It also requires ip-table support on the kernel or via a module.

Opera Mini works just fine for me. Don't bother with Firefox, it's crap.

That's the second thing I recommended to him as well. First was WhatsApp.

If you care about your battery life DON'T update to Gingerbread just yet. I'm not enjoying this update very much :|.

I think I tried it out a month or two back. It took up a huge amount of space, think it was about 30MB, ran slowly, and pages took forever to load. The synchronization wasn't even well implemented. Might have improved since then, but Opera Mini's doing an excellent job for me, so I won't bother checking.

Since I installed the traffic monitor I'm averaging around 8mb a day. 5mb is going to Opera mobile, and about 3mb is going to "system traffic". I reckon I can bring that down a bit when I sort out my firewall. Im not sure what it was that chowed so much data, it was probably something that was updating or something. In any case the traffic monitor will help me weed out any problematic apps. On the weekend, when I was browsing a lot and checking out the occasional YouTube video I was averaging 15mb for the day.

Okay, so apparently there are no firewalls available for phones that haven't been rooted. I suspect the apps that are using the most "System Traffic" would be things like Accuweather; AP Mobile; and Yahoo Finance. I find it very frustrating that I am not using any of those widgets, yet I can see in my Traffic Monitor task manager they are running, and when I try kill them they just start up again. Anyway, here's hoping there will be an update that comes with a firewall, or one of the anti virus developers will make something.

8MB a day is a lot. That's R16 a day to just have the phone on, provided you don't have a data plan. It's a little annoying to be honest. I remember a friend of mine had the same problem with his X10 when it was first released, and the idiots at the Vodacom shop thing didn't know how to stop the thing from updating and connecting to everything the whole time. He eventually had to turn the phone off and stop using it until they figured out how to switch off the updates and stuff. In general I think I'll simply activate my router's wireless and use the WiFi for all connections, but unfortunately I'm not at home all the time to use it.

MTN is R1 per MB out of bundle, or between 20-60 cents depending on which bundle you buy. And as far as I know MTN is a bit more expensive than others.

Current version is broken, battery life with it is an expected 8 to 12 hours.

Is that for the newer version of the app or for both?

Yes but as it is I am not getting that kind of battery life with froyo?
Is whatsapp and 2 hours of wifi to blame? Intensive file syncing wifi

Yes. That will kill a battery, specially if the signal strength isn't the best.
