Thread: DVD and Blu-Ray?

  1. #1

    Default DVD and Blu-Ray?

I bought a Blu-Ray player at the beginning of last month, and have a couple of Blu-Ray movies and a rock concert. It is totally awesome and as I'm going along, I can't help but wonder if it would be worth it to get Blu-Ray versions of movies that I already own on DVD? The Dark Knight, for example is a movie which I think must be worth owning in an HD format, but I can't shake the feeling that it may be a waste of money to buy the Blu-Ray when I already own the DVD?

To the forumites who have Blu-Ray players or PS3's : Are there any movies of which you own in both DVD and Blu-Ray format? Is it worth it to get it on Blu-Ray if you already have it on DVD?

Speed Racer on Blu-ray is a must if you only have it on DVD. Beyond that, it's your personal choice. I just buy straight Blu-ray now, but I didn't feel the need to go re-buy what I have on DVD already, which is really very little.

The only duplicate I have is of The Fifth Element. The difference in picture quality is major, but the DVD version has better extra features. Go fig. :/

Otherwise, there are very few DVD movies I'll re-purchase on Blu-ray. The Lord of the Rings and the Star Wars films are exceptions to that... when they eventually make Blu-ray releases.

I bought Band of Brothers on Blu-ray despite already having the DVD, and I bought the Blu-ray of The Dark Knight, which came with a DVD version.

I have Starship Troopers on both formats and IMHO the Blue-Ray looks better. Colors are more pronounced, action more vivid etc.

Thats always going to be the case, he's just wondering whether its worth getting the Blu-ray on top of the DVD.

I own Serenity on both DVD and Blu-Ray and the BD version just totally kicks all kinds of ass, I've definitely considered getting a few other movies again in BD.

In the end though I only re bought Serenity for the massive amounts of extra features you got on the Blu-Ray version (which is also a big plus over the DVD versions sometimes)

I'm a complete geek when it comes to extra features though, I love watching every single interview and every single second of director and actor commentary.

Not always. In some cases the transition to hi-def wasn't that great. Especially with things that have a lot of CGI. But yeah, my answer was kinda stating the obvious. Sorry about that.

Another question: will I still be able to see the difference in picture quality between a BD and a DVD if I have a normal, non HD TV? I'm getting a PS3 soon, so I was just curious to know (sorry for borrowing your thread OnlyOneKenobi.)

As the films original version is stored on film (for bigger productions) I'm pretty sure there is no quality loss in the HD versions.

Not quality loss per se, just that CGI doesn't look that real when viewed in HD.

That's probably because you can see in more detail in Blu-Ray than in DVD.

I think The Dark Knight in Blu-Ray is excellent, but for comedies etc. just stick to your DVD's. Especially if you have an upscaler.
