Agreed.

I sometimes wonder who gets these design jobs... It's a pity really, I'm sure they payed a lot of money to do these, and there are some seriously talented design firms in this country. There's some more of that terminal mis-management this country suffers from.

Do you watch football at all Brazed?

Dude WTF. This thread has nothing to do with stadiums. These are posters for the 2010 world cup.

I quite like them, but it seems they don't all fit together, like their done by different artists or something.

The P.E.; Nelspruit and JHB ones are the best IMO. But ultimately I would have liked art that was recognisably South African.

I think Rustenburg is only one that kind of is OK. Still far from great though.

And the Durban one looks like a municipal announcement poster; Beware the rattlesnakes in the public fountains.

I'm going to guess it is some empowerment firm. Take a look at the fiasco that was our official Olympic garb.

Yeah at last Nelspruit gets recognised for something other than the town on the way to the Kruger Park, but our stadium is not really on track as they say

I don't prefer any of the above, maybe as a last resort, the PE design but I would have chosen different colours.

I made a fun and very simplistic WC postcard (http://www.heksie.com/photos/Anisoccercup.gif) for Cape Town a while ago.

Yeah, I was thinking along the same lines. It's sad and ridiculous... for ****s sake! Give it to someone who can do the job right. And I don't mean only white people, there are some real talented black designers too, but they won't get the job because they aren't in cahoots with the ANC, or they work with too many white guys (which is usually the case).

Hmm, since we have a lot of wonderful designers on this forum, how about you design an alternative and request the organizers commission you to do the work? ^_^

I prefer the Port Elizabeth one, the grass consisting with people is a great idea, like the backround color and net looks cool. The ball could of been better though. That's my opinion though.

The Rustenburg one is the worst of them all. Unimaginative and boring to look at.

Johannesburg one not too bad either.

Looking at them again, what makes them so God-awful is the complete lack of continuity. Each one could be promoting something different.

The colours are also dull and the pictures uninspiring. It really is an utter disgrace that this filth gets defecated onto the world stage.

I just found it very funny that the designers of the posters seem to think they need to add musical notes coming out of the Vuvuzela's, like it's some kind of flute - clearly they have not heard those ****ing things in action.

I'm still interested (if not perturbed) at the use of the entire continent to symbolize South Africa. There are quite a large amount of people that believe that Africa is country (Lara in Tomb Raider Legends is guilty of this :P), and it's not entirely their own fault, seeing as we propagate that idea ourselves. The 2010 advertising isn't the first to do that at all, it's been going on for years. It all falls into the interesting identity crisis that this country suffers from.

LOL, that had me laughing. Yeah, I don't get why they are even promoting the use of them... Sure, it's an African tradition for the local games, but damn... I can see tourists getting really peeved off and complaining - hopefully instilling a ban. They sound awful.

They remind me of kids who get hold of a little whistle or something similar and then blast the same note over and over again (much to their delight)... it gets really old - really fast.

You guys really should learn about taste.

Yes, I hate the Vulu whatevers. But really, thats what makes Africa unique... have you ever seen those african sculptures of the black dude sitting smoking his pipe. I wouldn't accept one as a gift nevermind buy one, but for some or other reason it's a tourist crave.

Imo, if the tourists want's it and their willing to buy it, then who says we can't sell it, and make bucket loads of money in the process.

And also sorry to dissapoint you but it seems there are actually people organizing a vulve.. whatch-ma-call-it "choir" of some sort, especially for 2010 and the tourist(s). I believe they are going to teach the tourist to play it by using colour. Don't know the exact details.

What? I'd say thinking the Vuvuzela sounds like ****, is a sign of good taste.

Look, I understand it's an South African tradition and all that stuff, but that still doesn't change the fact that its a monotonous, irritating ****ing racket. The sculpture of the black man sitting smoking his pipe doesn't irritate me in the slightest, it's art, and music can be art too, there is loads of traditional African music that the tourists would love to hear and see performances of. A rowdy bunch of hooligans blowing on vuvuzelas is not art, its not music, its not anything really but a noise.

For sure, it'll be exciting and new for the tourists for maybe ten minutes, then the novelty wears off, then we see some unhappy foreigners who paid a crap-load of money (in these struggling economic times, might I add) to sit through football matches with a brain-grinding monotonous ****ing noise in their ears.

Well perhaps the establishing of the "choir by colour" might change it into "art". Who knows odder things have happened before.

I think you might be suprised at people especially tourists in any other country wants. I know about kids in Aus, that would DIE for one of those "makeshift" toy-cars made from cocacola cans and other rubbish.

They think it's the best thing in the world.

It's just how it works, it's the novelty of the item that counts not the physical attributes of the object in question. Gotta love novelties.

now im very confused... i understand that africA has plenty of diversity and all that... but these poseter have absolutely no core theme, yes the soccer... but thats all. I agree that the citites must eac portray themselves, but there is no central bran as such. for example SA or the Fifa Theme.

and genrally they all suck, Neslpruit and JHB are kind cool. Again though, why does that **** heap of Horn have to represent JHB?

