    Default HD 4770 presentation leaks

RV740 40nm spells trouble for Greenvidia

Presentation slides for ATI?s upcoming 40nm RV740-based HD 4770 have leaked, and are suggesting that this card will be the king of the $99 turf for a while.

The reasons for this are plenty ? the performance you get for this money used to cost a small fortune a couple of years back, and it seems ATI has developed a taste for delivering excellent goods for low buck.

The slides show the HD 4770 beating the 8800GT/9800GT at some pretty high resolutions, and considering that 9800GT costs anywhere between $120-140, Nvidia will be in a world of pain when it comes to price adjustments.

You can check out the slides here.

    Competition is good.

    I have a Nvidia 9800 Gt OC...

    Soon I will have a HD 4770... :)

No, joking. I want to see some benchmarks between the 9800 and 4770 before I make up my mind. Benchmarks like 3dmark 2006, Crysis etc.
Ati is busy making some awesome cards for awesome prices.

I doubt it'll be worth upgrading. The minimum upgrade you should do is a 4850/4870.

wil this card be good for a nice low power entertainment setup?

For that I'd rather recommend the 4870 or the 4650. The 4770 requires external power, while the 4670 doesn't.

If you're looking for a purely entertainment centre based card (not for playing games) I can recommend the ATI HD4350.

It retails for roughly R550. Has all the hardware acceleration for video playback for the most common codecs and the usual integrated HD audio that the HD4xxx series cards have. You can find low-profile and silenced versions of the card. It does run a bit hot though, even when the card is not working hard (don't know why, since the core clock drops to about 110MHz when the card is idle).

(A little off topic there, sorry).

Seems like a epic bang for buck card, and also great market research by AMD. Nothing like some good ol' competition to bring the green giant's prices back down to earth.
