Don't you find it annoying when a gaming magazine reviews a game, and then doesn't actually have a single screenshot from the game itself?

I was looking at the August issue of G.E.A.R., page 56, their review of Flyboys - and every single shot on the page is *concept art*.

Isn't that a bit stupid?

Don't they "borrow/use" reviews from there UK Head Office and yes i want to see a screenshot. Conceptual art makes me think did they really play the game or just copy and paste the review.

No, wisp - G.E.A.R. is not PC Format.

PC Format is a syndicated publication, so they buy articles and reviews from the UK magazine, yes.

But G.E.A.R. is a seperate publication (but also published by Intelligence Publishing, same as PC Format, yes).

Thank you thought they were the same :)

It's the same situation if you want to buy a car and can't see it, it's illogical to do it.

Reading a review without screenshots isn't the same as buying an invisible car. It would be the same as reading an ad for car without a pic.

I take it your one of those people that doesn't actually read the review and just looks at the pictures.

@ Chevron - Are you looking to irritate me?

I still want to know what it looks like before I buy it, don't make rash judgements please, it's stupid.

I think we've already established this. Because, as I've mentioned already, buying an invisible car would be ****ING AWESOME.

Yes invisible car would be nice, but public parking spaces will be a bitch.

Actually no. There are a lot of people that don't read reviews. Some of my friends included. They'll look at the pictures and say "aw, this game looks so cool".

Games that I have no interest in whatsoever I will only look at the pics, why would I buy a mag for R30+ each month to look at pictures, doesn't make sense.

We ask ourselves that every month, when we realized from the letters we get sent that people don't actually read the words on the page.

Not to be all high&mighty; the average readers of the mag are very young, no? Like 12-15? Even if they read the words on the pages, the letters still wouldn't be that great.

To me, the written reviews are more important then the screenies. Especially when the penmanship is so SNAPPY (playing on the number of times that word was used in NAG August 2007. Snappy ftw). So it makes a nice picture, but does it entertain?

No, PloPshoP - the average NAG reader is 20+.

However, the people sending us emails appear to be from the minority of younger kids who read the magazine.

All the people capable of writing us a nice email, don't bother.

... I'll write u.

At the same time, I truly marvel how people still manage to speak ignorantly about issues they actually get *informed* about in mags like this ... the stuff that they're allegedly "reading". >.<

the people who can write are too busy managing companies, changing nappies, making love to their wives, or playing HL2.... (or messing about on the forums instead of going to bed)
Although I *did* actually write one, and got a very thoughtful and excellent reply from a James Francis, who claimed to be the editor. :) I was seriously impressed by the response!

Well it's not totally necessary... I mean if you wanted to nit pick you could read the review, like it and go look for the game and look at the screen shots at the back of the game package...I mean for example all the screenshots used for NAGs review of Overlord were from the back of the box and in the manual. But I think you show always have at least one picture of the game.

Low budget games and games with poor production values tend to cover their boxes with concept art or mockup art to fool people into buying them. A magazine doing the same thing smacks of either dishonesty or complete lack of interest.

I really don't like it. Plus I have nightmares about invisible cars hitting me as I'm walking across an otherwise deserted street... S'true.