I thought some of them were good. I'd like to see what it would look like if they grabbed the best poster, polished it off a bit and replaced the others with something more similar in artistic style. Would probably greatly raise the average person's opinion of the overall work. It would also make it easier to crit the work without writing an entire essay. :P

I really don't think they're that bad at all. The first thing I thought when I looked at them was how much the style looks like something out of Soweto, or something that you would find painted on taxis. I don't know if any of you have actually been into the major townships, but that's the kind of artistic style they have, bright, colourful and vibrant. Even Rustenburg's rather bland design has its intricacies...

Personally I think that the apprehension the posters are receiving here, comes from them not really representing a culturistic style we're familiar/fond with, you know, being mostly middle-income white folk (for the most part, I know there are exceptions).

Honestly, when I look at them, I think, this is South African soccer, through and through. It's a clash of different styles, just like this country is a clash of different cultures. I like it.

to some extent a can agree with what your saying, howver the artistic styles of townships? WTF? there is nothing there that we as a country should be showing off. The fact that there is actually talent and ability for something greater yes, but not the actual feal of a township, there a very unhealthy and dangerous townships, even soweto as muh as its been cleaned up is still very dodge.

My point being is that if this encouraged to the rourists it could lead to some serious damage...

again i say there is talent, but is this what what we want to represent SA?

Um, I think perhaps you missed my point a bit.

The 'township' style is far more representative of South Africa than, say, what most of us here would agree looks good. While I know why everyone here would think that something else might be better, I'm willing to guess that those other styles we'd much prefer, would be more in line with what, oh I don't know, America or the UK would be able to produce.

There's no denying that, for better or worse, what we see here is distinctly 'South African'.

As for what you mention about "is this what we want to represent SA?". Er, sorry to break it to you, but the majority of the world only know South Africa as townships and rural land :/ I fail to see how it's relevant to this topic? No matter how the posters look, the facts of danger and such are there.

They don't say "the whole of South Africa is a township" - they're merely showing the style of a nation which is definitely not made up of a majority of white middle-income households living in suburbia.

I think everyone is being too focused on what's wrong with the posters and how they could be better and what backward style they believe it depicts - and not really paying much heed to the fact that that's the actual style our soccer communities actually display. South African, hell, African soccer culture isn't the same as European football culture, and I really think that these posters (while not exactly my cup of tea for the most part) depicts that.

Their style made me think of this (http://www.soweto-funtours.co.za/images/gallery/Soweto/images/Power%20Station%201_jpg.jpg)and this (http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/0an31ZY19Z0i7/340x.jpg). It's a colourful, 'unrefined' culture. I think it's brilliant, and I don't even like soccer.

I'm not saying they're world-class works of art. But they're representing the culture the sport has in this country fairly accurately.

Nandrew
03-02-2009, 09:19 AM
I still think that in terms of look and feel, the posters should be internally consistent. I appreciate the idea that some of them radiate the African vibe rather well, but a few still make me **** my head and wonder why they're in there, or what they have to do with "African ideas" at all.

Consider Pretoria's poster. It has what I feel would be a lovely colour scheme, but its "Africanisation" is rather crudely limited to literal depictions of the continent, landmarks and soccer images. If you gave me the same poster and put in a silhouette of South America or Europe, I'd barely be able to comment beyond the fact that it's still an uninspired poster.

Is Rustenburg any good? Well, I honestly wouldn't be able to tell unless I got a look at a larger image. For now, it looks like a generic poster with a rather average choice of background colour.

The better posters convey the vibe that you're trying to explain, I feel, and I still advocate that a few of them be redone to adopt the style of the better ones. I don't mind the "raw" look, but I feel that the set could benefit from some internal stylistic integrity.

Q-Man
03-02-2009, 01:18 PM
I guess it boils down to personal preference (as it always does when it comes to stuff like this). You feel that it needs internal consistency, whereas I find the blatant differences in style a more accurate depiction of the culture itself.

Just note, I'm not saying that you're wrong and that I'm right. I admit that they're not much to look at, and I don't particularly like some of the styles depicted (as I have mentioned) - but, in context of the culture, I think it works.

Higushi
03-02-2009, 02:50 PM
I personally think that they could have done a lot better, I mean this is the Fifa World Cup (The most watched sport event in the world). I think that even with a higher degree of quality they would have been able to capture the "township" culture you refer too (and most probably capture it even better) - I don't see bad (ugly) design as being a needed ingredient in the mix.

The African theme that you like so much in these posters would definitely be a prerequisite for any design firm who would take the job. I see these posters as being detrimental to the image of South African art, and as Nandrew put it, they have a rather "uninspired" feel to them.
