We know the Metal Gear Solid series is famous for its long cut-scenes, but this tops everything! Metal Gear Solid 4, the latest instalment in Hideo Kojima's seminal stealth series, has cut-scenes (note the plural) that approach the 90 minutes mark.

For those troubled with time keeping, that's the length of a feature film.

The news comes from PSW magazine, who's been and finished MGS4, and then promptly whispered in our ears about the shocking 90-minute cut-scenes. The latest issue hits newsstands today, by the way.

We were expecting long story sequences (MGS2 approached the 45 minute mark in one) but an hour and a half of cinematics was unexpected.

The good news is that you can now skip or pause the scenes. Hands up though, how many of you are actually going to sit through the full 90 minutes?

"MGS4's story is massive. The videogame equivalent of all three Godfather movies on one disc," says the mag.

"As you'd expect, you'll spend a lot of time watching cut-scenes, so if you found previous games' story exposition laborious, then you'd better find yourself a nice cushion and plenty of teabags in readiness for MGS4's.

"They can be skipped, but you'll be missing out on some of the finely crafted examples of FMV footage anywhere in gaming," the article boldly proclaims

Just pause and skip? With cut-scenes that long you may as well have fast forward, rewind and chapter select.

Thank goodness they let you skip the cut-scenes. Can you imagine the "Angry German Kid" if you couldn't. There wouldn't be anything left standing in his room by the end of the cut-scene.

Why would anyone play a story focussed game and just skip the cutscenes?

Actually, it was a joke.

But, good question, and I have an answer: In case you are replaying (lost your savegames perhaps) and don't need to see the whole cut-scene again.

And I'm one of those that soak up every once of cut-scene and in-game story (except when reading all the literature in games like Oblivion, that's a bit much), so I would not skip the cut-scenes (the first time).

I suppose this is where blu-ray space capacity comes in.

And knowing MGS, there will probly be some sort of secret action during the cutscenes when using the analogue sticks or something.

Well it's one way to keep the frame rates up. Remove the unpredictability of human input.

Awesome "game".

Um.

Don't be a ****.

The "game" parts of MSG4 are ****ing awesome, intense and VERY well designed.
The cutscenes are action-packed and spectacular to watch, NOTHING in existence is like it.

Remember MGS2? It had a 45min cut-scene and it was one hell of a game.

Now I agree that 90min for a single scene is a bit long, however it could simply be an exaggeration.

EDIT: If not, well bring on the popcorn!

I have never been as jealous of you as a reviewer as I am right now.

I find that statement really funny considering you just bought a 360 and not a PS3. :)

I never said that it was an easy choice to get the 360. It came down to $$$ in the end. But I know that MGS is going to be something really special.

It was MGS, FFXIII and GoW 3 that nearly swayed me. No regrets though.

Welcome to my world, I live for the stories/plots but MOST of the people I know (or have known), who play games, complain about not being able to skip cutscenes so they can get back into the 'real game'.

Hell Gamespy and IGN spend most of their reviews talking about multiplayer (if there is) and when they get to the single player part, they're sure to mention if you can skip cutscenes or not.

Also how long in total are the cutscenes? If that one is 90 mins and the rest together are 10mins -it's not that spectaclar. But if we looking at hours of FMV -then wow

Any news whether MGS4 will need to be installed?

For those who think this is the first time a game has had 'epic' cutscenes, you obviously haven't played the Xenosaga games.

Seems the rumor was false, though I wouldn't really mind, it is Solid Snakes final adventure after all.

No 90 minute cut scenes (http://dailygamesnews.blogspot.com/2008/05/gamepro-kills-mgs4-90-minute-cut-scene.html)

More like watchable game. Still, it all depends on if the cutscenes can keep you glued to your screen or not.
