Free with no hectic accounts and quality? Guild Wars.

1. WoW is not overpriced, it costs as much as 3 movie tickets per month for unlimited play.
2. Don't judge it by the South Park episode, it was funny, but not an accurate representation.
3. Play WoW

If you really can't afford the membership fee, play Guild Wars. Best no-monthly-fee MMO available.

Ill go with Guild wars without sparking a war here, Guild wars is almost better that WoW, with the exception of the new content.

Basically anything you find great, someone else will say sucks. So let me put it here:

WoW: Not as much depth as some other MMO's, but the biggest and it is addictive, a nice setting that doesn't take itself seriously. Has cartoony graphics and can run on 5 year old PC's. Needs a monthly subscription.

Cons: A lot of the community can be immature, and a lot of people can find the game a little repetitive after a while. But YMMV(You mileage may vary.)

Guild Wars: Free to play past the original box price, a high quality MMO with a story attached. Level cap is 20, but thats where the game really begins, as its far more about strategy and player skill than items and levels here. Pvp can also be accesed at any time.

Cons: The end game stuff after you've finished the story in any of the campaigns is repetitive, and in Eye of the North, rep grinding. Community can be slightly elitist in certain places.

Lord of the Rings: Similar to WoW, but different enough *not* to be a WoW clone. Highly atmospheric and true to Tolkien, leveling is just right and done mostly with quests and very little grinding. Monthly Subscibtion.

Cons: Needs a really nice PC to display what the game should look like, and for some it is just too much like WoW. Note: Armour looks realistic(May be a pro for some, con for others)

Everquest 2: Mature community, Level up to 80, level progression is just right. This is a game where you don't want to level too fast, as there is just so much to see and do. Deeper than WoW, especially in crafting. Areas are *huge*. Monthly Subscribtion.

Cons: This is definitely not a game for everyone, there are about 20 different races, and the same amount of classes, factions are divided into Good and Evil, and PvP servers are Hardcore with a capital H. People can loot your corpse Hardcore. PvE game for the most part. Also needs a really good computer to run smoothly, but graphics are great.

I've played all of these, and currently am playing EQ2 and LOTRO. I enjoyed them all, but must say that I found WoW the most boring. (Note: I found it boring, but others really enjoy it obviously. Really, when playing an MMO, you should choose the one that keeps your attention the longest)

Get the trials decide for yourself. Neither one sucks, some are stronger in some areas than other and have different features. It just depends on what you want.

Peoples opinions vary so much the best thing you can do is find a game your mates play and join them with a trial account.

Unfortunately some games only really show their awesomeness when you hit max level (WoW and GW are good examples of this) so it can be difficult to judge.
For games like that I'd recommend watching a mate with a max level char playing. Preferably doing some of the more desired high end activities (e.g. Raiding in Wow)

In the end no one can really tell you which is better.

Your best bet is to head to www.mmorpg.com and check through the Free / Micropayment lists and check out what's there. You're gonna have to find something that matches your playstyle and wallet.

There really aren't many *bad* mmorpg's out there. They all have their pros and cons. Boils down to personal preference, the best thing really is to get free trials where you can.

Was reading Blizz is working on a 'streaming' trial of WoW so that they could have people up and running in a matter of minutes. Gotta hand it to Blizz, they sure do know how to pimp their particular brand of e-crack effectively.
