If you play anything, post a pic of it here! even if it's your Guitar Hero controller or Rock Band setup!

I'll go first:D

This is my replica of the Guitar 喜多 建介, Kita Kensuke uses. He is the lead giutarist of The Asian Kung-Fu Generation. That's him playing on the screen behind the chair, but my one is black, I just think there's something timeless about black giutars.

I also have a vintage acustic giutar, but i'll post that later.

Here it is...

Black with cream edging on a Les Paul shape is B E A utiful.
My Ibanez RG is busy getting the Floyd Rose reset, so will post a pic this weekend, along with my Takamine mat-finish accoustic custom

The trim looks very yellow in that pic, it's more pale than that but yes, the cream looks great on black.

Those Hawain giutar stuff their amazing.

The ukulele (pronounced /ˌjuːkəˈleɪli/, from Hawaiian: ʻukulele), variantly spelled ukelele (particularly in the UK), or alternately abbreviated uke, is a chordophone classified as a plucked lute; it is a subset of the guitar family of instruments, generally with four strings or four courses of strings.[1]

The ukulele originated in the 19th century as a Hawaiian interpretation of small Portuguese guitar called cavaquinho (not to be confused with the so called Portuguese guitar). It gained great popularity elsewhere in the United States during the early 20th century, and from there spread internationally.

Tone and volume of the instrument vary with size and construction. Ukuleles come in four sizes, Soprano, Concert, Tenor, and Baritone.

They're well built hard-rock guitars. Here's what you do: Plug it in, and if you like the clean sound, take it. Don't worry about distortion etc as you can sort that out with processing.

I love guitars. They're like my children.

These days my family consists of: an Epiphone Les Paul Studio, an Ibanez GiO (I bought it purely to cover it in stickers and leave it lying around my living room), an Epiphone '58 reissue Explorer, an Epiphone EB-0 SG bass, and a Fender 50th Anniversary Precision bass.

Unfortunately my Les Paul and P-bass are both at my parents house in South Africa (I'm a globetrotter), but I can post pics of my others later.

Sweet setup, Machine. Not all too far from mine (apart from the Amp, I've got a Marshall MG50, which I need to get rid of). I've got the GT8, but wish I'd bought the ME-5 instead. It's analog, so doesn't suck tone like the GT8 does. Will prob sell my GT8 soon for an ME-5 + Wah.

Are those standard pickups?

EDIT: Sweet ****, onona. How long have you been playing and what do you do for a living that you can afford all that equipment?

I've been playing for about 16 years. Bass is actually my main instrument, but I love all guitars. I would have more of them if I had more space, but alas, these beauties clutter up my already cluttered living room (which includes numerous Guitar Hero/Rock Band controllers too... I'm such a geek). My career? I'm a galactic overlord. I tax my various planetary subjects heavily to feed my lust for stringed pieces of wood.

Well, the neck pickup is standard come-with-guitar but my bridge pickup is a Seymour Duncan SH-13 Dimebucker, great pickup.

BTW my Boss ME-5 is from the late 1980's, my uncle gave it to me when I started playing guitar.

The current version of the Boss "ME" range is the ME-50. My Boss ME-5 IS actually digital not analog at all. It has no knobs as such and it can hold multiple patches much like the GT-8 can (unlike the ME-50 which is fully analog and can't mix around different settings and patches).

I don't use my effects pedal for distortion, just for a bit of flanger and the occasional compression. Oh and of course the Noise Suppressor keeps back the hum/feedback.

Looking at an SH-13 myself for my bridge. Will pick one up for Xmas I think.
I heard that the ME-50 is analog, not in terms of patches etc, but in terms of how it handles the changing of the sound internally.

Machine
11-07-2008, 03:11 PM
I've tried out both the ME-50 and GT-8... The ME-50 can't have different settings for the individual effects, the GT-8 can... So can my old ME-5.

That explains why it's also internally analog though.

A friend of mine also has the Seymour Duncan SH-13 in his guitar and he loves it, you won't be disappointed.

I have a black and white Squier Stratocaster (Fender 50th Anniversary edition), modified with a DiMarzio bridge humbucker for happy times, a black Ibanez RG for shredding, and a black Epiphone SG Standard for bowel-loosening power chords. I push 'em through a sexy, red vinyl-finished Carlsbro GLX Special and a BOSS ME-50.

