A article (http://www.gaminginc.co.za/?q=node/617) By Stephen White

It’s roughly three weeks to the first major LAN event of the year for the local CoD4 community. The tournament is being hosted by Real Gaming, a new company who have just finished hosting a StarCraft II event.

At the time of writing this article, there were only six teams entered into the competition which, quite frankly, is not enough to ensure their continued support of our community. The fact of the matter is that there are hundreds of DGL CoD4 players in Joburg and Durban, yet we can’t get ten teams together to support this event.

I’ve been racking my brain to try think of good reasons why people just aren’t willing to attend and the answer I’ve finally settled on is that gamers don’t think the effort and cost is worth the experience. Before there are any complaints, I do realize that some people simply cannot attend due to holidays, financial commitments e.t.c. Anyway, I decided to share my first LAN experience in the hope of motivating some of you to attend this event. I will also share a tip on mix teams and explain why this event is going to be more than your average LAN.

My first competitive LAN experience was at FRAG LAN in Durban, where a mix team of Kelynt, Numb, Dax, Solidarity and I were the main competition to the powerhouse that was First in Battle. I had played a couple pickups at this stage but had never played competitively at a LAN before and was quite nervous for this reason. I’d seen players like PoOks, Craolia and Evax dropping bombs online on sabotage mp_pipeline and tdm mp_bog and so it was somewhat intimidating to have to play against them.

I can’t remember much of the tournament except for the final between our two teams, which was an experience I will never forget. The match was played over two maps and had everything that makes a LAN final awesome. Crazy clutches, epic comebacks and of course those nerve-wrecking 1v1 rounds where all of a sudden everything quiets down and you can feel your heart beating out of your chest. Although we did manage to give them a bit of a scare, FiB did end up shutting us down and winning the event. Anyway my strongest memory of this event is the moment of clarity I had when accepting my second place prize of an Aopen watch. I thought to myself: “Stephen, this was a ridiculous amount of fun. You need to do this again”. I might have also thought “this prize is sh*t”.

And that was it, I was hooked, I went home after that event and started playing more seriously in order to get into better teams.

What I tried to show with this story is that attending a LAN is not about the prizes or the venue; it’s about the thrill of competing – pure and simple. Win or lose, you go for the experience of the event and you might even end up winning some prizes and making some new friends.

I should also add that this event is shaping up to be quite special compared to the local monthly LAN’s. Having spoken to the team at Real Gaming, I am seriously impressed with their attitude and commitment. They seem to genuinely care about growing the gaming scene in this country and are not running this event to make a quick buck, as some people have suggested. They have a long-term plan to make competitive gaming more professional and if we want to see CoD4, the game we love, in these plans then we need to show them as a community that we mean business.

There have been some complaints that the entry fee of R250 per person is a bit steep, which it is as it’s about R100 more than you pay for your average OC or FRAG. The question you have to ask yourself is, am I getting what I’m paying for? RG LAN has a clean, professional venue, a stable network, a knowledgeable admin team, prizes down to fourth place for two divisions, proper shoutcasting and of course it spans over three days. They will even have a proper spectator area so that your family and friends can come see what it’s all about. All the ingredients for a successful LAN, just add teams.

If you think about it, most of the people reading this article will have spent hundreds if not thousands of hours playing one single game, Call of Duty 4. If you acknowledge how much time you have actually invested into this activity, then R250 begins to seem like not all that much. A LAN is the culmination of months and years of energy invested, like going to Comic-Con if you love comics or an all you can eat restaurant if you’re Cranky.

If anything I’ve written here has appealed to you and you aren’t in a team yet then I urge you to make a plan to attend this event right now. If you can’t get your full team then get subs, or if you’re by yourself then get a mix team. The one tip I can give to people who don’t have a team is to take responsibility. I have seen quite a few people saying “looking for a team”, enough to probably fill a few teams. Put your hand up and make yourself a captain of a mix team and try to recruit players one by one. It’ll be worth it.

See you at the LAN.
