I wasn't, but when you read something that says 'At the end of the movie he did this and that guy pulled out super awesome secret weapon that was a complete surprise except I've just told you so it won't be and then he did that', I get annoyed. :)

I wasn't aware that he is an alien, but regardless, given that he looks the same as all the others, and they're supposedly meant to be Japanese, it leads one to suspect that the author intended him to, y'know, 'be Japanese'. As far as I am aware, the author is Japanese himself.

I'm not surprised by the film's apparent awfulness though. From what I understand about the original anime, it wasn't going to work as a live action film no matter what you did or who you cast.

It's also hardly surprising that they're making it, considering how popular the franchise is. Sad as it may seem, most of the people who hold the power and the purse-strings in the movie-making world are businessmen, not artists.

I don't care about the original material, so I suppose it's easier for me to just ignore it, but I'd advise (plead with?) you to try and do the same, because to be honest, I'm frankly sick of people bemoaning how a movie is nothing like its source-material (see 99% of Watchmen reviews on the internet), thereby ignoring what it is, and focusing on what they think it should be. This makes for boring, and frankly rather pointless reviews, which seems like nothing more than mental masturbation...

I dont think the movie's going to win any awards, and I dont expect it to be great either. How on earth can you make a live action thats better than the anime? Most people have tried, and safe to say most live actions have failed.

And its a pity that I can only see more of these movies being done. This is part of the Dragonball series where Goku only knows KAO KEN (his maximum power-up level) and where Piccolo is still his evol self. There's still a huge wealth of the storyline left for them to destroy, and how on earth will they get the Super Saiyan look right?

And, by extension, the fans of those Mangaka's then have large amounts of respect for their influences.

Actually, I disagree with that sentiment. Being a graphic novel, the Watchmen was actually very easy to translate into a movie, with the emphasis on getting the look, storyline, and feel of the movie just right. The action was already there, and everything was completely doable in real life.

With DBZ, its a completely different medium, being an anime, and trying to make a live-action of something that's already been adapted solely for the medium its presented in is going to result in some pretty stupid movies. Face it, no live-action movie is ever going to top, or replicate, the awesomeness that was Goku and Majin-Vegeta's fight at the beginning of the Buu series, and it'll stay that way for a very long time...

Woah there. Assuming that anything is an easy transition to screen is a big mistake. Look at The Da Vinci Code. When I first heard it was being made into a film, I thought: how could it possibly go wrong? The damn book sure read like a screenplay; I figured they'd just have to translate it directly to screen and it would be awesome.

And yet the film was a huge pile of bollocks.

Because you can't translate directly from page to screen. Things that work on paper don't necessarily work on celluloid. Things invariably have to change.

What make a great film? There are many factors. A good story, a good script, great direction, art direction, cinematography, the list goes on. Just as you can take great subject matter and make a crap film, you can also take crap subject matter and make a great one. The medium of the original doesn't really come into the equation, so, for example, the way characters fight in an anime doesn't necessarily have to be copied in real life - they can find another way for them to fight that's equally as entertaining, but different. One can only wait and see.

Although frankly I think the DBZ film will be absolutely horrendous.

Oddly enough, I saw the Live actionJapanese version on DVD tonight(older obviously) and man did I laugh at the pile of **** it was! :D

None-theless, I tend to agree. It's going to be a ****ty movie.
