Total US hardware sales January - June

DS: 2.7 million
Wii: 2.1million
Xbox 360: 1.3 million
PSP: 1.3 million
PS3: 763k

As you can see, Nintendo is currently cutting the competition to shreds with staggering sales for both Wii and DS, while PS3 numbers look decidedly unhealthy in comparison. The runaway popularity of Nintendo's machines is also reflected in the chart released by NPD showing the ten biggest selling games in the US for the year to date, with the Mario-maker occupying six slots. PS2 and 360 both have two games in the list, which means no show for any PS3 titles. Here's the complete rundown:

Top ten games January - June 07
01 - Pokemon Diamond (DS)
02 - Wii Play w/ Remote (Wii)
03 - Pokemon Pearl (DS)
04 - God of War II (PS2)
05 - Guitar Hero 2 w/ Guitar (PS2)
06 - Guitar Hero 2 w/ Guitar (360)
07 - Mario Party 8 (Wii)
08 - Crackdown (360)
09 - Diddy Kong Racing (DS)
10 - Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess (Wii)

What? PSP 1.3 million, wow!!!! Guess I'm the only one that dislikes it.

Jislaaikit, Nintendo sure is covering lots of ground here. Talk about a come back. Just wish that we were part of it.

I'm not a PSP fan at all. had 2 (for me and the Mrs) got rid of both and invested in a DS for each of us. The big problem we have had at our tournaments is that 90% of PSP titles aren't share titles and 90% of DS titles are which means not everyone has to have the same game to play. It actually makes a huge difference.

Blame the way that the PSP is designed... It's not a wonderful idea trying to stream data over an entirely separate connection protocol than the normal gameplay info, especially when it's notoriously unreliable. Everyone tries to do it with PSP titles, but it's the first feature to get dropped, usually publishers are happy about it too: They don't seem to realise that share-play doesn't harm sales, it actually grows them.

You know, virtually 100% of PC games aren't share titles either. I don't see that being a hindrance in the multiplayer community.

I beg to differ.

Counter Strike, Quake 3, Unreal Tournament, Starcraft, Warcraft II, Diablo.

All of those were "share" titles - the first lot because they had no CD-checking after the first patch or right out of release, and the last three because they had Network Spawn.

But these days, publishers are rather greedy.

And what does that mean?

Battlefield 2, 2142 and other games that have "unbreakable" protection (ie, CD Key linked to persistance elements) are only a shadow of what they could be in terms of MP popularity.

Probably because part of PC multiplayer communities is browsing other peoples hard drives over a LAN to copy games, music and movies.
