Molyneux had privately hinted to Kikizo recently that he thought all fighting games were flawed because hardly anyone knows how to play them, and told us he'd come up with something better. We wanted to know more. "Stupidly, the ambition on this thing is I want you to measure this against any fighting game," he told Kikizo in an exclusive chat. "It's amazing for a role playing game, because most role playing games are ****! Oblivion was a great game, but the combat was rubbish; we all talked about it being rubbish. So imagine you had a great role-playing game and really, really good combat system."
Molyneux - the only game designer who knows so much about designing games, after not really having designed a game in 8 years... x.x

Molyneux would know, I guess. He's developed so many RPG games.
Wait...

Molyneux, as was mentioned in the Game Developer Allstar in NAG a while back, has been nothing but a figurehead since Bullfrog ceased to give gamers a reason to live. :/ He's a bit like Miyamoto in the sense that what he does these days, is tell people what he thinks would make a great game, and then the people go and make it a reality. The difference is, Miyamoto knows what he's doing.
I think Molyneux lost touch with gaming quite some time ago, round about the time of Black and White (which I love, btw - it was just a horrible game).

Molyneux's interviews are the shizniz. I almost want to nuke myself some popcorn or something before watching them.

Its a comedy, more than anything else. That fable 2 vid... He comes across as really daft.

Wow. No love lost for the Neux round here, huh? :P I guess everyone is still bitter about Dungeon Keeper 3 and Syndicate Wars 2...

Yeah, that one interview vid of him hyping Fable2 was quite an odd experience to watch.

You know, he may be past him peak, but he isn't exactly wrong either. Combat in Oblivion is pants.

As compared to... Fable? Which was equally pants?

Never played Fable. So I can't comment on that.
I still like proper Role-play combat like BG and Icewind Dale. That's one of the reasons I'm looking forward to Fallout 3 with the VATS system. Should be similar/ish.

Meh, thing is, I dont classify Oblivion as 'most CRPG's'.
I certainly don't believe most CRPG's should cater to twitch-gamers. Some of us stats whores are just fine with with a simple interface, preferring to focus on the character building and story elements(and boy, did Fable get those right*). In fact, "MEH" to realtime, pixel-accuracy and 12-yr-old reaction-required CRPG gaming. That's not the point of CRPG's.

well iv played Fable and Oblivion, on PC.I preferd Fable alot compared to the FP hack n' slash aproch oblivion tryed.and its not becouse Fable was easyer, it is quit hard in Fable to complete the entire Arena without a scrach. but i did love the exploration thing in the Eldars scrolls series.
well.... most RPG's are ****... (no offence)
even my favorite RPG diablo was ****ty (but not as ****ty as other)
the thing is... that until there is virtual reality machine plug in for pc, then rpg's will only be some hack and slash (and fire ball) game.
but some may have been on the line between crappy and ok.... like maybe.... diablo... or wow(not really).

Oh, shut up, Awsomemic. You've no idea what you're talking about. Come back and make an informed post once you've played Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Fallout 1 and 2, Arcanum, Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2, Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader, Divine Divinity, Beyond Divinity, and Planescape: Torment.

Fable was a great RPG -it failed in not being what was promised...and short.
I lost my save games before finishing Throne of Bhaal (after BG1, TotSC, BG2) and decided to start again...from Baldurs Gate one.
ANYWAY...That vid, really made him look like a nutter.

man Awesomemic, god forbid you ever try a proper role-playing game. One that uses pen and paper and imagination.
You clearly have no concept of what role-play is.

Azimuth has just been elated to a lvl 99 RPG goddess.
I have to agree with her. Until you have played at least half of those games, you don't really know what an RPG is. Also, go back to reading AD&D for a true RPG experience. Play a proper RPG game with pen and paper. Wake up please.

Lionheart was goofy. But Planescape... zomg. I still mourn the fact I never completed it due to picking it up too late. Curse my penchant for fansy grafix!

Have you been huffing glue? Lionheart was rad. It might as well have been called Fallout 3: The Renaissance Years. Ok, the scope wasn't quite Fallout's, but the game mechanic was identical, and it had oodles of style.
i really enjoy rpg -icewinddale 1+2,baldursgate 1+2,neverwinternights 1+2,diablo 1+2 plus others . I guess some gamers stick just to one kind of game ie FPS and thats it i dont like sports games but that doesn't mean that they no good:)

Well, I'm not strictly saying that I thought it was bad, per se. I also didn't get Arcanum, I suspect for much the same reason. Very niche crpg's. I prefer ye olde high-fantasy and traditional-scifi crpg's. Steampunk (or whatever the heck Lionheart was) has never really been my thing.

Dude you just cant say Fallout is anything like Lionheart,Lionheart is crap.
And Fallout is way up there with the best Rather compare Arcanum or BG to Fallout.

*sigh*
I am on the fence with Lionheart. I finished the game, which I think means that it's not crap. The SPECIAL system was awesome BUT, it was flawed at times. For one, the balancing wasn't always kosher. At one point you're runnign and slashing willy-nilly, the next moment the game would absolutely murder you. Guess that depended on your character as well, though.
What I like was the world and the variety/alternatives that pop up, especially in the beginning. When it comes to choices and alternative story lines, the first part of Lionheart (up to the point where you go on the main quest) is awesome. You can replay it 3 or 4 times and still find some or other route. I know this, because I've done this several times.
It just felt like when it came to the last 2/3 of the game it fell flat in the variety department. Suddenly you're being sent from one area to the next to the one after that. As if the developers ran out of time and instead of trying to work out a complex multi-branch path to the end, they just quit and threw in a A to B ending.
The Unarmed skill was also crap and I <3 my Unarmed.
I find Molyneux comments a bit rich though, especially seeing as he hasn't produced anything of worth lately. His previous games are also lauded by just the hard-core fans.

[lesser derail]
My twin sister and I are both gamers. I think the appeal of gaming has little to nothing to do with title theme / content, and everything to do with socialisation. When I was a kiddie, my parents weren't hung up on what was "gender appropriate", and I was allowed to play with whatever took my fancy. I had dollies and Thundercats and Lego. There isn't really anything inherently masculine about gaming - that's a silly misconception imposed by a society obsessed with gender. Pfft.
