    Default Bandwidth

Hey, I'm a total noob to TF2 and steam, please can anyone tell me how much bandwidth TF2 uses, on average, and what kind of ping is ideal to look out for, as this is really the first online multiplayer game I've got. And any other tips about saving cap and stuff like that would be appriciated.

Yeah, but you see... When I'm at home, I want to play. I don't want to wait for the list to get refreshed. At this moment, I am at work. I don't want to work, so I ask people for server IPs. Thus, when I get home, I have the IPs and can start playing immediately.

Games of this ilk tend to use between 40 and 60Mb/hour. I could be wrong, but thats what it was for Battlefield2142 which also uses VOIP. Turning off VOIP might save you some bandwidth, but isn't as fun. Not blabbering away needlessly on your mic could help your bandwidth and your reputation.

Well TF2 uses +- 60Mb if I played like 5 hours. It might be more when there is updates available.
The Ideal ping would be between 0 and 80 ms ping. anything higher than 100 will start to irritate you and the people you play with.

Lol. I can still remember the good old modem days when a 200-300 ping was acceptable :D

    That makes sense. Here:

    IS TF Server 2: 196.38.180.114:27035
    IS TF Server 1: 196.38.180.114:27015
    SGS TF Server 1: 196.4.79.8:27017

Thanks for the replies so quick. are there any ways to find a regular server that has low ping? Like does the NAG group play often? If so how do I know which game it is. All the games I see on the list have 100+ ping, which is really annoying. Just seen new posts, how do I put in those IP's, and is an IP like a dedicated server or something?

Well, my cap finished last week so decided to give 56k a try. Getting average 200 ping and not having any problems playing. Seems i can only play on sgs though, my ping on IS ranges between 600 and 2 million. Not playable. Leaves me with only one server to play on, and its almost always full.

No, it wasn't. Which is why I wondered why you couldn't do it yourself, because I couldn't imagine a practical reason.

The servers I listed are the lowest ping locals. You go to 'Servers', right click and say 'Add IP address', either in the game or in Steam.

AFIAK playing with a high ping messes things up for the other players on the server. Which is why a lot of servers have rules that kick players pinging above 100. Incase you're wondering why people are giving you dirty looks.

Is it just me, or do some of the snipers on the SGS servers react too fast?

Also is it just me or is there a bit of lag on the IS?

Ack, if any of you saw me briefly join your game only to abandon it after some useless flailing about - connection issues. Sorry. And it was my first time playing. :(