I'd post pictures, but I'm currently residing in the wrong hemisphere.

@ Machine: Unless I've entirely misunderstood your post, I'm really quite sure the ME-50 can have different settings for each effect. o_O

@Cleric: I'm currently using Rotosound 13-54 tuned to Low-C but I was using D'addario 11-49 in standard E before. The Rotosound last much longer than the D'addario, they hold the tone for longer too.
I heard that Elixirs are excellent, I've also heard that DR strings are also one of the best out there.

@Azimuth: I might be awfully mistaken but I'm sure I remember that you can't have different settings. As in you can't have a low gain distortion and then foot switch into a high gain distortion, you would have to manually turn the knobs to change the settings/levels of the individual effect. Am I right???

No, you weren't entirely wrong. The ME-50 can be used in such a way that each pedal on the unit functions like a stomp box, as each one operates the distortion, modulation, and delay effects respectively. Using it like that, you can't switch between different types of overdrive, for example, without leaning over and flipping the dials.

But I don't ever use it like that. I switch to the memory mode, and use presets instead.

I don't have a pic of my guitar handy at the moment, but this is the one Epiphone always uses.

Epiphone G400 Xtreme. Part of the old Goth Edition series. Has a Floyd Rose Tune-o-matic bridge and some type of "ultra-hot" single coil passive pickups. Saving up for proper active pickups, although I don't play nearly as much as I used to.

It's big, so I'm linking. (http://www.epiphone.com/press/G400X.jpg)

I'm quite sure that SG has humbuckers.

Most humbuckers ARE passive pickups in most cases. As in passive magnets, in other words they don't use a battery. Active pickups use batteries, they are powered magnets. Active pickups usually have better output and response as well as no hum unlike passive.

You can get active single-coils as well.

EMG's (81's and 85's) are the most popular active pickup manufacturer but Seymour Duncan also make active pickups too.

EMG also make passive pickups, it's their "HZ" range if I'm not mistaken.

That is very sexy! Out of interest and if you don't mind, how much did you pay for it (interested to see local pricing vs UK).

I currently have a Jackson JS30KE Kelly (don't have a camera atm :\)...

Very happy with it atm but I'm wanting to spend a day at Paul Bothner's or Music Connection and see what else is out there.

I paid ?230 for it. And oooh I love the Kelly. Actually, if they'd had Kellys with reverse headstocks at the store where I bought my Dinky, I don't think I'd have been able to resist buying one of those (especially since they were the same price as the Dinkys), but they only had regular ones. I LOVE Jackson Kellys. One of these days, I'll seek out a reverse headstock model and add it to my collection. I'd love to get one in yellow or red, but the black is super sexy too. <3

@Cloud_Ratha:

How does "adding more speakers" increase the power output if the amp can only output 500watts???

500watts is already RIDICULOUSLY loud even for solid state transistor tech. I read up, this amp can only output in these two modes depending on the speakers attached (250W@8-Ohms and 500W@4-Ohms)

That's an Epiphone from the looks of the headstock but it's hard to tell with such a low-res. The lack of neck binding tells me it's one of the cheaper models but the pickup switch location tells me it's NOT the cheapest version one can pickup.

-- EDIT! ---

Found it. It's an Epiphone Les Paul 100.

Dude, Epiphone is part of the Gibson family, that's why the neck says Gibson on it. I've seen a lot of Epiphones that sport the Gibson logo, they're still Epiphones though.

Nferno is right. Listen man, I've been researching, buying and playing guitars for 9 years now. I would know and even if I didn't I would research some more.

Epiphone is a sub-brand of Gibson. Just as Squier is a sub-brand of Fender. These sub-brands sell cheaper versions of the core brands products, usually produced in a factory in China, Indonesia or Korea. They feature less stringent quality control, so problems with fretting and finishes could arise in the odd unit.

From what I can tell, your guitar could be an older Epiphone Les Paul Special. I've only ever seen the Special II.

Here's the new version, an old friend of mine has this guitar. It's one the cheapest Les Pauls one can get. http://www.epiphone.com/default.asp?ProductID=21&CollectionID=6

Don't get me wrong, it's a decent guitar. I've played on my friend's Special II and it had great tone and response, only the neck was not up to par.

