Caught this last week, it's pretty interesting from a genetics standpoint, and I love that the family has been overjoyed at the event, considering it a miracle.
Rock on recessive genes.
inb4 wife was a slut.
KKK and AWB must be doing their nut.
I remember seeing the exact same thing on Ripley's, about 7 years ago with another British black couple. The father said the doctor took him aside before letting him look at the baby and told him that he was sorry about his wife's infidelity (That made me lol) to which the father laughed it off and commenting that his wife was faithful and happily accepting a rare genetics anomaly as the cause. Nice, though, that trust is still a part of our world, too often we don't see it anymore.
This is giving me such a huge sense of D?j? vu now that I read through this article.
o.O
Interestingly, I watched a documentary a few weeks ago about Sandra Laing, an apparently coloured girl who was born to very conservative white Afrikaaner parents during apartheid. Sadly, in her case, she was expelled from school, ended up running away and was ultimately shunned by her parents.
The Sandra Laing story was all over DSTV for a while, not so long ago, and there was a film here on it too.
I saw this on My Broadband last week, should be interesting to see how different the comments on NAG are. Most people don't ever think about the recessive genes that they carry until stuff like this happens.
Interesting... my boyfriend is mixed race (Jamaican and Irish) and he has some blond hairs on his arms, looks a little strange ;)
But that is very, very rare and fascinating :P
From a Genetics standpoint, I have a question (for those who will know the answer).
For this to happen, it must mean that somewhere along one of their family trees there was an inter-racial marriage, right ?
Cause they couldn't have just gotten the genes for white skin out of thin air. Or is there some way for that to happen ?
Not a marriage, but people of different races must have had the children. Also, as it's blond hair and blue eyes, which are the the 'lowest' eye and hair colour in order of dominance (if I remember correctly) I would say that both parents have at least one white ancestor.
Black people came first, in terms of humanity's lineage. The kind of mutations that led to racial differences, like white skin, still happen today. So, it could be a mutation, or it could be that there are dormant genes in that family's history, which isn't that odd considering we all, every last one of us, have recessive genes from most of the racial paths, since there was a very narrow genepool originally.
Doesn't the article mention that geneticists are puzzled because they don't have any white lineage? So, I'd assume it's most likely a mutation?
Miktar's theory might be the optimal explanation. The 'pale gene' could be the mutation that was mentioned....neither Ben nor wife Angela have ANY mixed-race family history. Pale genes skipping generations before cropping up again could have explained the baby’s appearance.
