    It's called whatsapp.

yeah, don't let BBM and all that fool you. Most Blackberry phones do not classify as smartphones. You will be much happier with an Android device, even a lower/mid-range device will beat the functionality of a BB.

For Whatsapp, just make sure your phone runs Android version 2.1 or higher.
The phone I have (HTC Tattoo) is one of those that was forgotten after 1.6 and hasn't received an official update in two years.

Recently, after dropping the phone when I got out of the car, the loudspeaker stopped working. That means no ringing, no sms sound, no loudspeaker when listening to the radio and probably worse of all, no alarm sound when I need to get up in the morning :/
At least I can upgrade in December. I'm quite excited about that...

    Improvements?

Lol. Whatsapp is great, though, I highly recommend, especially because it tells you the status of each message (i.e. sending... sent... received...).

Talking to BBM, what's the news on Android app support for Blackberry Playbook? or was that cancelled? I'm not entirely sure how that'd work, or how hardware compatibility would be handled (more specifically, hardware keys), but it could be a great asset to the Playbook and a step towards a unified mobile OS.

Nah ah. It's actually the legit BBM on Android that will allow you to communicate with BB devices using BBM. I've read about it and it's confirmed (that's what I meant about improvement). They chose Android because of it's open source structure (which is a good choice) but they hope to transfer the thing to iOS as well. I just thought someone might know of it. Eh, I'll hear about it at rAge then.

If BGR is a reliable source (as well as several other review sites) then it's really happening... :)

I know of the BBM moving to Android thing. I just think it's better to use something that is open from the start. Whatsapp is on Blackberry, iOS, Symbian and Android.

Whatsapp works great, and it's very cheap - I hardly use normal messaging now.

Got my Galaxy S2. Love it loads. I love how slim and light it is; it makes other smartphones seem outdated in that sense. The screen is amazing if you turn the brightness all the way up. I've already found a dozen everyday uses for it. I've noticed a couple of the apps my friend had to pay for on his BB are either free or come standard with my phone, but then on the flip-side downloading apps can get pricey for me. I just bought a 24 hour uncapped data bundle to get started and went wild. It was quite scary how quickly I hit the 150mb fair usage cap. So far the games aren't so great though - but I've only played the free ones so far. It would be nice if you could demo games before purchasing. One problem though, the Samsung music hub isn't supported in SA. Where else can I get music?

Something wrong with Opera Mobile, it doesn't save my edits. Oh well, just wanted to add that I think World of Goo would be perfect for this platform!

99% of my friends "went BB". They don't want to use Whatsapp and BBM, they're urging me to go BB. I don't want to, so I'm most probably going to go BBM for Android. I just hope it works decently, I don't care about videos and ****, I just want to be able to do the communication thing.

Oh yes, and Whatsapp isn't free. Not that I think BBM for Andriod will be free either, but yeah.

Why not just connect on wifi to get apps?

On Android it's free for the first year then R14 thereafter.

    *facepalm*

I can't believe that didn't occur to me until now. It's actually quite hilarious.

Blackberry marketshare is falling world wide at the moment. South Africa is just behind the curve. Get your Android and when the Blackberry fad is over you'd be happy you did.

    +1

RIM is in trouble in the other markets. Give it a year or two and here in SA most people would've left BB behind.

3 of my friends recently got to upgrade their phones, needless to say they all went Android.

So the days of BB are numbered, unless they can seriously shake up the market with an amazing phone or two. (Which is what they hoped the Torch would do but that failed).
