Today I have come across "Gojira","Dream Theatre" and "Sylosis".

I have never heard their music before but now I'm completely hooked!

The reason I started this thread, was because I want to delve deeper into these genres of music.I want to go out of my comfort zone and open up to bands that I've never heard of before.

Gojira is ****ing awesome. I hate Dream Theatre though, and I haven't heard enough Sylosis to have an opinion. They're playing at a gig I might go to next month though, so if I go, maybe I'll have an opinion on them.

I've recently gotten heavily into Amon Amarth. They're simply fantastic.

I've also gotten really into Mastodon over the past year, as well as The Sword. But I am sure many people here are already familiar with both bands.

By the way, a really great way to discover new bands is to sign up to LastFM.com and scrobble the music you listen to. It then suggests bands you like, or, alternatively, you can go to the pages of bands you like on the site, and you'll find suggestions of similar bands. I've discovered quite a few bands through the site, and it's also a great site to keep track of upcoming gigs (if you're not in SA, that is).

Well, after listening to the Razor 198 CD that came with HMH , I find myself oddly intoxicated by the song Flag in the ground by Sonata Artica. I really want to hear more form this band. Your thoughts?

Agalloch is a really sick band that was recommended to me by a friend. It evokes very strong emotion without saying anything.

I also just got into Avenged Sevenfold. Now i understand why everybody was so sad about the death of the Rev. City of evil is one of those albums you can just listen to over and over again.

and finally, Five Finger Death Punch have caught my interest after watching some videos from Last year's Download Fest. I really enjoyed motograter's vocal style so i think the R400 for the album might just be worth it.

The only power metal band worth listening to, as far as I am concerned, is the almighty Blind Guardian. Take a listen to them and you'll realise how sh!t, by comparison, bands like Sonata Arctica are.

Agreed completely. BG make bands like Nightwish and Sonata Arctica look like amateurs, really.

Awesome! You can definitely get Blind Guardian albums in SA - I bought most of their back catalogue when I was much, much younger in Cape Town. Definitely try to get your claws on Nightfall in Middle Earth (undoubtedly their best), A Night at the Opera and A Twist in the Myth. Three fantastic albums. Their best song ever is Nightfall - if any song will make you fall in love with this band, it's this one. They also have a very cool DVD called Imaginations through the Looking Glass, but you may have trouble locating a copy of it - it took me a while to track it down here in the UK, but it's really worth getting. Having said that, you can find a lot of the stuff from it on youtube. Here's one of the best clips:

I'd also recommend Imaginations From the Other Side, actually. I'm about just as fond of that one as I am of Nightfall in Middle Earth. It's enough that it has The Script for My Requiem and Another Holy War on it. ;)

But yes, onona's advice is solid. Listen.

To be fair, those three bands are all very different styles. Just because they aren't to your taste doesn't make them rubbish.

I dont really know any of the bands that you guys mentioned but I do like Chimaira, Avenged Sevenfold, Atreyu, DragonForce, Otep, Bullet For My Valentine, Killswitch Engaged, Slayer, Cradle Of Filth, Mudvayne, Deathstars, DevilDriver, Demon Hunter, Soilwork, Hatebreed, Fear Factory, Soulfly, Dark Lunacy and many more. I honestly, sincerely think they're the worst band in existence. I genuinely cannot fathom how anyone can actually like them.

Um...they're really and truelly not that bad.

They're guitar and drum work are fast (as are many bands', I know), but I heard they're guitarist is the fastest in the world (I know that doesnt mean he's the best, he's just fast).

You know, I never liked them either, I dont like the lead singers voice, but after hearing Through The Fire And Flames from Guitar Hero III, I have a new found respect for them.

Dragonforce has no soul. Same problem as (the far more incredible, but equally lame) Dream Theatre.

I'm loving Asking Alexandria at the moment, as well as Antagonist.

Oh, and written some new stuff for my band (My Life On Fire) which is killing at the moment.

I totally agree. Dragonforce lack the passion that other bands put into their music. They are defiantly not music you can listen to over and over again.

And Linky for MLoF please :)

Those are live recordings. Re-recording After Hope in a new studio next week, and will post a link when all the mastering is done.

Set-list is almost ready to start gigging. 2 new songs (Idle Silence and The Stirring) need to be polished a little more, and we should be on the road shortly after.

Thanks for the interest.

(ps old distortion was through a badly set GT8, moved back to an ME5 for the new stuff)

I don't know who has listened to them or if they're long in the business, but I've recently come across Pain. I heard one of their songs on the radio, The same old song, and decided to check them out. Now they are one of my favorites.

Also discovered Guano Apes, meh!