McDangerous
11-11-2010, 10:15 AM
I honestly don't see a problem in buying an Epiphone. I've played on Epiphone Explorers and Les Pauls and their original Gibson counterparts as well, and I felt very little difference to be honest. Granted, the Gibson had a fuller tone, and a bit more sustain and warmth, but that's about it. The actual feel of the guitar was near identical to me.

Same as my LTD, it's also a sub-brand of ESP, but it's one of the highest quality feeling guitars I've ever played. It wasn't cheap either.

Oh, and very nice guitars Scope and Nferno, really dig 'em. The paint work on your Squire is awesome Scope, was it a custom job or a limited ed.? If it were on a super-strat or a Shecter-ish shape it'd be perfect, I'm just not a big fan of regular strat guitars (even though I own one).

Squier bullet strat.

Picked up it up for just over R1000. I've been playing for a almost two years now, and it's served me well. Here's a review (http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/reviews/electric_guitars/squier/bullet_strat/index.html).

Really? While I found the action and overall feel of the guitar well-suited to novice players, I just can't get a nice distortion tone out of my Squire, well, not as nice as any guitar with humbuckers. I'd say the Ibanez Gio series is a really good starting point, and they're just as inexpensive as the Squire Strats.

Is it a legit version of Guitar Rig? How much does it cost actually? Also, what sound card are you using? I tried a demo version once with my SoundBlaster Value card, but I couldn't get a good sound out of it signal wise. It was all messed up and had heaps of latency. It might have been my feeble attempt at setting it up as well.

I'd actually love to see some videos or hear some sound clips of everyone's playing. I don't want to have a show-off competition, I'd just like to see the different styles you guys use. Just an idea.

This is just me messing about a few months ago. Hooked my guitar to my multi-fx and then through to my laptop, used SOUND RECORDER to record a rhythm and layered a crappy lead on it.

http://www.quickshare.co.za/files/qvezz585/Mix.wav.html

And yeah, it sounds like I added reverb, but didn't. That's the wonders of using SOUND RECORDER to mess about with your doodles.

And just for ****s and giggles, here's a song my friend and I did when I was like 17. We were high, it was improv and we had a hell of a good time doing it. Recorded about 20 songs in that session and I have always kept them for nostalgia's sake :)

Well yeah :P

Obviously a strat/single-coil isn't the way to go for good distortion or high gain stuff. I can get some very heavy tones but they aren't the cleanest.

It's a pirate copy, if I had money to buy software I'd buy an amp instead wouldn't I :P

I'm using a Creative SB X-Fi. It also does take a LOT of fiddling a tweaking to get it working nicely. My latency is 9ms.

Might be tempted to upload something, just as more of a demonstration of what you can do with a budget guitar and no amp.

Thought I'd share this

Inherited a Fender strat when my cousin died about 3 years ago. It's transparent blue. This guitar looked pretty old since the wood underneath the paint had started turning yellow, making the blue look a bit green in places. The white plastic on the pickups, volume knobs and pickup selecter had also gone yellow and the varnish on the back of the neck was cracking. I decided to check out the serial number and referenced it with a book I found. Apparently this Fender was made between 1959 and 1963. Still sounds great :)

Well, **** me, I have a piano.

http://i851.photobucket.com/albums/ab71/B4RR1E/piano.jpg?t=1290671891

It's a Danemann, about 50-60 years old.

Sorry for the bad quality pic. I took it with my 2MP cellphone.

There's actually an interesting story behind how I acquired it (the piano, that is.)

My mom is a teacher at a Catholic school (well, it's Catholic by name, but the truth is there aren't more than 5 Catholic kids at the school.) Anyway, the school used to be a convent for nuns, and it is still owned by nuns (although nuns aren't supposed to own anything) but is run by a headmistress (a drunk and a chain smoker, who only got the job because she was Catholic.)

Now, I had been learning guitar for a while, but didn't really like it, so I set my eyes on owning a piano. I knew pianos were expensive, so I was actually looking to buy a keyboard, but it really wouldn't have been the same as owning a piano. I was dying to have a piano. So my mom came up with an idea...

