground'. And it made SUPER upskirtz pictures. :)

Stalker was the buggiest, most frustrating game I ever played. A typical Russian product, made only halfway, like the basins without taps you get all over Russia. Another frustrating bug was in the second last chapter of Tomb Raider Anniversary, where you have to move a crate to expose a tunnel, but the crate wasn't there. This didnt bother me untill later in the level, when you have to use the same crate to get to a higher place...

at the moment Crysis gives me a couple of problems. But its only level 2. i save and it works fine but sometimes when i load it again (when i died or something) the map doesn't load probably and the AI is ****ed up and sometimes i cant move, or i cant interact / and use my weapons. kinda weird.

NFS Carbon had somekind of a shader problem and every object was surrounded by white ;) although i put the graphics settigs right.

Matrix Path of Neo. i could play the game but the resolution settings were unchangeable and had its default 800x600

Halo 2. it didnt create a surface object so everything droped down and down and down.

Do it with a friend and it's possible. Remember that you can do it in 2 sittings. First one to get to chapter 5. Then even if it loses your saves, you can always start from chapter 5 (because they were considerate enough to make it instantly accessible for those who played it on the 360 and just wanted to see the new levels.

Just picked up a quick fix...

It involves a bit of guessing and a bit of trial and error...
In the "Gears of War\WarGame\Checkpoints" folder, if you open any of the files with notepad you'll see reference to a "sp_*****_p" file. Now all you need to do is workout/guess where you were in game, run Gow and bring down the console using the tilde "~" key. And type in "open sp_insertmapnamehere_p". Hope it helps.

FYI :-
sp_ephyrastreets_p = Act 2 beginning
sp_factory_p = Act 3 beginning
sp_eba_p = Act 4 beginning

Meh, I love the game, but when I got to the last level, my TAC didn't work because I didn't pick the weapon up before I spoke to the Admiral (or whatever he is). Since then though, I have installed both patches and I am replying the game, slowly, enjoying every detail. I still think Crysis was underrated due to the hype.

They the guys who made Oni and Halo, they do still exsist

In Rogue Trooper, in the one Urban city mission, there's a salvage barrel down an incline that causes you to fall through the map.

Boiling Point never got it's 3rd patch, so it's king of the bug hill. Dissappearing car, falling through the map, helicopters colliding in mid-air (actually this one makes the game so much cooler),
missions/quests/story resetting...etc

Guild Wars has a glitch which is actually funny, so got left in. If you have minions, or if there's foes attacking you when a cut-scene starts, they'll continue fighting (either you or the enemy) while everyone stands around, talking and acting out the cutscene.

San Andreas, this seemed to only happen because I played so long -but I did a jump and instead of landing I went straight through the ground. Also, some cars are so fast you can out-run the rendering :)

Fallout 2. Even though kids were removed from the European game, all they really did was remove the graphics/targeting. Kids will still pickpocket you and some missions require the kids that aren't there anymore. I'm glad I Downloaded the kids patch...though seeing kids get blow to pieces, is kind of sick.

Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood. For some reason Tanks bounce around constantly -sometimes during cut/script-scenes and causing the game to get stuck.

ONI and Septerra Core -screenshots/boxart show stuff not in the game (now THAT's a glitch)

In G-Police I cannot finish the 15th or 16th mission even though I have tried it several times and have completed it as well??The cheats are useless as they prevent you from advancing in the game.... :@

NFS:Carbon randomly crashes. It happens most of the time when browsing my cars,in my garage or when I'm browsing which car to race in in the quick race section....Sometimes while driving in the game either in career or quick race the game will crash :( and some of the autoscuplt stuff doesn't show properly ie. 3 of the autosculpted tires are what they are suppose to be and the one hasn't been autosculpted and if the exhausts are autosculpted the flames do not appear when they are needed....

No mention for Hellgate: London yet? The level when you're in some generic soldier's mind (yes, this is actually in the game), if you keep running into a wall, you will eventually fall through it and respawn at the beginning of the level unscathed. I decided to use this to my advantage. Close to death? Run into a wall and reappear in safety. Uninstalled the game soon after though.

It was a great, mysterious bug that caused us who knew of it many sleepless nights.
It was in World of Wacraft and we fondly named it:

The Blight of Orgrimmar

I think it would be best to tell this story right from the beginning:
The Orc capital seemed structurally unflawed. Many hours, nay days spent frolicking in the vibrant, flourishing city gave no hint to the magic and mystery that lay below it's rugged facade.

Then one day, something happened that would change our glorious city for ever, something strange was found. It seemed that outside the great capital, behind a little farm housing boars, there was a ledge. A climbable ledge, reachable only on a mount it seemed. We assumed it to be nothing and lived in bliss in our great capital for a few weeks more.

Then, one dull day, with no raids planned and no farming to be done, an idea sprung to a friends mind. He decided to explore the recesses of that mysterious ledge. What he found changed the history of the game forever. Slowly but surely, he worked his way up ledge after ledge, forging his way, until finally he stood at the summit overlooking a bare, geographical skeleton of the great city. No buildings, just brown hills seeming to illustrate the foundations.

He jumped, landed at the bottom. Alive. He was under Orgrimmar, the city of the Orcs. He called a group of friends and revealed to us his discovery. We tried it and it was true. You could run around under Orgrimmar and it was amazing. A true discovery. Something so few had done before you. Then some useless piece of scum revealed the secret outside of our closed circle and Blizzard found out, fixed it and now there is nothing remaining of the great bug.

The Blight of Orgrimmar has been purged....

Evil Twin and Bioforge haven't worked on any of the four machines/OS's I've owned since I got into computers. With Dosbox I got Bioforges intro -then it freezes.

Arcanum, before my play CD cracked, had Running stuck as the default movement. I hate the running animation and it annoyed me that it wouldn't switch off.

Guild Wars, Factions had a Naked man hidden in one of the towns and a Pug dog can be found in the Shin Jea Monestary Arena. I'm proud to say I was the second person (after the girl ranger who found it) to find the naked man hidden in a pillar, on the bridge of Gunnars Hold.

In Guild Wars, if something goes wrong with your connection, you either lag, get kicked to the menu, or have the option is reconnect to where you last were. Sometimes, this doesn't happen.
Once, with the connection still active, the enemies stopped attacking me, I couldn't attack them -even though they kept patroling and I could walk through portals without getting load-screens. I then proceeded to rocket across the Tyrian continent (thinking it would raise my explorer title), until the game realized I wasn't where I should be and kicked me out.

Boiling point had a **** load of glitches, not to mention performance issues.
One of the more memorable glitches was the one whereby I got shot through a wall.
