Thread: How are you preparing for rAge 2010

Default How are you preparing for rAge 2010

    Hi all,

This thread is for the players going to the NAG LAN this year. I'm curious as to how you are preparing for rAge in terms of what upgrades are you doing or what new games are you buying to play there.

This is not a bragging thread but more of a "I'm doing this because of a lesson I learnt" thread for others.

Seeing as I've created this thread I'll go first:

This month (August) will be year 3 for me using the same motherboard/CPU/memory. So I'm going for a new setup to last me the next 3 years.

I've already ordered the parts and am going with Windows 7 64bit Ultimate. My plan is to build up the rig and load software and tweak it till 2010/09/03 and then leave it alone. I've done my self over too many times in the past where by I leave the installing of a new hard drive or display card till the last minute and then I have to do on the fly diagnostics at rAge to determine why my system is crawling along. So on the weekend of 2010/09/03 I'll have a pre-rAge LAN weekend with friends to stress test the new system and make sure that the games I am planning on playing will rock at rAge.

Games wise... I've got all the games I want for now (read Starcraft 2).

BTW for that hard drive problem... I found out that between a jumper on the drive in the wrong setting and the motherboard I was using having a setting that put the SATA port into SATA1 mode instead of SATA2. Yeah I know; simple but not at 02:00 in the morning.

    Hey

My situation is similar to Clan_Dice. I bought my current rig for/on Rage 2008, I believe its time for upgrade. But I?m getting mixed feedback on what graphics card to buy. As soon as I decide either to buy 480GTX or 5970 or wait for 580GTX, I will buy my new rig.

Oh and also using every opportunity I can get to say to my friends "Told you so" because they said I was over reacting when I told them to buy tickets the minute they were available on computicket.

As for the week before rage ( im going to get crucifide for this ) im making my honeymoon shorter so that i can put in leave at work to be there friday morning. Havnt missed friday a friday morning cue since 2003!

Cant wait to see you all at rage!

    AMEN brotha dra90n3ddy!!!

I'm holding off on the display card issue as well for now. I'll re-use the GTX295 till the GTX475's (GF104) come out.

Recently switched to Windows 7 and have been having network issues, where when my bro tries to access a shared folder over the network, it freezes his network explorer-window. >_> Hoping to get this fixed by rAge time. Any and all advice is welcome. ;)

As for gaming, got my War3 installed, and ready for DotA. :P

Also, finally got my G15 keyboard (with the light-up keys) so I'll be sitting upstairs this year without a fuss (cause the teamies have out-voted me on this). >_<

Ladies and Gentlemen it is The 3RD OF AUGUST and 2080 gamers have already reserved their spots. Those of us who got their tickets, we are lucky.

My friend, derangeD_Cage, says he'll be changing/upgrading his motherboard/CPU/memory. His budget this year will be: R6000 and he'll keep his 2x260 (in SLI).

gonna go pick up my third gtx 480 tomorrow going to try the 3 way sli thing. Oh and I need a new screen.
Going to put some big wheels on my case this year, 42 kg's isn’t pleasant to carry not even on your back. BTW does anyone know where I can get a 1000 watt psu at a good price?

Me, I've just literally added a 1.5 tb drive, (old 250gb decided to go to the big hardware store in the sky, but luckily I had all my games, etc on my other drive and have begun the big move, then install windows) . Might get a new video card soon.

P.s. If you want to know how this is possible that I am posting here on the machine without an OS I am using a Linux LIVE OS (KNOPPIX to be precise so no need to install first).

For spending money at rAge I've got this deal with my friends; I volunteer to go buy the tickets for myself and them. As soon as I see them I give them their ticket(s) however they only pay me on the first day of rAge (the price for what I paid for the ticket and not a cent more). That way I do not have to draw any money from the ATM while there, I've kinda got my spending money for the weekend sorted out. Those rAge tickets for my buddies are like a 60 day savings account for me
    ;-)

I've just bought a 500gb HDD and a bigger PSU (My old one broke). And I'm going to try and find bubble wrap so that I can carry my screen in a backpack

Sheesh! What are you guys planning to play? Crysis 6? ;P Will take the same system I have used last year. My case is a bit big and not practical for lans, or shall I say a bit heavy (Thermaltake Armor MX). I'll just drag it along again. I have made, or shall I say, my wife has made me (isn't she a doll) a proper cover for my screen as well as for my case. I've just fashioned a carrying harness by using "tie downs" - you know those strong nylon straps. It works perfectly. So I'm basically set. Just need to get one more hard drive and install and update some more games and I'm good to go..
