Wreckless taxi hits train. Nine children dead

Eight children died on Wednesday morning when the taxi they were travelling in was hit by a train at a level crossing in Blackheath.

A ninth child was airlifted to the Red Cross Children's Hospital and another four were taken to Tygerberg Hospital.

The worst part is that the taxi had overtaken several stopped cars waiting at the boom, and then proceeded to race across the train tracks while the booms were down.

They died as a direct consequence of the aforementioned action. If the idiot had obeyed the rules, no one would be hurt. Two sides of the same coin.

It's not uncommon in this country for Taxis full of children to have accidents, killing most of the kids on board.

Don't mean to sound insensitive, but when reading the article I thought to myself "Again? *shrug*", as this thing happens far too often with Taxis to be considered a "tradgedy".

Edit: To clairfy, it's not often that Taxis get hit by trains, but often that Taxis crash, killing the people/children on board.

*sigh* Tragic. But not unexpected.

I recall about 2 months ago there was a huge traffic backup on the only open highway here in durban because the other highways were closed when a truck overturned. While waiting in an hour long queue to get to the on ramp for the open highway, at least 6 taxis overtook us by simply driving up the road of the oncoming traffic. The fact that no one was hurt was pure blind luck.

This is terrible, but sadly South Africa doesn't properly control the taxi industry. The whole model for taxi businesses cause problems like this.

The accident actually happened about 5km from where i live and work, needless to say it was a bit of chaos that day. Makes me think back on the Top Gear episode where Clarkson does that safety film where the train hits the car.
