(I haven't been on in a while, so if this has already been discussed excuse me coz I couldn't find it on the forum)


Anyhoo, I found this opinion quite interesting. I was also an "original" gamer but I'm far more casual these days and I enjoy finding new people to play with. But I do understand the frustration, it happens in any hobby/interest that once had a small population then suddenly was jumped upon by people looking to market it and make money...

I see the same thing happening with bikers these days and it infuriates me. Also, the same thing happened to tattoos.

I think the major problem here is that people have defined themselves so long as those "social outcasts" and "gamers" that having the definition of one of these changed affects how they describe themselves. Because, if you cannot define yourself as you've always defined yourself, who are you? What are you? What is your role? Where do you fit?

Naturally, it would be better to just not define yourself socially. You're a unique individual. That's really the only thing that matters.

My family had a sega...master system until my brother got a ps1(which i wasn't allowed to play :( ) then i got my own, ever since then (and you know this panicore) people have been giving me crap ever since. Now some of those same people play a little cod4 and think they're hardcore until i pwn them. Um...what's my point...oh yes, it was all that hating that gave me the motivation to be a better gamer and i'm sure it's the same for some of you. Damn...i had another point...i forgot so i'll end by saying gamers are awesome

I wasn't planning on commenting on this thread, as I can no longer call myself hardcore. Though I never did, I think mainstream will be the lifeblood of the hardcore blockbuster.

Push comes to shove, games are there to have fun, that's the reason people take the time and effort to make games. Games shouldn't be a tool to be used by the self proclaimed "hardcore gamer" to inflate their ego's.

So what if more people are playing Wii Sports or whatever else? It can only be a healthy thing for the gaming industry.

Remember, everyone started somewhere, besides, Wii is fun, no matter how "n00b" or "Softcore" it is.

Reason being: It doesn't matter how long you've been playing the guitar, the point is that you are a person who plays it, and therefore, a guitarist.

The fact that they play games regularly, or even seldom, is what makes them a gamer. Not how long they've been playing games or what type of games they play.

AH but notice I say you have to have your Roots in gaming OR Just see it as a hobby rather than a awy to pass some time when you have nothing better ro do by the way did you notice the "or". you dont need both the requirements just one.

Oh and when you say purest of the pure it makes me sound Like an Aryan Nazi zombie so I apologize for that.

We as South Africans should know that majority rules... There's big money in casual gaming at the moment and they will milk it as long as possible.

The point is I know many people who spent money on their Wii consoles and none of them still use it. The worst part being that they will never try out any of the titles I've recently seen that are actually worth more than the cases they're in - House of the Dead/Mad World/Conduit... Instead they threw their money at a bunch of these party and mini games (of which many are indie and flash games that I've played for free before) that have about 10 min play value and maybe another 20 min when showing it to guests and then never see light again.

So imo they are of no use to the industry unless you condone developers continuing to cater for these 'gamers' that have no intent of actually pushing them to create better titles but instead encourage mediocre and shallow games.

Another thing, "hard core" gamers don't post on forums, they are too busy playing games. With the exception of Azimuth naturally. I have this theory that her soul left her body and possessed the internet, she still haunts this site you know.

My thoughts on this topic: "hard core" is just some term people use when they want to be exclusive. That is why, when a person claims to be hard core, they allways get so much flak. They are busy blowing their own trumpets. The "Hard Core" gamer doesn't exist, there are people that like games more than others, or a certain type of game more than others. There are also people that perform better than others in games. But the definition of "the hard core gamer" is an elusive one. The term "hard core" is a flaky one.
