I found this kinda funny read for yourself. (I this may be old news I think)
Here's the cartoon
http://www.africancrisis.org/images/Cartoon_Racist_Rin_tin_tin.jpg
and heres the link to the site Here (http://www.africancrisis.co.za/Article.php?ID=16786&)
Rin Tin Tin is a cartoon from colonial times. Apparently the author was a Belgian and it was about Rin Tin Tin's adventures in the darkest Africa which then was the Belgian Congo (later called Zaire and now called the DRC). The DRC STILL IS the darkest Africa...
In South Africa, there was serious talk about banning Rin Tin Tin books (which I think were produced in the 1930s) because they are RACIST.
Well, I would like to give you all a RACIST CARTOON TREAT! Let's take a look at what these blacks are so over-sensitive about.
There are some who said that its silly banning it because it reflects the values of the time. So it may be that Rin Tin Tin won't be banned.
Frankly, I don't know what the problem is.
Is Rin Tin Tin so unrealistic and racist? Judge for yourself.
Doctors with Western training have to save the lives of the blacks all the time - and also through the Colonial era! And how different is that from old "Racist Rin Tin Tin" of the 1930s? And what's wrong with the cartoon anyway? The White Colonial man, using his science cures the Black man and allows him to live!
In what way is the White man GUILTY OF A CRIME? That's the part I'd like to know. The White man isn't stealing from the Black man. The White man isn't killing the Black man. He's trying to help him in a pleasant way despite the obvious ignorance of the Black about his own illness. Now if you can't handle that fact - "the ignorance of the black" - then you haven't read much or seen much or have much knowledge about LIFE ITSELF. If the Blacks are trying to hide their own ignorance, then the only ones they're fooling are THEMSELVES!
Why is it so hard for them to just admit that the White man saw their problem - a problem which they could not solve - and he SOLVED IT - life moves forward for everyone - Black AND White alike! The White does it and does not even ask for payment or even for THANKS for helping the Black man. Why is this a crime? Jan.

Why does the author keep on referring to Rin Tin Tin (who was a war dog hero)?
Anyway, I don't agree with everything he says in the article, but banning Tin Tin is such a knee-jerk reaction. Surely freedom of expression is more important than ushering out some (alleged) racist comic that is not really read by the generations of today.

I used to like Tin Tin when I was small. Was my moms favourite comic too.
The author makes some good points.

If you go to the page you will see someone corrected him by saying its Tin Tin not Rin Tin Tin
I won't even comment. Also, Africancrisis.

I love Tin Tin, its one of my best comics. But banning it would just be stupid, as pointed out Herge wrote it in the 1930's , a slightly different era with differents views to us now.
But I don't agree with the rest of what guy wrote. The white Colonial man gave them diseases in the first place.

ZOMG RACIAL ISSUES ARE SERIOUS BUSINESS IN AFRICA!!!
Actually, yes. Yes, they are.
As a white person, this is the part where I hurriedly wipe my hands clean of the matter and not touch this 'racially-charged topic' with a 40ft pole*
*Please note the satirical nature of this comment. Please don't make me stab you in the eyes repeatedly.

I have to say I didn't know what the reason for the our cry over the 'racist tin tin' and now I have seen the actual cartoon I think this whole issue is being blown out of proportion and should be dropped instantly.
yes it shows a while man helping a black man who is sick so why is that such an issue and since this was written when balck people were oppressed by the white man, I am surprised that the 'N' word didn't pop up.
Tin tin has always been fair-righteous-kind and so this is bull****e.
Even text running back to apartheid are kept and published- This is not out of current ideas or oppressing balck people but more of a way to understand apartheid and see how we can avoide it. There are museums dedicated to the Nazi rule which serve as a reminder of how bad the humen race can be. There is a saying that goes- 'If we forget our history, we will repeat it'.
There is sooo much crap flying around today about 'racist' people/comments and it makes me sick. In the U.K. you cannot say 'coloured person' but that is an entire race of people who actually exist.
I'm tired of being labelled a 'racist' white person. I was born in 1986-I was 8 when the first election took place. Apartheid was a word and ment nothing to me.
PPL can read sexism, racism and any other kind of descrimation into anything. If you look hard enough you can find anything offencesive, i agree with Frozenfireside you can't label all whites racist, Children are still learning what "apartheid " was from history books and were not even alive during it, it is not there fault . You can't blame the child for the sins of the Father

