[Solved] FileZilla

Hi guys

It occured to me, while building my website (via webs.com - yes i'm cheap) that i could use FileZilla to upload my files. The only problem is that I cannot get FileZilla to connect to www.webs.com.

What I wanted to know, is how do I get it to connect to freewebs.

Under server type: FTP - file transfer protocol
Under host i have: www.webs.com
Under user: (i have my user name)
Under password: (I have my pass)

my user name and pass is what I would use to logon to the freewebs site...

much help would be appreciated - if what I am trying to do is even possible...

Anyway...

I have a feeling that webs.com doesn't allow for FTP connections through a 3rd-party application like FileZilla. What error are you getting exactly?

If you have absolutely no luck with this, and I suspect that may be the case, have a look at some entry-level, paid, hosting packages. Most ISPs can organise a decent package for under R50 a month - hardly something to break the bank.

I don't think it allows ftp, i did read on other forums that you had to pay for a premium account. But I just wanted to know if there was another way...

Try using ftp.webs.com

If I use www I get

Connection attempt failed with "ECONNREFUSED - Connection refused by server".

If I use ftp I get

530 Login authentication failed

but that's because I don't have a valid account

can anyone give me a link to a cheap/affordable website that can host my website (such as freewebs) except i'm willing to pay roughly R50/m

please - it must be a co.za domain and i wont be needing more than 50mb

Those packages look a little on the crap side, to be honest. Not really a hell of a lot of storage space or bandwidth. If you don't some right with anything else, however, they should suffice as long as you're not expecting too much traffic.

Normally I'd recommend Webfirms, as their packages tend to include a free domain and unlimited bandwidth, but their site is being screwy at the moment. Maybe fire off an email to them to see what exactly their entry-level Unix package entails.

It's the same kind of bandwidth that you get for ADSL users. Whenever a user browses your website, downloads images or files or does anything with it, bandwidth is 'used up'. So, for example, if your site weighs in at a total of 3MB, including images, whenever a user browses the entire site they will use up 3MB of your total bandwidth. File caching and whatnot comes in to alleviate this a fair bit, however. If you're expecting lots of people to visit your site, your site will need plenty of bandwidth, especially if you're using a lot of images or fancy things like Flash.

In general, you'll get two types of bandwidth: Local and international. Local bandwidth is faster for SA users but is more expensive (as the physical servers your site is stored on will be located in SA), whereas international is generally slower but loads cheaper. If you're with a decent service provider, however, the speed difference between the two is quite small. Local bandwidth is also great for visitors to your site with ADSL who have local access on top of their international - as they can still browse your site if they're capped.

I've used Serve-Hosting for my Dad's work. Quite easy to setup, allows ftp uploading of your site, and they registered a .co.za domain for R55, which is R5 more than what it would cost you to do it privately.

Host4Africa also seem to have some decent deals, depending on what you're looking for, with (what I assume) is infinite bandwidth.

Hetzner has some great deals, but be sure you don't tie yourself into any sort of a contract with them. We're using them for hosting these forums and the website and (needless to say), things get a little sluggish sometimes.
