Thread: Half-Life movie would have to be made by Valve

Default Half-Life movie would have to be made by Valve

The only way a Half-Life film could ever exist is if Valve made it itself. But that's not all that unlikely.

Valve boss Gabe Newell told PC Gamer that a Hollywood has been sniffing around the possibility of a Half-Life film before but the stories that were pitched were "the worst".

"As a WoW player, I would much rather that the WoW team made the movie, right? Than anybody else," he explained.

"I like Sam Raimi, I've been a fan ever since Evil Dead came out, but I would rather see Blizzard making the movie. We think that customers are like, 'OK, we're kind of sick and tired of the way you guys are slicing and dicing the experience of being a fan of Harry Potter, or Half-Life, or The Incredibles, and you need to fix it.'"

"Where we got into this direction was after Half-Life 1 had shipped. There was a whole bunch of meetings with people from Hollywood," he added.

"Directors down there wanted to make a Half-Life movie and stuff, so they'd bring in a writer or some talent agency would bring in writers, and they would pitch us on their story."

"And their stories were just so bad. I mean, brutally, the worst. Not understanding what made the game a good game, or what made the property an interesting thing for people to be a fan of."

"That's when we started saying 'Wow, the best thing we could ever do is to just not do this as a movie, or we'd have to make it ourselves.' And I was like, 'Make it ourselves? Well that's impossible.' But the Team Fortress 2 thing, the Meet The Team shorts, is us trying to explore that."

So there you have it folks, Valve are on the case and already looking into whether it's possible for the studio to venture into a feature length Half-Life film.

Prior to E3 everyone was hoping that Valve's much anticipated surprise would be Half-Life 3. It wasn't.

Would a Half-Life film make up for the absence of Half-Life 3? Yes, yes it would.

Most movie -> game or game -> movie cross overs are usualy.. very BAD.
Plus how do you do a movie with a man that never speaks a word.

No i believe that MR freeman should stay behind a controller. how else can i get head crab?

Pretty much this. HL's magic lay in the fact that you (as Freeman) experienced everything that happened first-hand. It should stay that way.

But I do enjoy and would support other HL movie stuff like Escape From City 17 and Beyond Black Mesa.

    Beyond black Mesa looks crap.

I thought so too! I feel that the Half-Life 2 experience should stay on PC/Console. Hollywood, please leave this alone.

I think Valve should rather focus on HL3/EP3 :)

^Agreed, but if they are going to attempt a movie, I'd prefer something like Team Fortress 2 as the shorts are very well done.

If they make a movie I doubt Mr. Freeman will even play a role. Valve knows better than anyone that he is the strong, silent, FPS-protagonist type. A movie in the half-life world doesn't even have to feature him in it, short of perhaps a cameo appearance if his path crosses the movie characters' paths... probably him saving their asses with a super gravity gun, no voice, just awesome.

I think it very possible for a company like Valve to make a animated movie they do have the right infrastructure (Animators, Voice recording, etc. ). They have years experience in animation and don’t seem to have a problem when it comes creating a good story or characters. If there Team fortress 2 shorts are anything to go by they show great potential. Same goes for blizzard.

Half-life does seem to be workable title for a movie but Team fortress and Portals may just work.

I disagree. For a fan-made movie it doesn't look half bad.

It doesn't, but but when last did you really, truly enjoy a piece of Fan-Fiction?