Just to add, sometimes I get this feeling that racism is a one way street according to our government, only white people are racist but not visa versa.
On the cover of todays beeld. Mr Blanco Mabaso said about the protests to the name changes and the fact that Pretoria is now a suburb of Tswane and I quote(from afrikaans) "Don't tempt the ANC we will change it aswell."
Now to me that just screems "**** you boere, we are in charge now, lolololol"
Miss Gwen Ramkogopa said "Pretoria was at the heart of opression in the old South-Africa", now to me if you can justify it like that, you can justify killing all the apartheid supporters or even those who were content in old SA, because they were at the heart of the opression.
I think the government is looking for excuses to cover up it's own wrong doings, in that they, in essence are heading down the same path as the old regeme.
end rant(everyone is ranting these days I also want to) kthx.
This is why I'm glad my bursary includes an Internship for me to gtfo of this ****hole of a country. It's seriously just a case of everyone pointing fingers and trying to dig up better sob-stories.
You know those Motorcross/Aeroplane cards? The one's you used to play as an ickle little boy, comparing the stats? Yeah, that's S.A. Just sub out the cars and planes for political bull**** and the stats for **** we ALL should have gotten over long ago.
Jesus ****ing christ.
EDIT:
A government is a government is a government. I don't know what illusions of grandeur everyone else is tripping the **** out in, but we never had and never will have a satisfactory one.
If we ever do, hit me up.

In b4 tiresome scoutmaster patriotic defence followed by rabid reactionist reply followed by full-scale rage-bate about the crime, political climate, pride and coconuts of South Africa.

You forgot to mention Morgue and his tried-and-trusted "MIKTAR HAETS S.A" essay.

Ditto. It's all silly really. It's like fighting fire with fire. You can't fight oppression with oppresssion.

Remember the best way for a Government to fool you is to DISTRACT YOU!! While they distract you with things like street names, they can try and combine the Western and Eastern****ing Cape inorder to prevent the Western Cape from having DA control. Once thats done we can just all wallow in our self pity while HIV-victims don't get their drugs, curroption infests our highest areas of Government and Democracy goes flying out the window, along with Mantos thrid bottle or Booze...Who wants to join me for a coup!??

On that. Once my younger brother had a black girlfriend,ok. So then some of the black boys in his grade said that he couldn't be her boyfriend, saying stuff like it was apertheid day and beating him up and stuff. luckily it stopped once the teachers got involved.

We're treading into dangerous waters now, seeing as we're starting to discuss to individuals (with their own dynamics) instead of government. I'm really sorry to hear about that, those guys were some serious *******s*, however - That type of thing happens all over, it's not a black/white exclusive thing. My sisters boyfriend had a mate get beat up when he tried to visit someone in a predominantly white hostel. He was in a coma. I had my fair share of run-in's on school, and I still experience numerous racist encounters to this day.
So?
Do I make a blanket statement? No. Do I suddenly express hate for all white, indian, black etc. people? No.
We all, and I'm reffering to the current youth in S.A, need to stop trying to fight our parents battles. I'm not saying what is currently going on in this country is all good and fine. I'm saying, try and make changes on a personal level. Everyone always refers to the goverment, the system, the man when discussing problems in today's society. No one ever takes it and says, "hey what can I do".
I haven't really read this thread, seeing as on a forum like NAG where the majority of members are white - Certain trends in discussion always seem to be followed, but I'm willing to pitch in a bit. I know someone's going to jump on this post, Statistics flinging and in somehow try to crush my mood and by all means - Go for it.
In other news, and just out of interest, it's basically this tension that is driving me to leave this country. It's not a case of, "I'm being opressed, **** you" many feel, but rather the constant bickering between the two parties and I've just had enough of it.
* I went through something similar (interracial relationship) and caught a lot of flack from a certain group of white males. Straight up mini-Boeremag they were, but hey. There you go.

I didn't see a single indication of lulz in that post. OMGWTF?
I'll tell you what, though. Sometimes I wonder whether talking about the issue actually helps, or just drives the sensationalism machine further. It's all good and well having open communication, but when it becomes a channel of woeful anecdotes it ... well, Irunno. It ingrains certain ideas more, which may not be helpful.

That **** is the truth. Sometimes I'm really ashamed of my people(Afrikaners). Maybe I'm just stereotyping, but some seems like they were born *******s.
