Thread: Official internet discussion thread

So I'm really considering that WebAfrica 1MB Uncapped deal.

It's only about R100 more than the 384k MWEB uncapped we've got at the moment.

I'm just wondering if anyone here has experience with the package ?
I mostly want to get it to get better streaming and gaming done, I do download from time to time, enough to warrant an uncapped connection but not exactly excessive amounts.

Hmmm I see the rolling threshold is about 700MB per 6 hours or 11 Gig every 7 days, which is kinda steep I think, I'm not sure I won't use more than 11Gig every 7 days, you could easily burn through that one youtube alone in that amount of time if you wanted.

They said they puposefully made their FUP extremely strict and that when you do get throttled it's not that bad. I'd say give it a try.

yeah I read through the Fair use policy properly (finally found it on their website).

It does actually sound very reasonable, for instance between 12AM and 6AM it's pretty much free for all, and apparently the throttling won't exactly be horrible, something like 50 % - 80 % of max speed, which would still be faster than my usual 384k line.

I'm gonna give them a try and let you guys know how it goes :).

Fun thing with WebAfrica is that if you're not happy, you can cancel whenever you want. No contracts, no obligations. They're awesome. Except for web hosting.

On that note, I just sent through the request to upgrade my package to the home 4 meg uncapped and moving my adsl line to them as well for R300 p/m.

Yeah R300 p/m. for a service provider and the hardware and monthly from telkom incl. total!...{*unlimited and uncapped*} maybe this is more like the future...(*it is a fact that i still and allways had this so nothing new there to fork out some $ for*) i would surely upgrade if the systems here where i live would suddenly become compatible with mb/s speeds... dail'up is the only option here ... does one really need such fast and uncapped internet...{obvious}, but strage that i whom still have dail'up... notice that eveything nowdays is hogging or exploiting this>>> everyone that has a fast internet con type<> for bigger demos huge ier' patches ect...why is this? not the proper way for integration to the future i think ... just a thought.

The R300 p/m excludes any hardware, and is purely for the line rental. The Uncapped data package is another R599 a month, and even then it's not "unlimited", you are still severely shaped if you start abusing the system.

Also, you still running with dial-up makes you part of the severe minority. I'm very sad that Telkom is still selling dial-up to people, it's a chore to keep going and costs a fortune for what you get. We should all just simply run ADSL lines (even if it is only a 384 connection) to every home with a phone (you do need a phone line, after all), and sell uncapped data packages to all (shaped, of course). THAT is the way to move into the future, but we unfortunately don't have the infrastructure or support to maintain something like this.

    SOOO!

First day update from my new Webafrica 4 meg uncapped home solution. I moved my 384 line to WA as well and they upgraded it for me to a 10meg line but I only have the 4 meg uncapped so no 10 meg for me (but that is just fine). The waiting period is 1-14 days for the line transfer from telkom to WA and they did it in 12 (working) days. I'm not a quiet customer and moaned every single day, I must admit I was a bit dissapointed that they did not give me accurate estimates as to how long the line upgrade will still be. It was just always "we opened a ticket with telkom and are awaiting a reply" until this morning when the last time I asked they said I must switch my router on and off, when I restarted it was ON!

WAjeff from the WA forum was very helpful in this upgrade time and helped me and my webochondria with great regard.

On to the line and account...

I have heard from the feedback thread that some people are not happy but for the first day I'm ****ing estatic. I have downloaded over 2 gig since 2pm (Updates for pc, MS and all our Ipads[3]) while playing games. I must say my ping in games is not all that better from the 384 business uncapped we had (average 100 ping) now with no one downloading it is 65-75 ping and with someone downloading I have an average ping of 90 and 3 people downloading and me playing I have a ping on 90-100.

    So far so good.

    Kudos WebAfrica!

Exactly the same with me. I also moved from 384 to their 10meg line, and they also said "up to two weeks". It ended up taking 3. Not that I mind now though, they're quick, efficient and their service is solid and secure. I'm very happy with what I'm paying for at this time, and I hope everyone will receive the same service I've been receiving from them.

Just don't let them host your websites... :P

Phew been throttled for the first time. Thought it was going to be horrible but so far I have only been dropped to 2.9mbps not shabby at all. :)

    8-ta 10 Gig deal.

Considering I live in the middle of nowhere, it's actually not bad.

Any clue on how this would hold out on a local Battlefield 3 server?

I really want to buy the game, but if it's just going to pop to a ping of 250+ I'm not going to bother.

think your ping is fine. I don't think you'll get issues.

I went ought and bought myself an Huwei E367 and a 8ta sim card to test signal in my area (Woodstock, CT) before taking any contract out with them. Currently have 2 PC's connected, my Xbox and iPhone, and I have to say that I am seriously impressed. I was able to play BF 3 last night with no issues, it was completely playable.

There is just one catch though, the pre-paid 8ta service is piggy backing off the MTN network so I still don't know what the signal will be like if I take out the contract, as the post-paid service is on their own network.

Only the 2g uses MTN. If battlefield was playing fine there was no way you were using EDGE.

As Chev stated you were most likely on the h8ta network. Also if you take screenshots now with your tests and when you take out the contract and your experience changes from seriously impressed to super ticked off you can claim CPA and show the difference in the tests you did . No way that they will stop you from getting out of that contract,

I'm on mweb uncapped unshaped and only local sites are working and peer to peer programs like utorrent.

Is something going on today with the sea cables in this 3rd world country again?
