Hey guys, sitting in dubai and my sis has asked me to look at her laptop and figure out why it is so damn slow. She bought it less than a year ago (and is too lazy to take it back to the person who sold it to her in rsa) and its just been extremely slow functioning since then. A restart, for example, takes between ten and fifteen minutes :/

My guess is its the resource hungry vista but i've run defrags and virus scans just to be sure and everything else seems to be fine. Here the specs:

Asus Notebook A6 Series
Intel Celeron CPU 440 @ 1.86 Ghz
895 MB RAM
80 GB hard drives
ATI Radeon Xpress 200M
Vista Basic

Anyone have any suggestions on what could make this machine run faster or what could be causing the lag in performance? Thanks!

My motto when it comes to slow pc's is:
"Theres nothing a hot cup of FORMAT wont fix"

Backup everything and format/reinstall!

Vista Basic shouldn't sap a lot of resources, so I'd rather follow Creep's suggestion. Format or DBaN.

Switch to XP?

Could just be a hugely fragmented hard drive with lots of old files laying around.

delete all temp files, defrag, scan for a virus.

If this Fails-backup and format.

Even Vista Home Basic will run crap on that setup after a few weeks (or months).

I've had so many people rock up with this "budget" laptop they bought with Vista Basic on it - and it runs like crap. All these low-level "Vista-Ready" notebooks are the biggest crock of ****e under the sun.

"Downgrade" to XP.

EDIT: and for god's sake just save yourself the defrag.

"Downgrade" to XP.

Is the Norton anti-virus installed?

I'd also advise her to get some more ram.