There are a lot of pianos at the school she teaches at. Many of the classrooms have their own piano, and the school hall has one too. There was one disused piano sitting in a corridor outside of the music room. The music room was being converted into an office, you see.

Now, my mom is good friends with the headmistress and deputy headmaster. Knowing that I wanted a piano, my mom approached the heads and asked if she could take the piano outside the music room home, and they said yes.

But we had to be really sneaky about it. None of the other teachers could know that we were taking the piano, otherwise they would think my mom was getting special favours (well...she was.) The teachers there are really bitter about these sorts of things.

So on the first day of holidays, when no one else was at the school, my dad brought his bakkie and a few of his workers (he's in the construction industry.) Because the music room was upstairs, we had to get the piano downstairs to the bakkie. It was nerve-wracking to watch.

Now, this is the interesting part. Because the school is owned by nuns, the piano I took actually belongs to the nuns. They did not give my mom permission to take it home.

So basically, we stole the piano from the nuns. I'm definitely going to Hell :/

This post is a bit premature (since I can't show you what I have yet) and I apologize, but I was just too excited about this not to share;
During the last week I thought about buying a guitar, probably classical, no specific idea in mind. Earlier today I decided to make this idea a reality. As I am on a tight budget (and can't afford to "waste" money on something I might not enjoy) I didn't want to spend more than a couple of hundred bucks on it so I decided to go check out the local Cash Crusaders. On my way there I gave my buddy, an antique dealer, a call. As it happens he was at some ou ballie's house who was busy with a house-clearance sale and he overheard our conversation. He then pulled an old Yamaha from a box somewhere and offered it to my friend for ONLY R100!!
I still need to see it though, but I doubt he would have bought something that was in bad shape. I will post a pic here along with any other details I can get from the "tag" on it (if it is even still there).
I hope to have this bargain in my hands some time tomorrow, will let you know!

Ok, I finally got the guitar. It's very basic, but for the R100 that I paid it is awesome! The prices I saw online for it ranged from about $159 to $249 new...

http://data.yamaha.jp/sdb/local/products/images/8803/12001/8803_12001_1.jpg

I've been practicing chords all day and my fingers are starting to hurt a bit :P

One thing that has been great is the tuner I downloaded for my phone (gStrings - Tuner for Android) (http://www.androidfreeware.net/download-gstrings-tuner.html). Just search the market for it to get the latest version and make sure to change the settings to "guitar" as it might be set on a different stringed instrument.

The other app that is great for a beginner is Chordboard (http://www.androlib.com/android.application.com-flatlandsapps-chordboard-qqwCz.aspx). It shows the finger placement for the basic chords from A to G in minor, major, 7, minor7 and major7.

Got her beginning of last year at Cash Crusaders with a high-quality amp for R500. They had no idea what they were selling, I've been told it would be worth around R3000 new. Haven't had that verified yet though, but I know its worth more than R500!

Hm. This thread reminded me of something, unfortunately there is no music recording thread of any sort, so I figured I'd drop it here.

I've been using my laptop's mic to record some of my doodles and mix them up with Audacity. So I went out and bought a proper mic, unfortunately it seems to only be recording from the left channel on Audacity when I plug it in. Not too sure how to get it to record on stereo, anybody have any experience with it?

Going to post a few pics of my Takamine and my new Keyboard once I get home. Keep forgetting to snap pics of them.

Also, does anybody feel we should have a "Share your music" thread so we can upload some of our recordings. Don't exactly want to fire one up if I'm going to be the only one posting my tracks, since I'm not exactly on par with some of the other musicians here.

Use Reaper rather than audacity, works very well. We just used it to record my brothers application for a music varsity overseas:

Great! I've been looking for a free editor for a while now. Audacity was the closest I could find. Will puzzle it once I get home.

Thanks!

It would be cool if some of the more talented guys here could start a collaboration for fun.
First guy can upload a simple song or beat or something, then the next guy can add another instrument, and then voice and so on and so on...

I am already doing that with somebody:)

I know we have a ton of guitar nuts here, so I figured this is a good place to ask.

