View Full Version : HD or SD trailers?

These days, more and more game trailers are being released as HD (High Definition) trailers. Do you personally prefer SD (Standard Definition) trailers, or HD trailers? If you prefer SD, make a post saying why (computer specs?), and if you prefer HD trailers, also drop a note if you want with your PC specs and what you use to play them!

HD > My cap.
So I prefer Standard Definition trailers.
But I would rather watch trailers in HD.

SD gets my vote; basically the same as H3adSho7 said, the Cap's a bastard.

I voted HD, but sometimes my PC battles. I almost never download trailers of any kind, so cap isn't a problem... I just watch the ones on the Cover DVD. :D

If its HD on the cover dvd then my vote is yes.

I bought myself a 20.1" LCD the other day so when I watch low res movies on it they really don't look great.
I only use K-Lite and MP11 it seems as though when you install K-Lite codec pack MP11 also uses those codecs when needed which is nice. K-Lite plays everything I throw at it.

My PC can most definitely run HD trailers. The reason I voted for SD trailres is because the are smaller and therefore means more content will be on the disc. I almost never watch a trailer more than once anyway, so HD is waste.
In this case I vote quantity>quality.

SD, for PC spec reasons. I don't have a dinosaur of a machine (hey, it ran C&C3 and FEAR), but I want a movie, not a slide show ^^;. In cover DVD terms I second the above post: quantity over quality.

HD. Much nicer but pwns my cap. My PC is well equipped to play HD videos so its my vote.
HD all the way. Quality over quantity. :P
I would rather watch 1 or 2 good quality vids of a game/games then 5+ vids were you can not see how good the game looks.

Pffft. I don't care about "how good the game looks"! I want to see some ****ing gameplay.
Because Graphics does not equal Gameplay. This is why UT2007 will probably suck.

Gameplay from a Vid? lol
There is no way you can see/say how a game plays other then you sitting in front of it playing it yourself.
If you want to see the gameplay go play a demo.
SD for me. The HD movies are beautifull but it kills my PC.
@Yuan: True but.......I'm starting to care less and less about visuals everyday. When I watch a preview of a game I want to see elements of the gameplay and such, if I want to see how pretty the game is (most games these days look stunning anyway) I'll look at pics.
My outlook on life is usualy quality over quantity but in this case, quantity over quality thanx.

I prefer HD, but only if it's a top-notch clip (such as the GTAIV trailer, etcetera). I think the “lesser” games' clips should say SD though.

If the vids were in sd there'd be more space for demos. :-)
I agree with skullhozer/ruandre though. It's ok if the premiun/AAA titles are HD, but the rest should be SD.
HD kewl have no prob with that

I voted SD, mainly for the reason mentioned above - cap.

Sign me up for some of them HD trailers, Mik. For me, its quality that matters, not quantity. HD trailers are teh future!

I think the people that are voting aren't realizing that Standard resolution and low resolution aren't the same thing.
Who here that voted for HD actually watches the same vid more than once anyway?
Another thing. By having fewer vids(because HD takes up more space) we could be missing out on some games that could have attracted our attention.

He? Please explain. I'm noob you know.
Low is lower than SD right, is that what you meant? Or that SD isn't low but it's not HD either, kinda in between? I'm confused, I wanna go play Gears of War, everyone understands that.

let's say SD is 640*480 low would be 320*240.
Basically SD is medium.

I voted HD. While my PC can't keep up, its more because its CPU (old Athlon XP 2600+) can't keep up with decompressing the streams. If you can get the trailers in WMV I might be able to play them on my XBox 360 and look at the vids on my LCD TV.
While I have 3G, no cap is large enough for all the beautiful HD trailers out there. Therefore NAG is providing an invaluable service by publishing these trailers on the DVD.
Quality over quantity. hands up who wants to see the StarCraft 2 gameplay movie at 640x480 or even lower (just to save space)?

HD, but at no higher than 720p (even 480p is very high quality, enough so to make our mouths water and it works on relatively low-en PCs) as the width is then at 1280 pixels, the native width resolution of a 17/19" 3:4 screen. 1080p is just too large for any of us common folk to make use of.
Also with the recent advances in GPU technology to take advantage of the common HD codecs (even at 1080p with low CPU load) you can't help but vouch for HD in the near future. Also HD isn't really all that huge, at about 50MB per trailer (720p), you can fit quite a huge sum onto a double-layered DVD disc.

If this is just in general, I prefer SD. Mainly because HD trailers are just too big to download.
If this is for the Cover DVD, then I vote HD.
dammit
14-07-2007, 08:16 PM
I guess I would vote SD as not many people (as far as I know) have high quality machines. Most have high quality parts but the whole thing might be missing something to make HD worth it (take me for eg...just bought a new pc but have to wait and save a while before I can get a DX10 video card.) Of course, my pc can handle HD, but not everyones can.
...and I guess I hardly watch the game trailers anyway :P

I'm running a Celeron 2.6Ghz, nVidia Fx 5200, I can take HD on both 480p and 720p. Seriously, at those resolutions there is no excuse for lack of performance.

Unfortunately not everyone has the same tastes, and thus one person's opinion will not be enough for all NAG readers. IMO

How about we meet in the middle something like 540P its higher than SD but lower than HD
HD =720p
SD=480p

I think this thread was started to find out what kind of trailers people wanted on the dvd. I stand to be corrected, but if this is true then we don't need to take into consideration everyone's cap limits or download capabilities when deciding what type of trailers are prefered.

HD please. We have the technology, lets make use of it. And it looks better.
SD... cap, and I really don't care about graphics... if the trailer is good then I could be suprised by the games "graphics" (though I prefer gameplay above graphics)... and when it's SD then I don't wait so long to see it.

SD - plays all the time - HD sometimes slows up.
HD only necessary to show amazing graphic detail, like Crysis.

U have a good poit ..but if space is a big problem on the dvd , i think there should be less demos! , there should only be 3 good demos the most ,then i'm sure there will be enough space on the dvd .How often do u play the demos? Once or twice ?there are some demos on the every months dvd that we dont need or want ,instead we can fit more HD trailers and patches or watever else u guys want. Think about that

Well I love HD trailers. The quality is good but the size is B I G. And my cap can't handle it. But for the NAG cover disc I prefer HD trailers. But another fact is that the trailer is always better than the game actually is

HD all the way!!! Nothing is worse than a bad looking trailer. Just a couple of looking trailers is better than a bunch of bad trailers where you can't see what's going on.

Again SD doesn't mean low definition. All those 320*240 vids aren't sd. They're low definition.

I have to say that all games these days have really good graphical quality.A trailer should represent the actual game as far as picture quality is concerned.I need to "see"what is worth looking forward to.In the context of this argument SD just does not cut it.

I geuse with SD trailers you can get more onto a DVD. But HD gets my vote. Take alot from my cap tho. My PC can run it perfect and I have a 22" Samsung LCD. HD trailers looks much better.
