I play games because they are fun. And I love the stories of the great rpg games.

Seconded. Though I also love reading, and there are some other reasons which are slightly more personal and a little strange ;)

I play games for the same reason I watch movies: Because the real world sucks.

I think its also to live out people's 'fantasies' a little.
To do things that they would not get a chance to do in real life.
Like blow bad guys heads off, or be the ultimate control freak and control people the way you want to.

After having a LAN with my friends I get the feeling of actually being really good at something. Oh and fun as well.

Sometimes life can be a tad hectic and one needs to escape from the real world. Instead of running around shooting people in the street, I'd rather do it to virtual enemies. I also can't exactly take a Porche and drive at breakneck speeds down the N1, there I can. That's the beauty of games.

Its fun to wach movies but to me I didn't just want to wacth guys shoting I wanted to shoot too. So thats where games come in, you star in your own movie... and it creates a world of wonder where to you can escape from the real worlds problems.
But then ive got another question for everyone, how is it that games can take things that are so horrible in the real world, like war for example, and make it so that we enjoy it?!
Like ive seen old men tell their gruesome war stories of the second world war on the history channel, and I see them cry for their dead friends that died horrible deaths on a battlefield... And right after I go play Call of duty 2, cos I love it! war in games rock! but never in my life do I want to be in a real one.

Because games are not real.

Because games are not real.
I loled. I did.
Anyway, I play them for entertainment. Games are fun. Simple.
because I'm a socialist/nationalist who believes that capitalism is fatly flawed and because I want to get away from the the world that I have no real power in... and to kick my friends asses in halo and BFV

I play it for escapism (mostly). Thats why MMO's do it for me. And the popular mulitplayer games is great for some friendly competition.

Shame we all have such depressing lives, its not right. hey i guess there not much we can really do to change the sad fact that our lives suck.im pretty sure that everyone plays games for escapism , when you have fun you have to forget about all the sh*t in your life, other wise fun would not be fun, thus fun is a form of escapism. if we lived in a world like a video game i would not play video games because there would be more important stuff to do like train or save people lives.
but if you think about it the real world is like a video game in that there is allot wrong with it.so maybe it is time for us to try make a difference, not a big difference, just help people, in the most simple of ways like now in winter give some poor hobo a spare blanket or something but we need to stop being so selfing and hiding away in our Games and act like the hero you always dreamed of being when you where little
.... just a thought.

I game because everything in life that isn't work is essentially a game.
The electronic variety is simply mine, and yours', favoured flavour.

I dont want "Escapism" to get away from life and its badness. I just like escapism as a pure thing. :)

Forget escapism. I play games because they provide mental stimulation along with the entertainment, as opposed to more passive forms of entertainment . Not that I dislike movies, books, etc, and not that they can't be stimulating, but I find the interactivity and puzzle-solving aspects of games make for a generally richer experience.
"Compation"?

I can't say to take up time...cuz I have loads else to do.
I can't say its really for fun....cuz I play games where I really dont feal like its fun..
I can't say escapism....there much better escapisms out there.
I can't say compition...cuz Im not really competitive....
I would say cuz as long as I've know I've been gaming...and to some extent I enjoy it. And if I where to stop playing games there would a big gap in my life...so I just kinda feal compelled to play games and get excited about new ones. Now let have SPORE and FABLE 2!
I don't really play games alone... it just feels so sad. I also don't play games over the internet cause it feels so unpersonal (is there a word like that even?). So basicly the only time I play games is when I'm at a LAN... And then I'm not all that good... so I quess I play it for fun. Then again I used to love playing old school adventure games, for the mental challenge, bit theres not many of them left any more that I havent finished.
