(This is an old post, I figured I'd re-post for posterity)
Scions of Fate
Operator: Beijing 17game Network
Web: http://fate.netgame.com/
Model: Virtual Asset Purchase
Scions of Fate, also known as YulGang, is a Korean MMORPG which boasts 9 million registered players and a peak of 215,000 concurrent online users, although some sources report a peak of 600,000 concurrent online users (not single-shard, but across all shards).
The Legend of Mir 3
Operator: Wemade Ent
Web: http://www.legendofmir.net
Model: Pay-to-play
Mir 3 holds the Guinness world record for simultaneous players, roughly 750,000 concurrent, across shards.
Lineage II
Operator: NCSoft
Web: http://www.lineage2.com
Model: Pay-to-play
NCSoft claims that Lineage 2 has over 14 million 'customers'.
Maple Story
Operator: Wizet
Web: http://www.maplestory.com
Model: Virtual Asset Purchase
MapleStory has a combined total of over 50 million players in all of its versions, with over 18 million subscribers in China.
Second Life
Operator: Lindin Labs
Web: http://www.secondlife.com
Model: Virtual Asset Purchase/Pay-to-play
Total registered users now number 3.1 million in Second Life, up from 124,000 a year ago. At any given time, ten to thirty thousand of those users are online and logged in to the world.
So what does it all mean?
Nothing, really. PR agencies make those numbers do what they want them to. Personally, I can't stand that kind of manipulation, even though I will concede to the financial benefits reaped from such lies. I've left the obvious MMO out of the above list, because I don't want to start another month-long argument about a certain 8 million people killing boars while listening to Eye of the Tiger and occasionally checking World of Whorecraft (actual website, NSFW, I won't link it).
