I'm very much a Greatest hits lover, but I know many people don't normally see them as good "albums" as such, just a CD with good songs on. From that perspective I have nothing to really offer.

Aside from all the obvious ones (most of which have already been mentioned), I'd like to contribute to the list. My list consists primarily of artists/genres from a different layers of the complex modern music industry so a few of them might seem unheard of, but I assure ya'll that they have achieved legendary status. It's a different spin but for any music lover, I consider these to be essential:

    Sigur R?s - ?g?tis Byrjun
    The Beatles - Abbey Road
Acid Mothers Temple - La N?via
Boards of Canada - The Campfire Headphase
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots
    Slint - Spiderland
    Pink Floyd - Animals
    Mogwai - Young Team
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven
    Damien Rice - O
    Boris - Pink
Brian Eno - Ambient 1 - Music For Airports
    Eluvium - Copia
Explosions in the Sky - The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place

Also, I concur with a lot of the albums mentioned. Especially those mentioned by .dB: GZA, the Wu, Jimi, MJ, Tool, and off course Outkast.
