AFAIK, MWEB doesn't throttle you, they just shape certain ports. I've seen people on myBB claiming they downloaded 100+ GB so far without speed throttling. All the other companies on IS lines are the heavy throttlers (Afrihost, Axxess, those other people).

So when I got home Afrihost had already sorted out my internet. Tested it out and it was brilliant (this was during the Easter weekend so I presume there must have been high traffic with so many people off work).

Downloaded the Warhammer trial which is 1.2gb in about 1.5-2hrs. Thought it was pretty awesome so to do further testing I hooked it up to my Xbox and downloaded practically every demo on the Marketplace.

It downloads surprisingly faster on the Xbox with a 4.5gb download taking about 2hrs-2.5hrs, but perhaps that is due to the servers.

Unfortunately I did not get a speedtest.net while I was there but I'll make sure to take one next time.

Definately worth the money, and it worked out cheaper than Telkom by a longshot. (I used to have a 4gb 4MB account with Telkom). Nothing but praises about Afrihost from me so far! :)
Glad to see you're a happy Afrihost customer ^_^ They need more of those.

I've been hearing very bad things from Afrihost though, like that they throttle you to death after you reach 10 or 30GB.

Haven't experienced this yet myself. However, if I do notice a difference I'll be sure to post.

Yeah, apparently 10GB on 384DSL, and 30GB on 4Mb/s. Geomextrix himself can testify to this.

I know this question has been asked 100 times, but generally an explanation is asked. They always just end up leaving me with more questions.

So a simple easy yes/no question if you guys would be so kind as to answer it. Would I be able to game internationally (Things like MMO's, League of legends, HoN etc) and locally (BC2, MW2 etc.) with a decent ping on a shaped 512 line ? I'm talking during shaped hours, not after hours when the line is unshaped.

M-Webs official polic to to prioritise some ports over others when they are capacity strained. So your dirty torrent will be put on the back foot in the latter half of th month during the daytime. But your browsing and gaming should always be fine.

Yea same, I'm gonna change from SAOL. They giving me ****, random lag spikes all over the place, pings of 200+ on local servers 600+ on international ones. Can't play like this anymore. Hopefully mweb will be the answer. If it goes South ill just change to the 384k unshaped.

I'm planning to go with 512DSL at some point next month. For gaming, the 512 option is best. Of course, the 4Mb/s line is only R80 ish more, and Axxess have very tempting capped unshaped accounts.

I'm planning on going for the 20GB option until it expires or uncapped QOS levels even out.

Am currently in the migration process. Looking forward to playing without constantly having to check cap usage.

Well whenever I join my one clan-mate in MW2 IWNet sticks me in a foreign server so playing with Russians half the time. To be honest, the ping bar was always changing between red and yellow but it was really playable (Must say, Russians suck ass in MW2...) hey. Locally I have no hassles unless it's a bad host.

    that's on a 384k line.

TL;DR - So yes, their 512 will work. (More to the point than the previous answer)

With everyone jumping around maybe SAOL will give us loyal guys increased speed to 512 or even 1MB/s ;-)

Still no problems from them. Hope MWeb give you a better deal, dude.

Take it from someone who HAS a 512kbps line already. If you don't plan to host internet games, 512kbps is enough even for international games like MMO's and such. The same goes for local. So, in the end. YES

Wesley, just to clarify, will people living near football stadiums get their lines upgraded to Adsl2 first, and then everyone else? Or will areas around football stadiums be the only areas to get a line upgrade?

Everyone should get the upgrade eventually.

A final question before I (hopefully) get this.

Does Mweb make use of cables or do they use satelites. My dad gave me a brief explanation that if they use satelites there will obviosly be more lag.

Or am I asking the question wrong?

Why do isps offer 384DSL 512DSL and 4MBDSL and not for example 512DSL, 1MBDSL and 4MBDSL?Wouldn't those be much more worth while upgrading to?

Most likely because Telkom only offers 384,512 and 4096 speeds.

My isp has told me that the Mweb offer is for 1 line only. I have adsl at home and at my office which is 2km's away. Is this true that I would then need 2 separate Mweb accounts if I changed?