I've been thinking about performing surgery on my Squier Bullet Strat (SSS). Specifically, replacing the bridge single coil pickup with a humbucker to get some fatter sounds for all the epic heavy metal I imagine myself playing when I stop sucking. I'm handy enough in the woodworking and electronics departments, so that's not really an issue for me, but is this a good idea? Can I utterly **** up my guitar if everything isn't perfectly aligned? Will this give me, I guess, deeper sounds for playing metal (likely combined with some fatter strings(?))? If this is a good idea, where do I go to get myself something decent?

Nice idea, and a relatively inexpensive guitar like a Squier is a good, safe ground to learn on. Machine is probably the best user to give advice on this kinda thing, but I'll give a few quick thoughts:

1. Yes, a humbucker will give you a more metal sound, providing you get the right one. But don't go too crazy and buy an expensive one. A cheap EMG or similar will suit just fine.
2. The strats have a fixed bridge, so changing string gauge shouldn't be an issue. I know you want to go heavier, so I'd recommend 10 gauge, although you may want to stick with 9 for a while for the sake of ease of play. The only potential problem you may run into is setting the intenation, but your strat shouldn't be too sensitive.
3. From what I've gathered, you don't need to worry about the alignment of the humbucker to a crazy degree. Double check with a quick google though.

What distortion and amp are you using? Doesn't help going crazy with body mods if you're not gonna put it through decent processing. For example, if you've got a Boss Metalzone, no mod will make your guitar sound more metal until you've got an EQ pedal in the chain.

EDIT: As for my instrument:

Ta for the reply. At least I know I'm not insane.

I'm using a Behringer V-Tone GMX210 (http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/GMX210.aspx) (old, but I got it for a good price) with its built-in distortion, and a Zoom 707 II (http://www.zoom.co.jp/english/products/707ii/) (probably older, but I got it for free) effects pedal when I feel like messing around.

I have no idea if either are any good. I get the impression that the pedal is a bit gimmicky, but the amp seems to be fairly decent.

I snapped my high E string so I'm in the market for a new set anyway. I think I'm down with 10s.

I've never seen that model Razorback before. Lovely axe man, congrats! I've demo'd them before, and I found their tone to be a bit thin, even when using the bridge pups. I see yours has EMGs in though, which should sort that out, as the older Razorbacks had the Seymour Duncan toaster tops.

You HAVE to post up a recording with it though, you know that right? :P

Also, horny guitars FTFW!

It's the Dime Slime. They discontinued it and now make the Slimebolt (http://www.deanguitars.com/dean_winter_09/Razorback_Slimebolt.htm) (which is great, but it's got double Humbuckers, so it doesn't sound as full and warm).

I'll post something in a bit :D

Those bridge pups were the ones I was referring to in the previous post. They're very, very thin, which is suited to Dime's style of playing or Scandinavian death, but not many other forms of guitar music.

I'm still rocking the same gear, except I've added a Line 6 GX recording device to my setup, which has probably been the best guitar-related purchase I've ever made. It's not expensive at all for a recording device (got mine for roundabout R1100) and it comes with fully licensed PODFarm, RiffWorks and Ableton software. It's a fantastic tool, and anyone looking at doing some recording should get one.

I never learned Guitar, but I did make music using Turntables & Sequencer. At one point, I used to get stopped for autographs in Bristol (1990's UK), but then I stopped to pursue other ventures. I still dabble with sequencing & remixing for fun, but that's all.

After what feels like years of trying to find just the right Gibson for me, I found this beauty from keymusic.com in Belgium and had her delivered to the UK for me. Had the chance to give her a bit of a run-around yesterday, and hell is she a player. It has a 50s neck, which is chunkier than I'm used to, but encourages a bit more patience and really working the notes instead of flying up and down the fretboard with little consideration for melody.

And some amazing tone as well. A lot of clarity, and a rich midrange. Perhaps a touch less bass than I expected, but I'm sure I'll sort that out with getting the amp and pedal settings right.

I've had some issues with tuning stability though, particularly when really getting into some heavy bending on the G. My tech has recommended changing the saddle and nut, but I'll wait a few months before considering any tinkering I think.

The pics I have are a bit too big, so I'll stick the links in for now:

What an instrument! Congrants and enjoy it! It looks amazing and that is my favourite guitar shape.
