I've never read many of Sir Arthur's stories revolving around Holmes, but ******* this movie is closer to the perfect book-to-movie adaption that I've seen so far (Garson, please take note of the bold words). Everything was top-notch, from the fight scenes to the way viewers get an insight into Holmes' mind. The characters were believeable and very vibrant, and I never got bored or tired of any of them (save Lord Blackwood). I can't wait to see which direction the sequel takes, and I would love to see who Professor Moriarity is and how Holmes'll outwit him.

All in all, I give it a 9/10, and highly recommend it to anyone wanting an intelligent and action-packed film. The detail that the film goes into is similar to that of The Prestige (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Prestige_%28film%29), and the depth the actors give to their characters in Sherlock Holmes is great.

Just you wait, the fight scenes are going to have you re-enacting them for weeks on end after seeing the movie.

I've been umming and aahing about this one. It looks like it could be fun, but I've become far more selective about what I go watch at the cinema, because I am tired of inconsiderate c@nts in the theatre ruining so many of the films that I go see. So I may just wait for the DVD.

Oddly enough, all the reviews I've read/heard of this have been totally polarised. It seems you either love it or absolutely hate it.

I thought it was a lot of fun, but a pretty average flick overall. Loved the way he uses his intellegence in the fight sequences.

I really liked it, it wasn't as good as I was expecting mind you, but a good film nonetheless.

Throughout the whole film I had this nagging feeling with regards to the "mystery" and how ... out of place it felt, but in the end it all fit together rather well, and I suspect the couch detectives among us were piecing it together from the get go anyway :P

I enjoyed it, but then again, I enjoy most things that aren't romantic comedies or situational comedies. Downy Jnr gives a pitch-perfect performance, and the only thing missing was Holms doing cocaine. I like how they set up the plot, and resisted the urge to go straight to Moriarty, since he was only really a villain in one book, after that his 'network' was more in play than the Dr. M himself.

The movie ain't mind-blowing, the plot ain't Sixth Sense a-ha revealing, but it was worth my time if only for the onscreen chemistry.

I wouldn't put it near The Prestige, for that was a rather one-of-a-kind movie, but it's certainly halfway there. It needed a touch more budget, I felt - often it's effects didn't cover the distance of the plot's demands.

Interesting.

I don't like genres, I like songs. I won't know if I'll like something until I listen to it, and I won't avoid something just because it sits in some arbitrary grouping that is somehow supposed to be representative of something.

Does this only apply to music, then? ;-)

Rom coms do generally tend to suck ass though. If a film has a title like "It's complicated!" or "He Said, She Said" or any other hands-on-hips-tsk-tsk-oh-you-guys relationship cliches, then I avoid them like the plague. I would, however, go watch Jimmy Carr's rom com if he ever made it:

"Boy meets girl. Classic! At first, they don't like each other. Classic! But, then end up having sex anyway. CLASSIC! It's called The Rapist."

Yes, it only applies to music, onona. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Notting Hill, and random other romantic comedies, but I rarely make a point of seeing them. Situational comedies like Superbad and such, I tend to avoid because I've noticed I rarely enjoy them. Interestingly enough, you don't see me making a POINT of telling EVERYONE on the internets, that I don't like Superbad... ;)

I seem fully capable of not seeing movies in genres I've noticed I tend not to enjoy, and then not complaning about them because they're the types of movies I tend not to enjoy. It's bizzaaaaare.

However, if it's on TV and I catch it, and I've not seen it, I'll still give it a look just to see what it's about. I don't all-out avoid something because of arbitrary groupings, if you insist on making music and movies the same thing, even though one is on average 4 minutes and the other, two hours...

Saw it last week. Wasn't expecting much, as I'm not a fan of Guy Ritchie's work, but Downrey Jr. made it quite an enjoyable romp. Jude Law felt a bit out of place though.

It was nice, the dialog (dialect?) was a bit weird for me at the start, but more importantly,
I never knew so many people enjoyed The Prestige! Definitely one of my all-time favourites!

the only thing missing was Holms doing cocaine.

With Downey JR playing Holmes, do you think that would of been a good idea? I'm just saying...

Obviously a cocaine-using Holms wouldn't really work for the PG-13 film rating.... ;P

The prestige really was my favorite film of all time, and it still sits on top of my top 10 even after I've seen other great films.

:-P Garson, you can be so damn irritating at times. Between you and MarryO, I think you both drive us a little crazy ;-)

This movie, I did like. A lot. And I've read most of the books. It's certainly a closer to them than all the stuff with Holmes wearing a deerstalker and Watson being a fat buffon.

Obviously, it was not totally like the books. It couldn't have been, because what makes a good movie is not the same as what makes a good book. A film of the first Holmes story, A Study In Scarlet, really wouldn't work, IMO.

Also, the ending was excellent. Given how much stuff I've seen does the opposite, it was really quite refreshing.

I've the books quite a while back, I went into the movie with no expectations (I tend to do that quite often nowadays) and I was pleasantly surprised. I really think Sherlock was awesome. Watson - not really the Watson I was expecting,.

On the whole A very good movie, worth the time taken to go watch it.

Off topic: I concur! The Prestige is an amazing movie! It's one of my all-time favourites!
