I'll be putting it on the NAG DVD for Sept, but check it out at the site if you can:

Do you think it's CG just for the sake of CG?

I've been following this on aintitcool. The cg...I don't know. If he's going for the larger than life, the exaggerated reality, the fantasy-esq tone, then by all means, but the type of cg he's using, he's been trying to perfect since that Christmas train movie (Polar express?), and quite honestly, there are elements of plastic that put me off.

I am not sure I want to see a movie about a man who slaughters dragons :(

But I agree with Brazed, the artwork is still abit plastic like

Grendel isn't a dragon.

As for the movie itself, I simply don't see the point in creating a photorealistic CG movie. The point of VFX, to my mind, is to be able to create scenes and imagery not otherwise practical to create using live action.

If they really wanted to make an all-CG fantasy film, they should've taken better advantage of the possibilities offered by cutting-edge VFX, and gone for a Frank Frazetta look or something.

Grendel isn't a dragon.

Correct, my dear Azimuth, but Beowulf's last battle [the third one] was against a dragon: Beowulf's Third battle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beowulf#Third_battle:_The_dragon)
A battle that was completely uncalled for considering it was the human's fault...

But I am sure that they will focus on Beowulf's fight against Grendel and not the final one ;)

I am a fan of CG movies, considering the time taken to create them, I just hope that they are making it CG for the sake of being CG

Beowulf is an Old English heroic epic poem composed around 1100 AD. At 3,183 lines, the poem is notable for its length. The poem is untitled in the manuscript, but has been known as Beowulf since the early 19th century. As the single major surviving work of Anglo-Saxon heroic poetry, the work — in spite of dealing primarily with Scandinavian matters — has risen to such prominence that it has become "England's national epic."[1]

In the poem, Beowulf, a hero of the Geats, battles three antagonists: Grendel, who is destroying Heorot and its inhabitants in Denmark, Grendel's mother, and later in life (after he is King) a dragon. He is mortally wounded in the final battle, and after his death is buried in a barrow by his retainers.

It does look rather plastic... especially the human models. In fact I'd say they look less realistic than polar express did. :s
