If I had to pick:
Dawn of the Dead (remake)
Transformers
Die Hard 4
Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events
Ultraviolet

Ultraviolet? <snicker>. Well, that's proof that taste is relative, I guess.
Night at the Museum. Went expecting nothing much at all, got one of the best comedies I've seen in a long, long while.

Hey, it had neat tech, effects and Milla Jonovich. I guess I'm easily amused.

My bad. :)
Chronicals of narnia: loin, which and the cupboard
I'm never one to point out spelling and bad grammar but that's bloody funny.
@Miktar: Hey, I also loved that movie.
Ditto on all those mentioned, enjoyed all of them.
Some chick flieks that I stood against watching but were actually really good:
Music and lyrics
The sisterhood of the traveling pants
She's the man
The lake house
And some more that I can't recall at the moment.
And if you laugh at me for watching these, I'll pound you into the ground m'kay.
Sorry wir beat me to it.:(

I strangely enough enoyed Lady of the lake (or somesuch), and I wasn't expecting too. M. Knight hadn't really produced since unbreakable.
And if you look at what Chevron quoted, I Made a typo too.
I fixed it too late.
Heh, I was sceptical about Silence of the Lambs untill I saw it.
Now I'm watching everything with Hannibal Lector :P
Going onto Red Dragon Now.

I did it on purpose. It's lion not loin, witch not which and wardrobe not cupboard.
but anyway...

I try not to expect anything out of movies, but I always expect romantic comedies to make me throw up.
Ones that didn't; Love Actually, About a Boy and Intolerable Cruelty. So two British comedies and a Coen brothers flick.

Lady in the Water was a pleasant surprise. I enjoyed Signs and The Village much more than Unbreakable though.

For some odd reason, I have a soft spot for romantic comedies, so I never really expect any suprises out of them.
Anyway, movies I expected to be crap, but actually enjoyed:
Saw (not 2 or 3 - they were crap).
Apocalypto (Mel Gibson suprised me with this one).
Land of the Dead (I just didn't think Romero had it in him, I sure was wrong).
Pitch Black (Vin's cool voice/dodgy acting combo aside, this film was like the movie adaptation of cheese and Marmite on toast).

Equilibrium, from the same Kurt Whasisurname who did Ultraviolet. It was packed with plot holes and inconsistencies, but I loved it anyway - Gun Kata is just way too cool.
Paycheck with Ben Affleck was also surprisingly entertaining, although I wish I knew why every casting department in Hollywood tries to perpetuate the myth that Uma Thurman is good looking... Fun movie, at least.

I loved it!!
@ ironwolf: Ok, I get it now.;)
@ Gazza N: Equilibrium is made of win and then some more.
The fast and the furious: Tokyo drift. Ended up being the best of the lot for me.
Pitch blacks sequal (just can't remember its name). Another one of my favorite films, this one really surprised me.
Mr Bean's holiday...got dragged to see it but was really funny

The Upside Of Anger. I usually loathe any film which stars Kevin Costner, but The Upside Of Anger was actually pretty good (surprisingly).

I was actually disappointed with chronicals of riddick. It felt like a tacked on sequel with absolutely nothing to do with pitch black.
It was a good action flick, but not really a good follow up.

On the Pitch Black sequel subject, was it not The Chronicles of Riddick?
The Matrix.
A bit of explanation here:
In 1999 before the movie opened it was virtually unknown. The TV ads for it were terrible, and mostly kept focusing on the one bullet-time scene on the roof and the mysterious "What is the Matrix?" campaign. They were plastered everywhere and after his previous roles in Johnny Mnemonic and such Keanu wasn't exactly an encouraging name to hear at the front of a movie's credits.
Basically it looked like another one of those "Wow we have a new special effect to play with, let's make a cheap movie around it!" type films. Not all of these types of movies have been crap, the most notorious example being Back to the Future, which was entirely made just to test out new special effects toys and by coincidence turned into an awesome movie.
Anyway, I'd spent the day with my (now ex) b/f and some friends out in California, we'd gone from SF where I was at school over to the east bay to visit some friends, and after a day of watching Neon Genesis Evangelion until we were sick and BSing about random crap, the debate had raged for hours over what to do next. So after hours of arguing over what to do, what movie to see, whether to just go home etc, We went out to see Matrix at 9:30pm on opening night at a then state of the art theater.
None of us really had a clue what the movie was about because the ads were being all mysterious and in general lame. We were a bit annoyed at the line but it was opening night and so we kinda just stood around talking a bit. They announced the movie would start late for some reason, so we ran over to get food since we'd kinda skipped dinner and were starving. Then they suddenly changed their mind, and I had to smuggle three McD's extra value meals and some icecream in my coat into the theater (anyone who's seen my winter coat knows this is possible).
Well Matrix being Matrix was lots of fun on opening night when you have no idea what the movie is about since nobody's told anyone yet and you're expecting a halfassed movie.

Chicken Little and The Barnyard. I can't remember the last time I actually watched a 'live' movie anyway (But Pirates of the Caribbean aught to be on DVD soon. Yay!). Anyway, Chicken Little looked like complete crap but it was hilarious and I wouldn't even have wasted my time watching the barnyard but the pretty video-store girl recommended it (=P) and it was great, not the best, but still great.
