Business Day reported yesterday that the North Gauteng High Court ruled last week that it is now illegal to gamble using digital products inside South Africa.
According to the report, as well as scans of the ruling attached to it, the judgment was handed down by Judge NB Tuchten.
The article said that the effect of the decision is that not only operators of online gambling sites are in violation of the law, but gamblers themselves are as well.
ISPs and financial institutions involved in online gambling are also to be held liable, as well as those that advertise online gambling websites, Business Day reported.
The article went on to say that those found guilty of violating the gambling legislation would face a R10 million fine, ten years in jail, or both the fine and the jail time.
