Thread: Citi Golf retires

    Default Citi Golf retires

There will be no more nights on the town for the Citi Golf.

The 31-year old on Monday retired her little black dress officially as Volkswagen of South Africa (VWSA) announced that it would no longer produce the entry-level hatchback at its Uitenhage plant, in the Eastern Cape.

However, more than 517 000 units later, the A1, of Golf 1 ? or as it became better known, the Citi Golf ? will next year be replaced with a new entry-level vehicle, said VWSA MD Dave Powels, addressing a media conference in Midrand.

But, he added, it would be ?difficult to compete on a R87 000 level, so don't expect it to be down at that level ? but, yes, we will launch an entry level car.

?Next year, we will be launching into the market a comprehensive range of products to compete in all major segments of the market.?

The Citi Golf's replacement will be announced in the first quarter of next year, with the local plant currently gearing up for its production, as well as that of the Polo, at a cost of R3-billion.

Ironically, the continued existence of the Golf 1 was motivated by price, as VWSA viewed the heftier price tag of the newly-launched Golf 2, or Jumbo Golf, in the 1980s as prohibitive to the company's success in the entry-level market.

Hence, the local arm of the German manufacturer designed, with the blessing of its parent company and some creative advertising gurus, the new and truly South African Citi Golf (sold at R 7 600) to run as an entry-level vehicle alongside the new, much pricier Golf range, which had since evolved into the Golf 6.

Powels noted that the demise of the Citi Golf was not brought about by any stuttering in demand.

?There is still demand, but it is no longer economically viable to produce any platform that has a production level of 20 000 to 25 000 units a year. There is no economies of scale for us or our [component] suppliers.?

The introduction of the Automotive Production and Development Programme in 2013 to replace government's current support programme, the Motor Industry Development Programme, will provide incentives to companies able to produce 50 000 units a year or more, preferably on the same platform.

In July this year, VWSA still sold more than 1 600 Citi Golf's for the month ? this after 1980s Citi Golf production estimates had been placed at 300 units a month, with the product's life-cycle predicted at roughly three to five years.

Powels said secondary reasons for halting more than 30 years of Citi Golf production ? the vehicle exists only in South Africa ? were also driven by customer expectations, especially in terms of safety and technology.

He said customer demands were growing increasingly sophisticated, and that the Citi Golf could no longer keep up with these demands.

?It is an old technology platform.?

Powels noted that VWSA would continue to support and service all Citi Golfs, for ?as many years as it takes?.

With local content at roughly 90%, Powels said most Citi Golf component suppliers would be able to provide VWSA with components for other models, but that a ?handful of suppliers? would not be able to continue doing business with the company.

However, he believed they could still provide parts to other vehicle manufacturers, and that none of them would close their doors as a result of the Citi Golf's demise.

The closing of the Citi production line had also not resulted in any job losses, added Powels.

    LAST CHANCE . . .

South Africans who still wished to own a Citi Golf could buy one until the start of next year.

To celebrate the end of the Citi Golf, which far outgunned Beetle production at Uitenhage, VWSA branded the last thousand Citi Golf's which were produced as Mk1 models, or Mark 1, harking back to its introduction to the local motoring scene.

Each car is individually numbered, and will be sold at R113 500.

The Mk1 comes with a 1,6 l engine, sports seat with partial leather, a golf ball gear knob, a radio and CD player, an airbag, red stitching detail, lowered suspension, twin exhausts and tinted glass all around.

To celebrate the end of the South African icon, Citi 001 (the last one produced in August already) would travel around the country, offering the public the opportunity to provide it with some body art in the form of signatures.

Citi 003 will be auctioned on the Bid or Buy web-site, with the proceeds to go to charity.

Two of the last produced Citi Mk1 units will join other Volkswagen Classic cars that are on permanent display at the Autostadt, the Volkswagen Group Museum and Brand Expo in Wolfsburg, Germany, and at the Volkswagen AutoPavillion Brand heritage centre, in Uitenhage.
About 26 years too late i think.

I am still driving a Citi (albeit one of the newer ones) and it has probably been one of my favourite cars that I have owned.

Our company's Industrial Engineer showed me on a new Citi Golf we got as an hire car (we were on a business trip) how the panels have blemishes and are out of shape in some places. This is because the original press molds that they were still using was so worn out.

It's amazing how in image concious SA this car survived so long. I guess that red, yellow, blue (not green!) ad was really effective.

Does mean that the Velo-Cities and the like will also be discontinued?

I'll probably be driving my City Golf til the wheels actually fall off.

Yip, they're all being discontinued. At least I can look on the bright side - I was gonna be selling my Golf soon. That will hopefully stabilize the prices for second-hand ones.

Good thing. I hate Citi Golfs. Back when my dad started looking to buy me a car I told my dad that he could buy me anything, even an old VW beetle, just as long as it wasn't a Citi Golf.

Why? :o Citi Golfs are fantastic - like Unos, they run virtually on air; unlike Unos, they won't crumple up into a 1cm baking tray in a light collision and turn everyone inside into hotdogs.

