Apparently the super sensitive capacitive screen on that phone is pretty sweet.
Let us know what you think of it when you get it. I hope you get it soon.

You can check out Coolsmartphone and Phandroid for suggestions. I haven't really followed the release of new phones lately, sorry.
I have the HTC Tattoo, but I think it is already discontinued and they aren't releasing any new updates for it, so I'm stuck with Android 1.6. Version 3.0 will be releasing soon, so I'm way behind now.

Have a look at the Droid X, The Motorola Milestone(might aging now too), and the Galaxy S.
But the main thing would be to look at the carrier that you prefer and see what kind of phones they have available and what the specials are that they are running...
Unfortunately South Africa is quite a few months behind the rest of the world when it comes to phone releases.

One thing I can say though is that once you have used Android you probably won't ever want to use any other mobile OS.

Just don't be disappointed with the number of apps that come standard on the phone, most of what you really need will have to be downloaded from the Android Market. Luckily everything that you require should be available for free. There are some real gems out there. When you actually do get a phone, start with the list that I provided somewhere else in this thread, it should help you quite a bit.

Keep us updated on what you are looking at, we might be able to give some advice or make suggestions.
    Happy hunting!

That Galaxy S really does look cool. The other one you can check out (only cause I kinda like HTC Sense) is the HTC Desire. It is a couple of months older than the Galaxy S, but it has very similar specs. Being a little bit older it might be a bit cheaper.

You probably won't buy a phone immediately tomorrow, so see what they have and then report back so you can be the envy of everyone here :-P

PS: I only realized now that the Droid X is still only a rumor, so ignore that one

EDIT- I looked at the specs of the Galaxy and the Desire again, and the Galaxy S is actually a bit better. It has a larger screen and more built-in storage space. It is probably the better choice of the two. The Desire is still an awesome phone and will definitely be cheaper. But I guess if money isn't a worry for you then go for the Galaxy S.

The Tablet does look cool, but I can't see myself making phone calls on such a huge device, it just isn't practical as a replacement for a phone.

What happened at Vodacom the other day? Have you made a decision or seen something there you like?

At least you know what multi-touch is and can educate the staff on it!

And so i did.. pointing out why it's so important for faster on screen typing, gaming and dual on screen analogue controls.. need less to say "Kolonade voda shop" felt very embarrassed when i told the sales person she was red in the face.

I told them to do a bit more research and gave her several useful online sources.

It's ridiculous that it was even necessary to educate them. They are supposed to be the ones that "wow" you with all the details of the product. They could very well lose many sales due to not knowing the details of the products they sell.
I had similar experiences when I inquired about Android handsets due to be released in SA. The sales people didn't know any of the phones I was referring to...
