Which one do you use most of the time and wish everyone would use and why?

I use Trillian because of its compatability with most others so other people dont have to change to what I use.

Google Talk. I refuse to use anything else.

Gtalk. It's the obvious choice. Only IM I'll use.

Gtalk. Not only because it works better than any other I've used, but because it can communicate with Mxit.

Gtalk

But I use Pidjin at home ;)

it takes up a heck of a lot less space on my screen - a critical factor when I am talking to 4-5 people at once (what can I say, people like to chat to me ;) )

Google Talk - because it's efficient and integrates with other Google technologies.

Pidgin. (http://www.pidgin.im/)

google talk. used it the longest of all my IMs. I also like Xfire - because it is more focused on games

I think we can distinguish this into two categories. Which is the best IM protocol (I.E: Jabber, Yahoo, ICQ etc.) and which IM is the best, from a piece of software perspective. I like Jabber, it's highly configurable and it is what Google makes use of in GTalk, same as Mxit; thus they can communicate with each other. From a software point of view I also like Gtalk the client, however since I use other messaging protocols too I use Pidgin, it's simple and clean.

My 2 cents

Google Talk. It's nice, it's compact and it works!

I have never used anything other than Gtalk, but it's because im a google fan... Isn't there a lekker IM that supports all of the above (or most of them)

I prefer the Google Talk client. I used to use portable Miranda (http://www.miranda-im.org), but since I have converted the vast majority of my friends over to GTalk I don't need to.

For those of you that really love using GTalk, but still have stubborn contacts on other protocols, Lifehacker (http://lifehacker.com/software/top/chat-with-aim-msn-yahoo-and-other-contacts-over-google-talk-289097.php) has a great piece on using an intermediate service to use GTalk for all of them.

There are quite a few, many of which have already been mentioned here, such as Pidgen (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&ct=res&cd=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pidgin.im%2F&ei=XUvERoqCNKKEwAH1ktT6Cg&usg=AFQjCNEN3hlVu1i-Sp_uP0r2JLip986AGQ&sig2=ARUE02Kp3-DANb_B6f9B4g), Miranda (http://www.miranda-im.org) and Trillian (http://www.trillian.com).
I personally prefer Miranda of the three because of it's built in portability (I always run it straight from a memory stick) and the ability to customize it to be even more minimal than GTalk. As illustrated below:

Gtalk. D:
Gad to see that everyone is using it instead of the more popular Windows Live Messanger (fomally known as MSN).

Gtalk too.

MSN was such failure on my interwebz, so I was eventually forced offa it. Haven't tried much else.

I'd consider Miranda, but I like the fact that Gtalk sends a kyoot little popup my way whenever I get mail. ^^

well... its simple... first IM is always (most of the times) the one you use isn't it.... in my case it's XFIRE and it rocks.... most of my friends have it and it tracks gaming.... but also mxit on pc with build in msn capabilities

Thanks to Miranda's inherent extensibility, it can do that too, along with notifying you of all kinds of events such as the arrival of mail to any POP mail account and new items in RSS feeds.

Not really using any IM much at the moment.
I have em all, Trillian(with everything set up) and Gtalk, and Xfire.
They start up when I log in, I close them.

It comes and goes, sometimes I'll be in phase where I chat allot, sometimes It annoys me.

Gtalk
Windows Live
Mxit

It doesn't bother me, they all perform the same function. Some people talk to me via one or the other, so I use both.

I use GTalk mostly... So thats what I would have to say

But also have:
2go, Mxit, MSN, Jabber, Xfire, and a few others... Ive sort of gone through them 1 by 1, and now I puposely avoid all except GTalk amd MSN, as I find them most practical.