Sadly they are all going. The 'new, fancy, cool shaped' golf will stay, but no more 'cheap models'.

The whole plant in Uitenhage is being retooled, to build the replacement. Apperently VWSA want to align the models in SA with those of VW international.

This is a constant battle in my friend group. I am almost the only one that has never owned a golf, this is some more ammo for the debate that they suck. :P

I don't like them either, they drive like **** and I can never seem to find a comfortable place to sit. Anyway, I know they were good companions to some, so I will also salute.

I think I read somewhere that there are rumours that it will be replaced by the Volkswagen Fox (the Brasil version, not our silly version).

    Wikipedia
You would be correct. The rumour is either the Fox or the GTS. The problem is that both of those would cost more than the good old citi golf.

It doesn't make much sense to take away the cheapest car on the market in a time when few people have the spare cash to buy a fancier model...

I think they were having issues regarding emissions and safety standards in the old body shape. The additional costs were making it less profitable than Volkswagen would've liked.

I liked the Citi Golfs, but the older ones. It was a remembrance of a simpler time in motoring, when things were still made of metal primarily, and you could fix most of it with a basic set of spanners and screwdrivers (not to mention the occasional hammer).

That's what motoring really is about, y'know, actually feeling the connection between the steering wheel and the tyres, feeling the tension in the clutch cable, the oldschool stuff. I drive and old car, and I really don't like driving new cars at all, they're all too "mushy". That's why older cars didn't need radios and crap, you could just enjoy the drive, by actually experiencing the drive, not just trying to get from A to B. I havn't missed a radio once in my car, even when driving home from varsity ever single night on the most mundane road in the universe (N17), but when I'm in a new car, it really is very boring even with a radio.

Sure, if I get into a horrible accident, I probably will be turned into pink mush, but that's ok with me. Obviously when you have a family or passengers that drive with you regularly it makes a difference, but I'm 21, and still invincible :)

    This.

It annoys me so much that auto-manufacturers are hell bent on making expensive cars and not providing what a lot of people need, that is a car that can get them about in the city. But then again it might also be that most people want powerful cars to fuel their male ego and female egos.... I despair.

But some auto-manufacturers are going in the direction I approve of, the Tata-Nano!

Sure its got a puny engine, 2 cylinder SOHC petrol Bosch multi-point fuel injection (single injector) all aluminium 624 cc (38 cu in) and a top speed of just of 100km/h but then just look at the price.

July 17 2009, with a starting price of Rs 100,000, which is approximately equal to UK?1,360 or US$2,171, or R16 500, compare that to the next cheapest car on the market. :/ And it doesn't look half bad either.

I bought my wife a CitiStorm a year ago and bought a 1.6i CitiROX two weeks ago for myself and we had a nice little discussion as to why people hate golfs so much. Truth be told, it's because it's such an honest car and because no where else will you find better value for your money, people don't like admitting that when they drive in their overpriced cars.

I hate the fact that the industry has put so much pressure on VW to make the Golf safer or replace it altogether. All that the safety conscious industry does now is force car makers to make ridiculously expensive "safe" small cars. I cannot see the point of paying over a R100 000 for a 1.0L 3 cylinder Chevy Spark. No offense to those who have bought those, I don't blame you as there isn't really much choice in the matter. What you have now is a car, loaded with trick tech that can, at will, fail you. I bought myself a brand new Ford Fiesta about.......3 years ago, awesome car but that car has failed me three times, hundreds of miles from home. "Safer" than a Golf? Yeah sure it is. Am I likely to get fucking stabbed in the neck while stranded next to the freeway in the middle of the night? Most definitely. Safer? Fuck no.

My wife travels to Pretoria everyday to University and I wanted to buy her something that I know will not fail her and if it did, it could be fixed easily.

And I don't buy the whole "cars need air bags, ABS, EBD, ATC and ****". I haven't seen a major decrease in the road death toll, why? Because if you cannot drive, nothing will save you. Sure it does help, a lot, I'm not denying the obvious but I truly feel that in some cases it just makes matters worse. People drive a lot more recklessly now because they have all these safety features that protect them so yeah sure, I can go 200 down Mercury Rd because I have all the tech protecting me.

Screw you motoring industry and screw you VW for giving in to the pressure and killing a legend.

Being the advocate of affordable motoring that I am I have to say that I'm not sold on the Nano idea.

Firstly we aren't getting the same model as the Indians are getting for R16 500. Ours will be slightly different and retail in the region of R45 000 - R60 000, think Nintendo Wii. Still very cheap I have to agree. It is so cheap in fact that all the car manufacturers are fighting to stop Tata from selling the car here because it will kill car sales.

Secondly and this is my biggest problem with the Nano is that I fear it will be too affordable. Our roads are IMO already overcrowded and every Tom, **** and Sipho has bought a license. If the Nano deal does go through then I'm afraid we are going to have a couple of thousand more people who cannot even drive a shopping cart on our roads.

I see the good intentions Tata has and I admire them for grabbing the entire motoring industry by the balls but I fear that it could cause complete havoc on our roads.
